Korea’s TVREPORT, recently conducted a survey asking 223 University of Virginia students which idols they thought had the best vocals. Out of the female idols listed, Taeyeon came in at 2nd with 18.69% of the votes behind soloist IU, with a whopping 66.16% to claim 1st place.
Although the sample group for the survey was limited, and some of us are probably disappointed that our Kid Leader did not come first; there is no denying that IU does indeed have AMAZING vocals, and I’m sure many would agree, including Taeyeon herself:
Rounding out the Top 5 were: Wonder Girl’s Sunye with 8.59%, f(x)’s Luna with 5.05%, and Secret’s Jieun with 4.55% of the votes.

iu may be able to hit higher notes than taengoo, but our kid leader definitely has better tone… warm and rich… aahhhh… taeyoen ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I agree that IU have high note than Taeyeon. But I think Taeyeon have tone and voice much better than IU. It not cause I fans SNSD either Taeyeon. But I fall in love Taeyeon voice when I first time heard she sing solo live at radio. IU voice ok but I just see her more about her high note…

Even though Taeyeon is my #1 bias, I still like IU a lot but I don’t think she’s exactly there on Taeyeon’s level yet. IU’s very gifted, especially for her age, and her “3 high notes” are superb, but hitting high notes shouldn’t classify how well a singer SINGS. Even IU said this herself and it’s ironic that her famed “3 notes” carried her to superstardom alone (arguably but it holds truth) and she’s still riding a high wave of success so I’m kind of not surprised she won first for this survey. IU is a bit breathy and somewhat unstable for me. Plus her techniques worry me because she’s suffered from vocal nodules before… Her tone is awesome and without a doubt she’s a great singer though. On the other hand our Kid Leader has outstanding control of her voice, low to high, head voice or full voice, –her high notes (any notes) never lose timbre or clarity. She’s very clean and connected and her belting is powerful so I’m not quite sure why you guys are claiming that IU can hit higher notes than her without proper evidence lol…?
But in any case congrats to adorable IU and our byunTaeng! 🙂
IU has perfect pitch, now that’s the rare musical gift. Her pitch and dynamics are always stable and controlled. And somehow she’s the one that makes me cry. Not trying to bash Taeyeon. Just my opinion 🙂
IU does not have perfect pitch. Her character from Dream High has perfect pitch, but IU herself does not.

aah ~~ totally agree with Tomizzle.
being able to hit high notes doesn’t mean a good singer. taeyeon has been trained for many years and she clearly has better techniques. her voice is stable, emotional and soothing.
heck, IU is gifted, but she needs time training to be considered the same level as taeyeon.
Even though TaeYeon didnt get 1st place in this vote, but in my heart she will always remains as number one forever, and always. ❤

I freaking love IU and I think she’s super duper talented. She’s probably more talented than 75% of other female idols. BUT. There’s no way she’s more talented vocally than our kid leader. It’s understandable, she’s still young! She can be a slight bit sharp in certain notes (like in Good Day when she says “oppa ga”) but she’s usually pretty great and smooth. Taeng in the other hand, she can control her voice like no other. She can hit the high notes (Hush Hush and Complete) as well as the deeper one (Different and Byul).
I forgot to say that her falsetto is probably the best ever! Like she did in Reflection (w/ Fany!).

I think IU does have a ‘sharper tone’. Both are good vocals.
IU and Taeyeon’s vocals are both AWESOME 😀 , but, like the rest, I prefer the vocal control that Taeyeon has compared to IU’s ;). Nevertheless, Congrats’ to our 2 Super Ladies 😀 😀 <3333333333333 !!!
I like Taeyeon’s more . Her voice sounds better . IU has more of a scratchy voice , while Taeyeon has a smoother voice ,

Between the both of ’em, you can’t really judge based on how well they fare against each other, since both have their distinctive voices that defines them. nonetheless, don’t be too sad that Taeyeon came in 2nd, all of us acknowledge her great singing prowess and are quite afraid to put anyone who is just as good as Taeyeon above her (IU) since we’re biased about this sort of thing, we want the best and only the best for snsd, etc. But with ‘competition’ like this, take it as an opportunity for some ‘humility’, I guess? anyways, take the opportunity to learn from each other, we can’t always expect the best of someone to maintain that position all the time, there will always be someone to disprove us wrong, we learn from this kinds of senarios, and it goes a long way in helping us appreciate both singers. As for the fame and all, i really dont know, lol.

What’s UVA? Is it anything about vocal training? My mom’s a western opera singer, and I grew up with nothing but professional vocal singers. I’m pretty sure I could tell who has vocal gifts and training or not. In my opinion, not like it matters much because everyone that goes for idols think their own are the best, but in my opinion (as objective as I can), the ranking of voice talent and training is as follows:
#1. Bae Dahae (Vanilla Lucy)
#2. TaeYeon (SNSD)
#3. Sunmi (x-WonderGirl)
#4. Luna (f(x))
#5. Kim Sung Hee (x-Kara)
IU can sing 3 octave? So can I, if you don’t count both of ours falsetto and the extra breathing leaks that comes with it. I think this whole survey was a marketing tool for someone oh, say, IU? Personally I will say she has not much talent. Don’t believe me? Have them all sing without the mic on stage, and you’ll know what I mean.

@JamesLinJr: i think IU has alot of talent. Her voice isnt nearly as strong/powerful as Taeyeon, but the fact that her range is higher, and she can match Taeyeon in vocals…she’s pretty good. And yea, if you put any of the best singers on stage without a mic, they’re obviously gonna suffer in strength and volume. But when they sing on radio shows, that’s probably the clearest indicator your gonna get of their vocal abilities. That mic they use is just so they can be heard in general, it doesnt inhance their sound, it just transmits it, u know, the same as if they were just talking. So IU sound pretty great. So does Taeyeon obviously. We’ve all heard her sing.
but if they had a battle between the two, Taeyeon and IU. Taeyeon would definitely overpower IU’s voice. end of story.
I’m really surprised this was taken at the University of Virginia. I guess it would be least biased since most student wont know who Tae or IU are.
