Well not exactly cities for snsd..more like countries!
The girls started off in Seoul and rocked South Korea with their amazing Soshi Power. They then rocked Japan, China, Taiwan, and every other Asian country. Their next target? It’s not a country..it’s a continent.
That’s right. Europe.
Recently on Billboard.com, an article was released talking about the sucess of SNSD in Japan. The article opened up by stating “The Japanese music market may be increasingly resistant to international repertoire, but that isn’t stopping Girls’ Generation. The Korean girl group is hoping to turn huge YouTube buzz into sales in Japan and other international markets”, and moving on to talk about the girls huge success in the foreign market. From taking over charts to appearing on a load of Japanese tv shows, this article is a summary of the Power of 9. 😀
What captivated readers attention the most was the final paragraph, stating that SNSD may target Europe in 2011. How reliable is this..well no one knows so SONEs are just going to have to wait and see.
You can check out the original article here!

So what do you guys think about SNSD entering the European market? Of course it’ll be difficult but how do you feel? Any thoughts?

even though it was billboard themselves who said it… i kinda see this rumor as HIGHLY DOUBTFUL. it just doesn’t seem to make much sense to me. wouldn’t america be every asian company’s next move?? SM tried it with boa, but maybe they’d feel more comfortable with SNSD. eh who knows…. but if this means i’m going to have buy yet ANOTHER EDITION of the SAME album… T_____T

hmm…EU? hmm… Sment should try to look at their video statistics of SNSD’s mv because there aren’t much people from EU watching their mvs. In America though, there’s quite a lot. But in EU, a few only. Tsk. But I’ll support them even wherever they may go. ❤ SNSD is LOVE!

I’m 100% sure they will find an audience outside the one’s that already know about them if they come here. Europeans are very used to liking artists that are not from their own country, and sometimes who are not even singing in English or their own language, and girl groups have worked very well here before (just look at Spice Girls’ incredible success during the 90’s. They were big in the US but even bigger here! hehe). In big shows like the Eurovision Song Contest, people have to vote for other countries than their own for instance. In addition pop has always been more popular here than rock’n’roll too. And btw, there’s a LOT more Sones here than people think!! AND the euro is a lot stronger than the won, which means that SM are gonna earn enormous amounts of money (in wons) if they succeed here. Both Italian, German and even Polish news have already reported about their success in Asia and called them “the new Asian Spice Girls”… I could go on! lol
If this is true, I think it would be would be the natural step by SM. First make Asia pink. Already done. Then Europe (perhaps during 2011). Then North-America! And who knows, then maybe a “real” World tour on every continent! Make the world pink 😀

Honestly, I think if it were really SM’s goal to bring SNSD to America, it would be a smart move to go throught Europe first. There are no such things as “idols” in America, so any group of “exotic” and sexy young women would be only seen as objects and sex symbols. In America, we don’t have variety shows that really show off our artists’ personalities (unless you count our retarded reality shows), that made us all fall in love with SNSD. Quite frankly, the girls’ wouldn’t stand a chance because the US ISN’T READY for them yet. However, it might be a different story if it were just our Cali girls. If they succeed in taking Europe, then the transition to the US would be an easy ride. Hit artists from EU would seem much more “safe and familiar” and less “scary and foreign” than if they were coming straight from Asia. That’s just my opinion, though. I’d still love to Sica come back home to me here in San Francisco :P. Whatever they decide to, I’ll still love and support them!

Europe isn’t just 1 country, when do you see really famous people from Ukraine and Poland? The only way they can get into American from Europe is UK in my opnion, probably because their both English.
Hannah said:
I swear there was one person who cane from Poland who made it big in Anerica but I can’t remember her name. sorry
YungC said:
Actually, there are a lot of famous Polish people in America but they are mostly in film rather than music. There are A LOT of famous singers/song writers who are of polish decent, though.
I do agree that it would be good for SNSD to make it in the UK before they reach America. It’s an easier market to get into and a very good stepping stone for the journey to the US.
JamesLinJr said:
What do you mean no such things as ‘idols’ in America? Tons.. as a matter of fact, started back in the 80s with boy bands and girl bands.. lots of idols, including the nowadays crap. No variety shows? That’s true. If US isn’t ready for SNSD, I doubt Europe will be. Transitioning into US from Europe is a BAD IDEA. Why? Because nobody would promote that from Europe to US, and only little chance if from UK. Look at Girls Aloud. They are huge in Europe, but couldn’t even break into US. At least Wonder Girls broke the US chart (even if they were the 100th).. I say straight promote into US.. yeah, I’d like them to come back to Cali too.. I’m from San Francisco and lives in Los Angeles now.. hope Sica goes back to the City and Fany goes back to LA and promote their craft as SNSD. 🙂

europe is definitely the safe bet because the american music industry is difficult to get into. yes, it may be an alright idea because it means they will venture to america, but i’m worried about these girls health. japanese promotions wore them out so hopefully sm goes easy on them. what also worries me is the girls being accepted. wondergirls have been promoting themselves for a while now but ppl still don’t know who they are. hopefully they become a success in europe.

I don’t know about this move. To be honest, so many kpop artists have failed their promotions in Western countries (not mentioning who…).
I think they should stick to where they are right now.
Expanding all the way around the world is good, but western countries have different values and might not like kpop.
I don’t know. I don’t want to see what happened to the WG. 😦

NOOO!!! i mean, i’m happy that the girls are popular enough to branch out to other continents…but europe?? that’s sooo much harder to conquer, than say…..AMERICA!!! They’ve already been in the US, why not come back and finish the crazy they started!?? 😦 i’ve already made all my trips to europe……and its so much easier to stalk them from the west coast–>asia, than all the way in Europe (too many countries to keep up with).
*sigh* anyways, im happy for the girls either way. it’d be really cool if this news is confirmed by SM in the future. can’t wait til they conquer the US (already have to me) and then the WORLD! muhahaha *evil laugh*
Minky said:
As much as I love them will they meet the connect with the audience? Europe and onwards is driven by “sex factor”, lots of skin etc, so unless they change their style I don’t they will be overly successful in Europe, I’ve never really seen Asian groups popular over here.
Goodluck to them.
Kathy said:
First of all: Yay!
People who are saying that SNSD doesn’t have a chance there; that’s not true. SNSD is populair for a Asian group. It’s also much easier to go to Europe, because Europeans are less harsh on artists from other countries.

Thanks for pointing this out. Perhaps, I should have been more specific. However, when I said “EU”, meaning the entire European Union, the UK is included. If our girls were headed to Europe, then I’m sure the route to America would be a lot smoother if they were to debut in the UK. I agree, it’s a shame that we do not see to many stars from Ukraine and Poland, or any other foreign country for that matter, here in the US. Let’s just pray for our girls’ success, and maybe one day they might be the first to truly break the barrier, conquer the US music industry and lead the way for artists around the world!

though I’m surprised that they have desicded ti go to Europe before the USA since everyone seems to do that but if they come to Europe first, I think they would be te first Asian girls group to do it 🙂

Realistically speaking, I think that Europeans are quite open to all kinds of music and don’t care much about language or accent. We’re used to listening to music (or watching movies) from all over the world. I think that because of this it would be easier for them to make it here than in the US. People would be curious about them – if they chose to promote songs like Genie or RDR, of course. I already noticed that some kids who aren’t even kpop fans know songs like Gee and Oh! but that level of cutesy wouldn’t do for the general audience, haha ;D

Agreed with mr. T, European fans are very used to liking foreign music, and SMent can find the right tune that’ll fit in no doubt.
Still I agree that this rumor is highly doubtful, even though Billboard had it in an article :3

I’m no music industry analyst, so I’ll give what I think might be the safest bet on how SNSD’s transition to Europe might be in the future.
Okay, it’s evident that there are SONEs’ in Europe, but the only problem is where to start from. My take on Europe is that with multiple countries demonymically having their own language(France has French, Germany has German, etc), some cultures in those countries tend to have their own distinct way of accepting foreign music, especially from Asia.
While writing this, I have read other comments on how Europeans like and easily accept foreign music, and this comment might contrast with others, but the audience which I’m referring to is the general audience who might have not heard of the ladies or might have but so no interest as a neutral who might like other types of music.
Realistically speaking, since European media have dubbed our ladies ‘The Asian Spice Girls’, it might help raise awareness among those neutrals and if SNSD is truly successful, they’ll help pioneer the Asian/Korean pop music wave for many other Korean artists to come who are expanding into Europe, I don’t know about the United States of America.
Nonetheless, let’s hope that SNSD becomes successful with Europe despite language and culture barriers though, but like what Renoo said, ‘SMent needs to find the right tune that’ll fit in no doubt’.
Terrez said:
Correction: but show* no interest as a neutral.

the thing is the girls & SM are planning in a very smart manner in my opinion, think about it, practically every artist from south korea & other asian countries have failed to completley break into america due to the fact that at that time they are very scarce to the rest of the world’s music industry! the fact that snsd have decided to take europe before making any advances towards the US is actually the smartest thing an asian artist has done, within europe is the UK, the UK is known for probably being at least the second largest music industry across the globe and also europe, unlike the US, is very into mainstream pop & dance music at the moment which means the girls have a very likely chance of succeeding within this continent…which will then give them a lot more power and status within the industry, paving an easier path into the US!

its a good plan…however, SM wouldn’t just go and have the girls leave korea and start promoting them in EU…i think they’ll start off with a showcase to test the waters. anyways, they already have big fanbases in Europe so that’s a good note. i remember N’sync and Backstreet boys started off in Europe and build a large fanbase before hitting their own country.

I think it’s a good think for them to come in Europe because like everybody knows there’s a lot of country. I explain my opinion : if they come to do just one concert in any country in Europe there are probably a lot of fans who will come, but if they do a lot of concerts (more than 10 for example), like there are not as many fans as in Korea, I don’t think there will be so much people… But if they do 2 or 3 concerts in each country in Europe, it will for sure be a success, and they will begin to “conquer the world” (and SM earn a lot of money -,-)
I hope so much they will come to Paris!!!!!
Omg if they come I would see Soo Young’s legs and beautiful face in reel *__*

Wow! Europe… which would mean a very distinct possibility of the UK!?? That would be both amazing and scary. Amazing because… well… So-Nyuh Shi-Dae IN THE UK!!! Scary because… the ‘west’ are notorious for trying to turn things into their own image. Here in the west, in my opinion, we have absolutely no girl groups that even come close to comparing to the Soshi girls, neither in sheer talent nor work ethic. Our culture is based on throway pop and easy fame via such drivel as ‘x factor’, semi talented people desperate for their fifteen minutes of fame because thats the easy route in life.
If SNSD decided to conquer the west, they would have to stay true to what they believe in, and not let the western pop culture sneak in and try to alter them.
Theyre preeeeeetty perfect just the way they are! Fighting!!
Mindbogglycows said:
I love how this article is able to bring out the variety of countries that Sones originate from.
Now if they can make our wishes come true then I’d be more than happy.
The thing is, outside of Korea (and japan) music shows… eh, that’s not really too common, so they wont be able to “promote”.
I’d much rather them just hold concerts… fan signings.. etc, cause there ARE fans around the world (as this article goes to show). Of course going on some talk shows or radio shows would help, but other than that, “promoting” is … how do i say it, not that plausible, cause of the lack of opportunities to “promote”.
Either way, wish to see them in Vancouver some time. ; )

Ha ha ha … we’re much the same
I’m a great fan of Kdrama, but I wasn’t fond of Kpop
Mostly because I’m getting sick with the cute-boys image of most Kpop’s boy-group.
But SNSD changes everything upside-down.
Back to the topic: Why don’t SNSD came down south first? INDONESIA!
The music biz is very good here, and most people have been drifted by Korean wave.
And the most important thing is: thousands of devoted SONEs here, and it’s growing larger.
SNSD please come to INDONESIA!

Objectively, Europe is a hard market to crack with their current style and music. As much as I love the girls, and honest to God I really love every single one of them, It will be very unlikely to have a sustained market presence there. The image and style they are in are that of teenage pop stars, given their age, they might be pushed to be more risqué and abandon the loveliness that makes them awesome.
Besides, for the love of all that is good, please please do not give them more work than what is humanly possible, sometimes when I see them appear in programs for promotions I feel sad because I can see how hard they are pushing themselves to attend with very little rest. I think the fainting incident with F(X)’s Krystal is just an example of how strained the talents are. I do’t want to be selfish to the European fans, but I think the girls really need more time to rest and recover from extensive training, public and corporate appearances in Korea and all over Asia.
Tell me what you think, peace out.
