Last month, rookie girl group CHI-CHI confidently announced, “Our goal is to be like SNSD” and stated their wish to “become Asia’s top girl group”. Despite their honesty, the girls’ statements were misunderstood as pretentious.
Recently in an interview with Star News, CHI-CHI clarified, “We respect our seniors, SNSD and that was why we mentioned that we hope to be like them. We also said that we want to be loved by everyone, regardless of sex and age, just like SNSD.”
The CHI-CHI members added, “SNSD are our role models and we would like to show our respect for them. They are a top idol group not only in Korea, but also in Asia. They are role models to us who are lacking in many areas. SNSD, who are not only the best in Korea but also in Asia, are our idols. We want to be like that too”.
A few years ago, SNSD expressed how much they looked up to veteran groups, but now it seems like our girls are returning the favor by serving as examples for new groups.
They over confident… Are they just coverline? Cause they get critic… If they make snsd as they idol…be like them, I mean they behave… Most senior like them cause they respect to they senior, easy going etc… Behave one of them…

I noticed it too! Here’s a bigger version:

It’s like Yul – Taeng – Yoong – Seo – Hyo – Sica – ???
Oh wow, the clothes are all so similar !!
woah exact copy! that girl even kinda looks like taengoo
wow…
i will be prefer if their just do anything else than used SNSD name…first want replace SNSD then make SNSD as their role model…at first place they were so rude to said to replace SNSD when SNSD is still exist..then as a role model…i think their better work hard n do their own music…is so ashamed to listen their song n then this…
I think you’re misunderstanding them. They said they want to be “be like SNSD” not replace them
yeah false interpretation..but ” Our goal is to overtake the nation’s best girl group, SNSD”…it seem rude to me…
It’s not rude. It’s actually a big compliment towards SNSD.
It’s not rude, if your in a girl group you would want to be the best girl group, no one goes in the entertainment business only being second best
i love my girls, i love SNSD and i’m a fan eversince. but you should accept the fact, that there will be a time when SNSD won’t be the nation’s girl group anymore. the industry is living, therefore changes will occur. nobody will be on the top forever. and it’s good that way. besides of that, the love for SNSD will not die down, once they will be seniors to so many. so it’s nice to see some fresh breezes in the industry. i like CHI CHI as well. their music style is kinda different and i’m sure they never intended on disrespecting SNSD. people need to stop willingly misunderstanding them. they just expressed their respect and admiration for SNSD.
snsd is so pretty
Yes yes I remember these girls. Outright claiming that they wanted to be on the same level as SNSD when they themselves had literally just debuted.
Needless to say the pretentious arrogance of such a statement instantly turned me off to them.
Even if they did clarify what they meant, first impressions have already been made. I really couldn’t care less about them anymore.
If they do manage to garner some degree of success, good for them, more power to em.
If they don’t, then hey, just another addition to the already long list of mediocre girl groups.
Haha
the original article had them saying that they wanna surpass SNSD not only in korea, but in asia, lol! now they come out with an article about using SNSD as their role models? sounds like these girls have been whoop by SONES around the world so now they wanna redeem themselves. i would have been fine with their first comment, they said that first so they have to stand by it and not try to cover it up with the “SNSD’s our role model” bullshit :(….
UHHH who are they? never heard of them.. are they korean or japanese.. when i google them, all i get is dbz pictures
they cannot be like SNSD because they are so proud of themselves and over confident…GOSH!First of all I don’t like them.they are very far from SNSD…
For some reason, WANTING the same level of success as SNSD is seen as “over confident” and “arrogant” which I don’t understand. As a rookie, they obviously want to aim high. They want to become successful. They look up to SNSD who has practically dominated Asia (dare I say the world? XD) and are now one of, if not, THE best girl group. They see them as their goal. So what’s wrong with that? Just like a kid who plays basket ball would wish to reach the level of Michael Jordan someday, they want to become as big as SNSD.
BTW, like loveme-hateme has pointed out, their clothings do match… a lot O.O they might be taking the “SNSD is our idol !” a bit too far =/
whoa~~people! just chill.
They look up to our girls. That’s a good thing.
Our girls didn’t have too great a start either when they debuted and had to face some tough challenges.
I remembered all the storms soshi had to weathered coz they were still green back then. (Not gonna go into details bout this)
Now, soshi is out to dominate the world.
It’s the same for Chi-Chi as well.
They’re young and eager and more than likely to make mistakes. So cut them some slack.
Personally as a SONE, i feel that we should be more understanding in regards to these situations.
These girls are precious to their fans as soshi is to SONEs.
Be a SONE that soshi can be proud of.
I agree with you, Niki…they’re just a rookie group that looks up to snsd. and we shouldn’t bash them too much for doing so because our girls were like that too some time ago. i hope they realize though that they gotta put in the countless hours of hard work, dedication. practice, patience, perseverance, and sweat that our girls put in.
When SNSD debuted, do you think they didn’t look up to people in the current business? Of course they did.
These girls are new, I didn’t know them before now either, but they look up to SNSD so it proves how successful SNSD have been. People bashing them before they even done anything, get a grip of yourselves and if you don’t understand the article don’t comment, goodluck to these girls in the future too.
I agree with Niki.
It might be for publicity, might be a slip of the tongue, they might be using Soshi. But give them a chance. They’re young and new to the industry. As a true SONE, I can’t deny Soshi didn’t make any slips of the tongue or mistakes.
Besides, people gave our nine girls a chance and look where we are now 🙂 There are people who have turned against them, and they still do, but Soshi enforced into me the idea of treating others with kindness no matter how they treat you (or your idols).
So, Chi-Chi, do your best 🙂 Make Soshi proud 🙂
They want to be like SNSD? I can see that, it’s like their cloning our girls. And it scares me sometimes.
I think these girls (or their management agency) simply lack tact, thus the big hoo-ha today. When they first debuted, they publicly expressed that their “goal is to overtake SNSD”. This statement can be viewed in many different perspective however, but many people have taken the negative stand that they are being overly ambitious from the start (myself included). It doesn’t help that the MR-removed video of their debut performance shows that only 2 or 3 of them are capable of singing live, and that their album jacket cover eerily reminds one of Gee… (makes one wonder if they are actually being made to literally copy SNSD)
So naturally, after stepping into the wrong limelight, they will want to lay off the heat by trying to change the meaning behind their words. But the damage has already been done. And just like with any politician out there, any further statements such as this one are simply seen as excuses because you honestly won’t know if it is sincerely what they meant from the start.
Nonetheless, everyone, please don’t forget that our Nine girls once had a similarly tough start too. They started out in the shadow of Wonder Girls (you have to admit Tell Me and Nobody was a bigger hit), and had one of the largest groups of antis out there back then. They too look up to their seniors, but the reason why they didn’t get such shit as CHI-CHI did is because (imo) they used a better choice of words. Instead of saying “We want to overtake…” they said “We look up/admire so-and-so sunbaenim” or “We hope to be as good as so-and-so one day”. Do you still remember what Hyoyeon said in Star Golden Bell in 2008? “If it’s just a small wish, we hope to advance into Asia this year.” Some of you may think that this last one sounds similar to what CHI-CHI said, but there are actually subtle differences in the tone and such that is simply, shall we say, the smarter way to say it?
I can only say that CHI-CHI is unfortunate, and that they presently being in no condition to compete for that goal doesn’t help either. But please! Our girls were hated once too. Don’t let SNSD get antis because SONES are being overly-aggressive towards new groups!
That said however, they can try to be as good as SNSD, but they can never be them.
ByunTaeng’s vocals and dorkiness, the Sica Effect, Sunny Bunny’s Aegyo that Calls for a Punch, the heart-melting eye-smile of our Brighter than Gems, Fany Fany Tiffany, the powerful moves of our Dancing Queen, the pure hotness of our Black Pearl, the tall, beautiful and ever-hungry Shikshin, the Deer-eyed Drama and CF Queen, and our pure and innocent “Goguma over Boys (except Yonghwa)” Maknae. Try and find a replacement dude.
i agree! everything you said was totally right! the first time i read it ‘overtake snsd’ indeed i got angry – chichi shouldve said it earlier – im sorry to say but the power of 9 cannot be defeated; though chichi wants to be the best and be very well loved; they need to do better but will never be able to match the skill points of snsd. (my perspective)
The only problem I have with this new new group is that I listened to them and they weren’t that good. They are average to mediocre at best, nothing special. I didn’t really see the talent in them.
i dont want to sound bitter and all about this, but im really sowiee to CHI-CHI, yoo will always have to be in the shadows of Soshi becauseee, well i phink this blog says it all (does amajjing-ly as well, i have to add) OH and why wouldn’t they look up to our lovely girls…i mean likee all us S♥NEs do in one way or another. right?
i agree with “PeachBlossom” about the fact that before it was said that they ‘want to surpass’ them, and then they come out saying this….but i also see where “Niki” is coming from, its truee that looking up to Soshi is a good phing but i can kind of only have agree with what they said.
on a happier note – LOL noticed it as well, when i first saw this post, i was likee YAY(=D blessed to see them in more beautiful photo), another lovely vita photo or something, but then got disappointed when it turned out to be CHI-CHI
***i’m not saying that CHI-CHI isn’t good or that i’m saying that they’re cr@p or anything likee that…its just – to be likee Soshi is an impossible feat***
ooops edit – *but i can only half agree with what they said
somehow i think they just wanted to grab attention with that statement..
I agree with Niki and thegreatjedi.
The way I see it, first impressions aren’t always the way to go sometimes. The problem is, people tend to stick with a bad first impression of something or somebody throughout rather than forget about it, move on and focus on the future.
Now, I’ve only been into this fandom for an elongated while, but I can effortlessly relate to this in some sort of way. Rookies will always be referred to as having a remarkable level of enthusiasm, ambition and aspiring to be in the same league as their seniors, but the intention of upstaging their seniors is never what they meant, especially for CHI-CHI’s case.
What I don’t understand is how people often misinterpret certain statements as the opposite and adhere by the statement like it’s some sort of mandatory code of conduct. Who knows? Perhaps CHI-CHI could have came up with an impromptu answer expressing their sincere feelings about truly achieving super-stardom like SNSD and conquering all of Asia but failed to express it succinctly and unequivocally during earlier interviews, something which is not entirely unavoidable in most cases.
I’m sure most of the SONEs’ on here can relate to how SNSD first started out in the shadow of other more popular groups at the time like Wonder Girls and TVXQ. But why should we harbour different feelings to something else similar (CHI-CHI) merely for the protection of our beloved ladies when SNSD themselves have been in the same shoes before? If we’ve been through this kinds of events and know how they eventually roll out, then we already have the answers to solve the problem.
All in all, the (minor) backlash they’re currently receiving about being pretentious and arrogant based on a few misunderstood statements is pretty stupid. Dwelling on petty things like this won’t solve a problem that is basically non-existent and/or shouldn’t even been brought up in the first place.
If I can look at the rookie group, accept them for who they are and focus on their future activities and achievements with eagerness at heart, without any of the bad news of their first impression leading to a rough start in a competitive music industry interfering. Then I’m sure everybody will be in a much happier place and the ladies will be proud to have CHI-CHI as their “Student”.
*Caught off guard*.
Sorry, meant to say…
Cut the rookies some slack yo.
just be careful when you speak……anyway, its good that you clarify yrself before anythg worse happen….
SNSD is really your role model…..
SNSD, fighting! ^^
I don’t understand why people are freaking out about this. Sure they’ve just debuted, but it’s definitely a compliment to soshi, they’re not some crazed rookies who think they can be instantly as popular as snsd. It shows just how fabulous soshi is that new groups look up to them and want to emulate their careers. Best of luck to chi chi in the future. They’re inexperienced, of course they may say some well-intentioned statements that come off the wrong way or get misinterpreted. I’m sure chi chi do realise how hard working and dedicated snsd is thats enable them to enjoy their success and realise that they too will have to work hard. We need to support chi chi, or at least hold your tongues, as the kpop community should be a friendly and supportive one.
I just don’t like them… maybe hate… i dont really think that they would be able to overdo our girl…
just no talents….
SNSD Fighting! ❤
What would SNSD think of you if they knew you hated a new girl group for no reason? Exactly.
me too.. i just don’t like them.. whether they truly treat snsd as idol or what.. i think that they are just using snsd for publicity.. further more they can’t sing.. their mr removed.. *shake head*
with right combination & hard work, it could be done i guess.
But they are correct,… SNSD IS Asia’s top girl group
Well guys, if you have been reading the comments here, I’m sure you’ll agree that we should let CHI-CHI have a chance to improve and show what they’ve got (even if they can never replace SNSD).
Who we should question, though, is CHI CHI’s agency. I mean, look at these pics. Just what is Yedang Entertainment trying to achieve?
compared to
and
compared to
I’m past the stage where I’m against this group, but I still think the agency is going overboard with the “be like SNSD” idea.
Of course they would say that.
Sones should cut CC some slack…instead of bad mouthing them afterall everyone has the right to dream and make dreams come true. Best wishes and good luck to, CC take that leap of faith ( as SNSD did ) even though you may crawl, stumble and fall and never give up trying.
it’s actually quite shickong to see fellow sones bash on this girl group like they committed a crime. why are you so cocky?
they wanted to express their admiration towards SNSD and maybe they didn’t express themselves well the first time, but now they clarified it. period. it’s stupid to always hold a grudge against them, just cause they didn’t express themselves perfectly in the beginning. first off they are human as well, so mistakes happen, and secondly, gosh, aren’t you happy to see some idols looking up to your own favorite group? what is this all about? loving SNSD doesn’t mean bashing every other idol around them.
Hmm… I’m pretty sure SNSD would delightfully accept and “embrace” CHI-CHI as a rookie group with latent potential and intrinsic talent that is sure to have many achievements come their way. Why, you ask? I don’t know… perhaps one of the reasons is because I find that everyone should be given a chance to shine, who knows what tricks CHI-CHI might have up their sleeves (not bad ones, of course),
Since the rookie group has obviously grabbed the attention of SNSD (or not) with their ardent but unfortunately misinterpreted comments about their goals, well… I think SNSD will view them in a different light, being able discern sincere intentions from malicious ones, thus “accepting” them and all that.
However, since CHI-CHI has to earn themselves the respect of others and a reputation on par with the precedents set by their seniors and/or K-Pop Group prior to them in order to prove themselves (for all of the fame and glory) to the masses after all of the tomfoolery and hoo-ha that has happened regarding misunderstood statements in earlier interviews and whatnot, then so be it.
It could be a sight to behold, just like the “Miracle” that is SNSD, or it could flop abysmally. Either way, the fate of CHI-CHI rests entirely on the decisions they make in the present that affects the outcome for the future, not dwelling on the past which holds us/them back.
KTHXBAI =D
*Up their sleeves to guarantee their success.
facepalm.jpb for a third response.
*Achievements come their way, just like SNSD (themselves).

i remembered the comment of overtaking over snsd or some crap like that then i watched chi chi’s live performance with mr removed in i was like hmmm. they have long way to go. making comments like that mean nothing with such a performance like that.
I Fully Agree with Terrez here with regards to CHI-CHI and their aim to be as good as and/or supersede our 9 “angels” in terms of popularity and success ;). We as SONES should show some graciousness and not pass sarcastic remarks on-line for a few “inappropriate” comments made in press interviews :). It’s always good to dream Big 😀 ! Doing so (i.e. giving/passing hurtful/discouraging comments) makes us as a fan group no better than the “antis” that we are so vehemently against 😉 😀 !!! Let’s show the world at large that SONES can accept aspiring new artistes in this “fickle” market known as the K-Pop industry without resorting to unwarranted “bad-mouthing” :). After all, our “angelic” 9 started out being known as SM Entertainment’s “warehouse sale girl pop group” and just LOOK where they are now (practically NUMBER 1 in everything that they do and/or promote) 😀 😀 😀 !!! Our “9” will ALWAYS be the BEST regardless of what happens 😀 !!!
I think people are forgetting that CHI CHI made a statement prior to this one about surpassing SNSD and be as popular in Asia as well, which personally irritated not only the majority of SONES but even antis as well. Its good to be enthusiastic when you’re a rookie but making a statement that you can’t backed up (like there disastrous MR removed performance) also shows that they’re not as good as they said they are. Instead of making statements like that, why didn’t they just showed it in their performance so that they don’t get a bad rap from the public. And seriously, their debut song is the worst…even SNSD’s Into the New World is considered one of the best debuts for any group.
Regardless of what was said or how anyone wants to take it, i believe…
Any girl group with a strong passion for their art and take their careers seriously “should” aim for the Top Spot, and it just so happens that “right now its Girls’ Generation!”
HMMMMMM i think we sholud not criticize the CHICHI cuz remember when SNSD is not that popular……
aside lets see wat chichi can do in the future who knows being a role model of SNSD makes them
a super star in a case where they don’t copy the 9 angels ………….
I Have Only 1 Wish That Wish is
I Wish SNSD leave a History Just Like Micheal Jackson
^_^ 4 ever 2 Be a sone
I have nothing against Chi chi and I actually feel sorry for them, but I feel like they’re trying to cover for their “oops” comment. Knowing how harsh kpop fans can be they should’ve known better then to say they wanted to overtake or surpass a certain group. I don’t know if they were told to say those things for more publicity or what, but I think they’ve learned their lesson and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be as good as another group.
wat??they think that it’s easy to replace SNSD??
overconfident!!!
SNSD is unreplaceable!!!
just stop dreaming…please wake up and open your eyes…
SNSD legend~~
Nice! Our ladies paving the road and guiding the future girl groups….but no one for the next millennium will even come CLOSE to being or winning or singing or looking or whatever like the one and only SO NYUH SHI DAE lol
SOSHI FIGHTING!!
Looking up to your role model is fine…. but to the extent of copying the same theme as SNSD is a bit erm..
