At a press conference on August 10th at the Grand Hilton Hotel in Hongeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu in Seoul, Japan’s top idol, KinKi Kids’ Koichi Domoto talked about SNSD and Kara, two groups that are hugely popular in Japan right now.
Koichi Domoto said, “I had been on a program with Kara before but as for SNSD, I only managed to meet them briefly. At the same time, looking at their activeness in pursuing various areas, I think they are pretty amazing. I try to calm myself as I still feel nervous before going up on stage but it looks like they do not tremble and manage to deliver great and enjoyable performances”.
He then praised the girls by saying, “They are really awesome”.
Looks like the girls hard work is leading to extreme success since their entrance into the Japanese market!

Okay, I’ll admit I have no idea who this guy is. But if he is indeed Japan’s *top* idol, then his praise of the Girls is extremely important. There were plenty of Japanese celebrities who were also mesmerized by their concerts. I think the term is called “social proof.” A casual Japanese fan may be shaking their head at all of the k-pop groups headed their way. But if that person is a fan of Koichi Domoto or a whole host of other celebrities who have praised SNSD then, by extension, the value of the Girls go up in their eyes as well and they are instantly set apart from the other kpop groups.
The message is clear to the Japanese fan: Shojo Jidai is the idol to your idols, so they are worthy of your attention. How many of us have checked out a song/group/book/drama/movie/actor/food because someone we admire (an idol, a trusted friend) had praised it?
But.then.again… This Japanese Jaejoong was speaking at a Korean press conference, so maybe he said this to increase *his* value in Korea. (Like i said, I don’t know who this guy is so he may already be famous in Korea as well). It’s not quite social proof (the girls weren’t praising him) but maybe he was trying to grab that halo effect from the Girls in the same way that corporations pay to have their names associated with them through endorsements. (?)
