[TRANS] It’s a partial translation of Sports Donga news article regarding SNSD’s 3rd single in Japan.
Once SNSD announces a new single next year in February, they will aim for the top spot on Oricon weekly Chart.
SNSD will announce their 3rd single “Oh!” on 2/2/2011. The title song “Oh!” from their 2nd full album which was announced on January in Korea is a song with easy melody and has a lively rhythm that is similar to the J-Pop style, which is why the Japanese regard this song as their favorite SNSD song. According to SM entertainment, “Oh!” is the most popular song the Japanese fans tend to cosplay or cover on YT video.
Will it be a big hit in Japan just like it is in Korea?

Anyways, I hope this is gunna be the last song thats converted to Japanese. I can’t sing Gee or Genie right anymore because I keep on switching from the Korean version to the Japanese version.

Maybe I’m a selfish SOne, but I prefer our girls singing in Korean (at least primarily). Don’t get me wrong, I really like the nipponese versions of Genie and Gee, but to release songs in nipponese from the get-go? No, I’m not down with that. SNSD is Korean (albeit with a huge international fanbase as well) but more so, they epitomize the greatest things about Korean culture and feminine strength. THIS NEXT BIT MIGHT BE KINDA OFFENSIVE, SO BE FOREWARNED but quite frankly, (due to the still-recent unpleasantness of the first half of the twentieth century) Japan doesn’t deserve So Nyuh Shi Dae, and should feel lucky to get translated/adapted versions of their songs. Asking for purely nipponese SNSD songs is too much (in my mind) like capitulation. Unfair? maybe a little, but I’d say a true Japanese SOne would LEARN KOREAN so they can enjoy and spazz appropriately to the purest form of Soshism!
Japanese fans do learn Korean. The girls have stated in interviews that they were surprised by the large number of fans who cheered them in Korean, wrote to them in Korean, and followed the group before they ever came to Japan.
It’s important how music can unify countries, for both both societal and economic benefits. SNSD is taking a very worldly and positive step for the future by not being xenophobic, by helping bridge the gap between nations, and by learning other languages to better communicate with multiple communities.
I don’t know why, but I’m with you on this. But I would rather SNSD have new Japanese songs. I very much prefer their hit Korean songs to remain Korean.

I think you’re taking this language thing a little too seriously. Language is only a medium of communication, a tool with which you use to convey and exchange ideas. It does not change a person’s identity or what they represent. Creating a new Japanese-only song for SNSD does nothing to change the fact that they’re Korean or that they epitomize Korean culture and feminine strength. If you think by singing and speaking in Japanese, SNSD have somehow degraded themselves, then you seriously need to reevaluate your line of reasoning, because that’s borderline on prejudice.
I also do not agree with your statement that Japan does not deserve SNSD. Do I think that many other Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines deserve SNSD? Yes. But Japan is the world’s second largest music market and it’s simply too big of an opportunity for SNSD not to advance and improve their careers there. The Japanese fans are indeed spoiled, but they also repay SNSD with tremendous amounts of loyal support that exceeds many other places. I think all international SONEs have had a desire to learn Korean for SNSD, J-SONEs included. And a true SONE would support the girls no matter if they sing in Korean, Japanese, English, or some other language.
At the end of the day, music is a universal language, and the fans like us are simply asking for NEW MUSIC MATERIAL regardless of language (vs rehashing old songs). We don’t mind because we think SNSD have the unique ability to break down barriers and bring different fans together through their work. I don’t think they would receive nearly as much love if they had a cynical view of the world and choose to box themselves in Korea and spoke only Korean. Please don’t be selfish and see things with an open mind, I think that’s what SNSD would do, wouldn’t you if you were a true SONE?

Although some of you want Oh! to be the last Japanese remakes, I do sense that a RDR Japanese version will be coming. XDD
Oh that makes sense, but correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t onii-chan in Japanese a more literal meaning of older brother than oppa is? And would it be “oh oh oh on-ii-chan aishteru”?
If it were up to me, I’d want “Run Devil Run” and “Hoot” translations, because to me those 5 (“Gee”, “Genie”, “Oh!”, RDR, and “Hoot”) are the essential SNSD songs.
Beyond that point, if they continue to promote in Japan, I think it would be wise to make some original Japanese songs. 🙂
And I don’t necessarily mean as single releases either. Actually, now that I think about it, I think they probably should stop the Japanese cover singles with “Oh!”, but maybe do “Hoot” and “Run Devil Run” on the album, when/if they do a full Japanese release.
It is! Because I knew Japanese first, it was really surprising for me to hear Koreans using oppa the way they actually do, rather than what I read the literal meaning was. lol.
There are other forms of brother. They could say Onii, Ani, or Niichan. They might go with Senpai too, which means ‘upperclassman’ or a friend of higher status.
Who knows, maybe the girls will keep oppa and saranghae since the meanings are easy to figure out. The Wonder Girls kept saranghae in the English version of one of heir songs.
With’ Genie’ and ‘Gee’ already being big hits and fortifying SNSD’s place in Japan, I look forward to seeing ‘Oh!’ remade in Japanese along with the MV.
I’ve used to watch a lot of Japanese MVs’ in the past when Japanese culture was all the hype-in-happening, I won’t be surprised if SNSD gets some ideas’ from those particular MVs’ that pertains to the concept which ‘Oh!’ portrays.
Seems like a natural fit. On the general question of remakes, Hoot was a good way to mitigate things for the non-Japan-based fan, so I’m more or less sated where original material is concerned. And I’m very curious about all the cute little changes they decide to make to the tune, the vid, the linguistic things, all that.
I knew this was going to be the next single after “Gee”!

I echo the sentiments about another remake. It’s time for new songs SME, 2 remakes was enough to “fortify” their already strong position. However, I would support whatever the girls are doing, hope they will finally achieve the Oricon #1 Weekly that Gee was not able to do.
In spite of the fact that SNSD is rehashing their old songs in Japanese, which may sound like a waste of time to some of us, it’s still good to listen to SNSD’s songs in whatever language they sing because they sound good, catchy and downright addictive.
My view on this is with instrumental music, you’re exposed to a lot of different subgenres, so it should come as no surprise that with multiple concepts and/or language(s) in their music videos’, you end up liking them all no matter what.
Who knows, perhaps in a turn of events, they may be composing 2 or more songs contemporarily, the Japanese Oh! and another new song(s) for 2011. But with priority as such, SNSD will focusing on JPN Oh! first while slowly composing up with bits and pieces on the aforementioned new song(s), So on and forth, if you get what I mean.

i am excited for Oh! would i have like new song yes but this none the less hypes me up for when the FULL JAPANESE ALBUM is released because u know their already working on it.

I’ve got to say that I’m pretty happy to hear this. SNSD’s promotions in Japan can definitely result in more achievements in the future. But I’m not very sure about re-doing their old songs into a Jap version. Personally, I’d prefer it if they released new songs in Jap. Either way, they’d rocket up high anyway.
Okay, it won’t let me reply to replies, so I’ll put them here…
I realized when I wrote my OP that people would find it contentious. The way I was thinking about these matters, I easily could have (and, maybe, should have) written 1000 words fully explaining the nuances of my line of reasoning. I opted for brevity and was predictably misunderstood.
I have no issue with the choices that SNSD makes. Learning and speaking other languages, promoting and releasing songs and albums in other languages – Great! Of course these girls are too talented and generally awesome to be limited to only Korean. Yes, they have universal appeal that makes them natural ambassadors to other cultures – of course this is a great thing! Understanding and compassion are fueled by education and exposure to different perspectives.
The point I was trying to make is this: I don’t like the idea of Japan (or Japanese fans) demanding or pressuring SNSD to release songs in Japanese. Do you see the nuance there? If SNSD *chooses* to do so – great! I fully support it and want it to do well, make lots of sales, expand Soshi influence, all that good stuff. But it needs to originate from SNSD’s desire, not outside pressure. Please don’t misunderstand, as any good fan, I love and want the best for our girls. I want their success but I also want to protect them from harm. Much of this comes down to SM, unfortunately, a business driven by profit. It kills me to see these girls overworked and tired (albeit still cheerful and excited to perform), spending so much time away from their families. That is why I’m so glad there’s 9 of them – they can rely on each other (and of course their staff and managers and adoring fans who also want to protect them). This is the magic of SoNyuhShiDae.
I realize that countries are composed of individuals. I’m not trying to generalize about all of Japan or every Japanese fan. I’ve seen many of the same videos you all have seen – I know there’s great, ebullient, driven J-SOnes who are learning Korean *just* to connect more w/ SNSD, which is awesome. However, however much we should be “looking towards a brighter happier future”, I’ve just taken way too many history courses, and have heard too many stories from the older generation of my family, to just say, “ahh, let’s just forget the past and be totally cool with Japan”. This is another nuance-y point. Because although a nation is composed of individuals, it is known that groups of individuals can form a kind of separate consciousness – often to disastrous results. Yes, the past is the past, but 65 years is not such a long time. Am I so wrong to doubt that a society capable of things like Unit 731, the Nanjing Massacre, and the systematic propagation of “comfort women” has been able to *completely* change its attitude? Especially concerning these 9 beloved Korean girls?
Is it truly “narrow-minded” to show a little doubt, for the sake of protecting 소녀시대?
tl;dr don’t like the idea of Japan pressuring SNSD into anything, b/c I still somewhat don’t trust Japanese society in regards to Korea.
i understand where you’re coming from…and it seems its not just japan that’s pressuring the girls, its also the fans and antis who are constantly criticizing their activities in japan; whether it be album sales, their lack of japanese skills, etc. i think that’s the reason why SM decided to stop their “Hoot” promotions because concerned fans like you and me have commented on how the girls are physically and albeit emotionally exhausted to the max.
Unless you think we’re all Japanese SONEs here demanding SNSD to release new music in Japanese, you really don’t have a point. I haven’t seen anyone *demand* SNSD to do anything, it’s simply that everyone have been looking forward to them creating new music in pure Japanese since their Japan debut, whether it be K-SONEs, J-SONEs, or international SONEs of all kind, we have all voiced similar views. It is the natural step to take when you want to be successful in a foreign country.
Also, music created with Japanese lyrics in mind will also have its own attractive qualities that Korean or English lyrics cannot adequately capture, and the vise versa applies, to me the original Korean versions of Genie, Gee and Oh will always be superior. So instead of making something that long-time SONEs already know will be inferior to the original, we have been looking forward to them creating truly unique Japanese songs that demonstrates SNSD is far more capable than remaking old music in a new language. If you’re a KPOP fan you should know TVXQ and BoA have been in Japan for a long time and they have many Japanese-only songs, if SNSD wants to get to that level of success, they have to do more, and SONEs like us just want to see them succeed, it has nothing to do with language or the history of tension between the countries.
This blog is not an appropriate place to bring history and politics into. I come from a country that was the biggest victim of Japan in World War II, but what happened then has nothing to do SNSD, KPOP, JPOP and has zero relevance to the news of Oh! Japanese version. Your points about history are all valid, but this is the wrong forum to forcefully mix such topics with something we hold dear and twist our feelings about it. If you truly dislike Japan as a country because of what they did, wouldn’t something like boycotting their products, or not visiting their country, or trying to raise awareness in an educated manner be far more effective than asking a Korean girl group not to sing in Japanese language? Seems a little far-fetched to me.

when i heard about this rumor, i was very worried…but from what the statement said, its a “single” so technically, its not an album. i’m guessing this is a detour of some sort for japanese fans because billboard article said they’ll release their first japanese album in spring 2011. i’ll look forward to how “Oh” would sound in japanese…the word “oppa” is on everyone’s mind right now, lol!
