Finally, here’s the performance to >>this<< stage. Sadly, it’s only a fancam 😦
Is it just me or does Jessi sound like she doesn’t give a fuck, which isn’t normal but still… different? It sounds like she’s either off key, really sick (something is up with her sinus ‘cuase she sounds rather nasally), and then at the end it sounds like she’s out of breath. I so want to make a JeNy reference about that last one, but I won’t.
It wouldn’t surprise me if she was sick though. I mean, crammed up in a dorm with other sick girls… And wasn’t Tiffany sick just recently?

I think she sounds nasaly, which is not what she normally sounds like, but there could be other reasons. I, too, wouldn’t be surprised if she were sick…
Not much should be made of the sound captured via a fancam. They squeeze out too much of the sound to be a reliable source of judgement. Plus, the position can make a big difference.
Also, a listener’s perception might be affected by context — the original broadcast was in bright sunshine and pastel colors while this has a slightly depressing, overcast quality. Close your eyes and listen.
Jessica always had a nasal, tinny quality — with a microphone, that is. In other videos in which she sang with an overhead or tabletop mic, she had a fuller sound. Which suggests to me that the mics are designed to pick up her higher register.
She did seem to be off pitch occasionally. Typical of dancing and singing, however. Other SNSD performances suffer in the same way. It’s encouraging in that it means the singing is live. When they sound perfect, I begin to suspect lip-synching (and I listen carefully to determine how perfectly it matches the album’s track).
heh, seems like you and I are very picky about sound. It’s interesting to find someone who tries hard to see if it’s being lip synced or not… I don’t knwo, I’m very picky when it comes to voices.
I closed my eyes and listened, and Jess still sounds congested to me. And you’re right, just like BoA, Jessica’s got one of those voices that sound different under certain circumstances. Like BoA sounds LESS nasal-like when singing live, and her voice sounds MUCH stronger as well.

Jess could very well be congested. If you’re familiar enuf with her voice you might be able to tell even thru a fancam microphone. The mic on the phone made me wary of trying.
As for lipsynching, I’ve found I can setup a video and the soundtrack from the album and match them up. It’s impossible for a singer to match all the dynamics of a song, so if they perfectly match, I’m 99% certain that they’re using a track in the “live” performance.
Actually, I don’t need to go that far. My ear is pretty good with songs I’m very familiar with — I can usually tell if it’s being lipsynched before too long. But it’s nice to know I can prove it if I have to.
