A couple of hours ago, the ‘SM TOWN 2011 LIVE IN TOKYO’ concert, the first one that is, kicked off. If you recall from an earlier post, there are suppose to be two concerts, one on the 25th and another one on the 26th.
With thousands of fans competing for the tickets to attend, I’m pretty sure the concert today was a success. Don’t you think?
The seats in the National Yoyogi Gymnasium were literally packed.
Perhaps it could be the success or the fact that lots of fans weren’t able to get their tickets for the January 25th and 26th concerts, but according to Yurui912@Twitter,

When I looked through my opera glasses Yuri was roaring with laughter, Taeyeon looked blankly in front of her and Yoona and Sooyoung were talking to each other as close friends.

There was no self-introduction but the girls passed through the audience on stage.
Everybody was really cute. On top of them singing and dancing perfectly their style was also good. Their personality was awesome and I came to like them even more.

1. During “Kissing You”, Tiffany talked in Japanese asking, “Do you guys know this song?” which got the audience to go wild.
2.During the last greetings she threw confetti that was in front of her to the audienceAnd also she had a smile of angel.

I was surprised by how skinny soshi is especially Sooyoung. Their legs are long. The Japanese version of RDR is really cool.In the entire concert hall the rate of DBSK fans was high (I’m also one of them) , so in my surroundings there were almost no encouraging shouts/chants for soshi. I’m a Yuri fan and during the last song there was a group of guys near me that were screaming, one of them screamed ‘Yuri’ while waving his Yuri fan. She laughed and pointed at him and she even waved at him. I noticed there were a lot of male fans at SMTown.
I didn’t cool down yet from yesterday’s excitement. My seat was close to the passage on stage, so I could see snsd up close. My thoughts were that Yoona and Sooyoung were really skinny. When my favorite Tiffany turned towards me I was moved and almost cried. Personally my favorite was the collaboration between Krystal and Jessica. Jessica sang Tik Tok while wearing pink fluffy fur clothes and had curly hair.

While Shinee was singing Sooyoung was looking at them from the side of the stage. She was making small gestures and imitating them. She was doing it with such a serious expression which was very cute. The whole time Yoona was behind Sooyoung hugging her.I was in the south wing. Tiffany, Sunny, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon came to where I was. Everybody was so cute and I teared up. Tiffany’s smile is super cute. Hyoyeon did a saranghae/heart pose. Taeyeon pointed at the people in front of her with a smile.

– Tiffany, Hyoyeon and Taeyeon came to my side. The person who stayed very long was Tiffany. With her extremely cute smile she waved at the audience. When she left she even blew a kiss. I as a Fany fan was so happy that I almost started to cry. Hyoyeon was even thinner and cuter than on tv. Taeyeon was as white as a fairy and a beauty. As I expected it’s even more fantastic to see Snsd live. I noticed there were only few chants during snsd’s performance, but it’s better not to try to notice it and shout for them. It’s not that people near me weren’t interested, they just didn’t know the chants.– On the first day, at the end of Seohyun and Kyuhyun’s duet they held hands and gazed at each other, but Seohyun couldn’t bare it and bursted into laughter.
On the second day she improved. The two of them held hands and faced the front (with their backs to the screen) Afterwards both of them kept on bowing. It was so cute.On the first day Sooyoung didn’t come to the north side but at the end when they all lined up Sooyoung waved to both sides of the arena, when I caught her attention with my fan she saw the people on the first floor. She even did a peace sign. On the second day when they came out for Way to go Sooyoung had her hair tied and had a ponytail with extensions. Moreover at the end she came to the south wing and I got to see her again. For the 2 days I sat on opposite sides but for both days Sooyoung came to both sides at the end which made me happy.
– I went on both days. On the second day there were so many DBSK fans near me so it was as if I was the only one chanting in my block and there were no soshi fans near me. On the second day Yuri was standing right in front of me. When I showed my fan she pointed at me cutely. She was so cute that my knees got weak. It would be good that next time at a soshi solo concert we could chant with a sense of unity with all soshi fans.

This concert is a failure.. because they didn’t maximize the profit by having more concerts and let most of the fans suffer from not able to get tickets!!! >.<

I completely disagree, it is not a failure, it is a giant success considering they sold out TWO SMTown concerts, they didn’t even do back-to-back like this in Seoul! Some times it’s not about maximizing profit, it’s about the impression you leave, if they wanted to make money they would just schedule 10 concerts in a roll, but that would tired the artists out and people will start tuning them out. They were very successful because they left Japan with a hugely positive impression of the SMTown artists and they left their fans with a feeling of exclusivity, like they’re part of something special, if you sell more concerts that feeling will no longer be there and you just make yourself look cheap. Simple economics, you want the demand to be higher than the supply so you’re in control of the market, you always want to leave something to be desired so you know you’re always gonna sell out whenever you sell a concert. Just look at the Superbowl as an example, since it’s Superbowl time, by your logic they should just play more Superbowl games, but that just won’t work.
You can’t compare this to superbowl.. Not sure where you’re from, but from an American economic stand-point, you do want more concerts in this case, not to mention the publicity and continuity. It is about maximizing profit, and when I meant maximizing, I’m also including within the artists capabilities, otherwise, it would not be maximizing due to fatigue. If you took economics, you’d know what I mean. They were successful in terms of branding their names in a foreign market, but you have to capitalize on that because the idol music industry is short lived, even for a successful group like SNSD. Therefore when the wave hits, you ride it, and ride it as much as you can without overworking yourselves. Simple economics isn’t just limiting the supplies because you haven’t even gotten close to the supplying limits. Superbowl is different because it is a completely different entertainment outlet with a completely different schedule. I’d like a good argument, but I’m afraid your argument is invalid. However, the ‘success’ definition can always be argued because the definition of it varies from person to person. I’d like to see SNSD succeed as in dominating the Japanese music market for years to come along with making the most out of it, and not end up like KARA…
Well I’d like a good argument too but I’m afraid your logic is just flawed. Please read what you said previously: “(SMTown) is a failure…because they didn’t maximize the profit by having more concerts and let most of the fans suffer from not able to get tickets!” I understand SMTown and Superbowl are two completely different animals but the basic principle is the same: you have a highly demanded event that more people want to see than seats are available. By your flawed logic the Superbowl will be a failure too because 1)they didn’t maximize profit, 2)they let most fans suffer for not being able to get tickets. They know they will sell out the 100,000 or so tickets to that event, and they know there are probably millions more who’d like to see it, so why don’t they make it a 7-game series and play multiple Superbowl games when they know with 100% certainty that they’ll sell out all of them? For the simple reason that It just doesn’t make sense to cheapen the feel of your event and make it overly accessible, and you definitely don’t want to kill your athletes/artists by doing it.
I’d like to think I know a thing or two about economics, I was an economics major in fact. I’m going to go ahead and make the argument that they DID maximize profit under the circumstances. In a perfect world, if they had no constraints, if their artists have unlimited stamina with blank schedules, if they have unlimited and free rent to the Yoyogi National Stadium, with unlimited human resources and staff, and zero logistics and production hurdles, then yes, your argument would be valid that they should just keep doing more concerts until all 400,000 applicants are satisfied. But the reality is, all those constraints exist and it is simply unrealistic from an economic perspective, rent is not free, artists have busy schedules and already exhausted as they are, and it cost a lot of monetary and human resources to produce a concert. Not to mention outside forces like contracts with concert promoters, record labels and local businesses, as well as the lead time it takes to schedule and prepare these events in advance. The bottom line is, even if they wanted to do more concerts, they probably couldn’t because of these reasons. If you had taken just a minute to consider all of these factors, you will quickly realize SM did extremely well with what they had and not make some rash and unreasonable statement like “SMTown is a failure”.
I don’t want any bad blood with any SONEs, we’re one family and we’re together because of SNSD. In due time they will dominate the Japanese market, but doing more SMTowns or ITNW concerts is not the only avenue to success, they have to succeed as a group from a musical standpoint first, then the concerts and live appearances will be the bonuses that come after. KARA is a classic case of overworked idols under bad management with poor economic sense. If SM does what you say and just keep riding their artists without regard, then cases like TVXQ and KARA will just keep occurring, but we know SM Entertainment have learned their lesson by now and they know what they’re doing. You just have to have some faith instead of slapping a “failure” label on them.
i think SM’s doing a good job of slowing down SNSD’s japanese promotions. i hate how the antis/haters/trolls or whatever you wanna call them are always criticizing SM’s strategy of asking to make new songs. making a new song and making a name for SNSD in a foreign country isn’t as easy as 1,2,3. especially in a tough market like japan: there’s a lot things at play. SM doesn’t want to maximize SNSD’s promotions in japan because they already have enough on their hands as it is right now back in korea. plus, if they aggressively promote the girls and maximize their effect in japan…don’t you think the japanese fans and people will get sick of them? SM doesn’t want that to happen, instead they are slowly getting the japanese public to get used to SNSD’s style. don’t even mention kara in this article because we all know how they end up the way they are now…the thing about SNSD is, is that their success doesn’t come easy, they always have to work their way up from the bottom, just like what they’re doing in japan right now. there’s always a downside to becoming popular at the fastest possible…because then you’ll end up fading away at the fastest possible as well. better to take one step at a time but keep fans interested with remake his for now…

on the contrary…how is this concert a failure? there’s a reason why they had to do an application in order for the concert goers to be able to buy a ticket, and surprisingly, it garnered 400K+ applications just so they can get a chance to purchase one. and that’s cause yoyogi stadium can only hold 13,291 people in its capacity, so imagine the 400K+ people who wanted to come, they won’t be able to because of the size of the stadium (which happened to be sold out). 13,291 times 2 equals to 26,582 people are allowed to attend for both concerts, which means 373,418 people are the ones who will be missing out since they won’t be given a chance to purchase a ticket. and you compare this to the Super Bowl? are you nuts…Super Bowl stadiums can hold 75K+ capacity.

As concise as I can possibly make it to those who don’t understand, let SNSD pace themselves first before advancing towards conquering the entire world with their music. That way, SNSD will inevitably be able to have their music shown to everyone and have the energy to do what they want at the same time in due time; A “Win-Win” situation for the SONEs’ and them.
Sure, there may be a few (conciliation?) issues with SME. But since they’re the head-honcho in promoting their groups and making sure they get a stellar reception for aforementioned groups, whether financially or as an good impression for others, it’s best left to their buisness acumen and shrewdness since SME has the required knowledge in dealing so with these kind of matters.
Just have a little faith and go with the flow, as I like to say.

Yeah, they should do that, shouldn’t they 😉 ? That’s my one wish too and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that “Running Into The Sun”, the organizers for last year’s K-Pop Night, seriously considers organizing such an event (or better still, get SME to let the “angelic 9” do a ITNW event 😀 !) here this year !!! We can always dream, can’t we 😉 ?!!!
I feel as though concerts are slowly losing their worth with the frequency rate being much higher than before. People used to rely on music videos on the internet as a form of sustenance for their fervency towards a particular group. But let’s face it, there will always be competition in this world of ours when it comes to getting whatever we desire (This concert), inevitably leaving out those who don’t have the wherewithals or perhaps arrived late at the moment where the opportunity is gone. I.E: All of the reserved tickets are sold out.
I’m willing enough to give up a $300 ticket to a once-in-a-lifetime event like this because I know that if I can make someone else happy, you get a sense of elation resonating from in within you knowing that you did something worthwhile to leave an impact on your life.
The SMTown Live 2011 in Tokyo will incontrovertibly leave a vivid impression to those who are able to attend, thus making them feel part of something special since… I guess concerts like this are in a case, “Rare”, before going back to reminisce about what had happened earlier on in the day/night while relaxing to a song from SNSD or talking it over with a couple of friends/relatives.
How the “revenue gained” or “demand of whatever” plays a part in this is not my forte. What I do hope is that, at the very least, everyone gets a slice of the cake, no matter what form it’s in.
When it comes to significance, I can’t really vicariously understand it. I know I should be including some more valid details and points like how those able to attend earn the jealous ire of those who could not and had to resort to fan-cameras on any form of media, etc blah blah blah.
But I’ll leave it at that.
i guess it’s the fact that it was a once in a lifetime thing… that exact concert with those exact artists and fans will never come together like that ever again. that’s why people come to concerts, or what the ball drop on new years, or walk up a mt. . . . it happens all the time, but it’s never exactly the same. Being present, and watching from outside is totally different… the emotions, anticipation, the cheer and hour (or hours) of pure joy or fascination… it’s priceless and some don’t do it again. =)
I guess you could say that. I may be contented with what I have, but if some aren’t and love doing what they love to do, which is go to a “Once-in-a-lifetime” concert and all that good stuff, then by all means, go ahead.

i’m surprise that a country like japan with all its technology and resources are lacking in the fancam departments…wonder why? there hasn’t been any new lucrative fancams that we usually get even during the actual concerts to update us with what happened…was this year’s SMTown banned the taking of fancams? i hope not…
I think they did or else we would have seen them by now. That’s too bad. I’m glad they didn’t do that for the LA concert and there was no problem with getting tickets too. Sometimes I think alot of foreign fans get screwed. Its unfortunate.
SUCKS, yo :(! anyways…saw the news clip of the girls doing RDR, and i must say…it looks fierce. the girls look so BEATIFUL (but that’s already given, lol), its interesting that they showed the ending clip and they focus on Yuri, Sooyoung, Seohyun’s parts…cause they all look charismatic 🙂 in their solos. Can’t wait to see them perform on Music Station this friday…

just heard some disappointing news :(…since japan has strict laws regarding fancams…i’m afraid we’ll have trouble finding lucrative fancams for our viewing pleasures since its strictly banned.
I wonder why that is? Its pretty interesting that the US have more lax rules regarding fancams.
supposedly, SM has a new rule now…no fancams, plus japan has strict rules too! but hopefully, some clever netizens are able to get some of the girls’ performance.

yes…isn’t that amazing :)! Shusuke Kaneko is a HUGE fan of the girls…he was spotted during their Ariake showcase as well as the Odaiba concert a few months ago. I’m guessing he went to SMTown concert as well to be able to tweet about the girls, since they haven’t been promoting in japan for a while now. Can’t wait to see them perform RDR on music station, as you can see from the news clips, the performance looks fierce!

i knew he went to the girls showcase didn’t know he went to the Odaiba performance… i all so can’t wait to see RDR @ Music Station and DBSK too i heard that Tiffany had the staff laughing from tweet that music station sent so am anticipating it a lot and the fact that RDR is just awesome in Japanese or Korean.RDR is No.1 on the daily download! no doubt the effect of SNSD never seize to amaze me.

Turns out there’s not much to what’s left of the fan-cameras’ about “SMTown Live 2011 in Tokyo” on Youtube that’s already shown on here. Some of them are reuploaded versions of the original videos’.
Which begs the question, is that all to what’s shown of SNSD at the concert? Because the rest are of the other groups in SME. Plus a few newsreels here and there.

Yeah, I guess they did okay with their Japanese promotion tour. I’m just tired of seeing other non-korean artists entering Japanese or any other countries actually, to get ahead so easily. I mean Lady Gaga probably didn’t even tour Japan and other Asian countries and already well known and topping the charts. By the time SNSD will be worldly well known, they are probably getting ready to move on and disband and do their own thing already. I always like to aim high, and sometimes maybe too high, but nevertheless, high. I think they can definitely do better job than this. Stop creating new music/commercials and just go on a world tour for a whole year. American singing bands do it, why can’t they also? I’m just saying because look at KARA, they’re gone already and they JUST started invading Japan…
btw: kara is remaining as 5 and will fulfill their scheduled activities, but no final compromise as of yet…and as for the members, well, no matter what the outcome is, i think the damage is done.

Personally, I think that western music pales in comparison to Korean music. I listen to nothing but Korean music now, even though I cant understand hardly a word. SNSD turned my musical world around and I thank them heartily for it! I would LOVE to see them conquer the world and show the western artists what it REALLY means to work hard and earn the respect of their fans.
also i notice…i know how much japan loves “Oh” but the fancam just proves it. and did i notice a lot of guys cheering for our girls? wow, seems like japanese male fans are trying to outnumber SNSD’s japanese female fans, lol! 50-50 ratio is good enough, as long as you all whole heartedly adore our SoShis :)…and also, the girls have died their hair more brownish (specifically jessica) and i notice during award shows, the girls are going more edgy. are they going for a more punk-rock look for their possible japanese album or korean comeback?

You know how there are intellectual (Okay, that sounds self-conceited) people out there in the world who aren’t aware of what happens in the K-Pop music industry?
I just happen to be one of those people (Still self-conceited, but hey). However, I have knowledge of SNSD’s impressive repertoire and shenanigans through this site and SSF now, so it helps it be something of a messenger or “tour guide” for people who are being introduced to K-Pop, without all of the biases and stuff in between.
