Dunno if I should have written about this…but I really wanted to. And seeing as her birthday is coming soon, why not?
As much as you want to talk about ‘the power of nine’ or ‘nothing but 9’, it’s terribly obvious that the SNSD fandom is split into pretty much 9 mini-fandoms. If you are someone who really loves all nine, then hats off to you and kudos, but the larger part of the SNSD-fandom will of course have their biases and what have you.
This is perfectly fine of course. Under the umbrella of ‘SNSD fandom’, the 9 mini-fandoms all have their individual qualities. For instance, the SeoMates all seem to have developed parental attitudes and all act like they’re watching their daughter grow up, GorJess Spazzers are almost like cultists for their goddess, and you won’t find people more anything-goes and fun-loving as a HyoHunnie. You catch my drift?
The problem is when there are anti-fans within the fandom. Like…what is that? Having a bias is one thing, but when you like one girl and actually hate another, don’t even call yourself a S♡NE.
So far, what I’ve noticed is that the member that cops the most criticism and the like from ‘fans’ these days is Yoong. Mostly, it’s generated from jealousy. “Why does Yoona always get to be in the centre?”, “Yoona’s so overrated.”, “Why Yoona when x-member is so much prettier?”.
Comments like this hurt. I don’t even have a Yoona-bias, but seeing comments like that seriously gut me.
This kind of thing is really only present in newer fans, or just those kids who can’t open their eyes. From some of the comments I’ve seen on this site, some of our readers seem to have some negative sentiments toward Yoona. It’s fine with older fans…as most of you know – you end up growing to appreciate all the girls.
But I’m going to take it upon myself to educate those anti-Yoona ‘fans’ out there. Some people might think it’s unnecessary and I’m making a big deal out of nothing and that we shouldn’t pay attention to antis, but sorry, it’s just my personality to want to correct someone when they’re….wrong.
One: Why is Yoona always in the centre?
- Every group has the ‘centre’ member. In this case, it’s Yoona. Right from the start, Yoona was going to be the ‘poster girl’ of SNSD. Even when SNSD hadn’t been fully formed yet. She had the innocent look that SM wanted the group to have, she had appeal, and she’d already done enough work in the entertainment industry for people to recognize her, having been in CFs, magazines and music videos. The reaction to Yoona from the beginning was positive so SM decided to keep putting her in the centre, and the centre-Yoong thing just stuck. You have to understand that Yoona didn’t ask to be put there though. Whatever SM says, goes. She never actively searched for popularity or attention, she just sort of sat there and accepted the fact that she was popular and ‘the face’, as did the other members. ‘Centre-Yoong’, ‘…you are the face of SNSD!’, words from leader Taeng’s own mouth.
- Besides, SNSD wouldn’t have the popularity it has today without Yoona. All the members helped but she really gave SNSD the leg-up they needed in the beginning. International fans might not see how much Yoona affected SNSD’s exposure as we actually have to use the internet to watch Korean dramas, but imagine flicking on the television and seeing Yoona on it almost every day in dramas and CFs and tell me something like that wouldn’t affect SNSD’s popularity.
Two: Yoona’s overrated.
Is she really? Let’s cut this one into subsections.
- Yoona isn’t that pretty.
When people say Yoona is beautiful, there are people who go “She’s not THAT pretty”. I think they fail to realise that Yoona’s fans (real fans) aren’t saying that she’s stunningly drop dead gorgeous like a model something, they’re talking about Yoona’s innate and natural brightness and innocent feel that makes her even prettier than that.(Beauty is subjective. That’s my personal opinion pfft.)
- Yoona isn’t that talented.
Yoona’s forte is acting, and after that it’s dance. As someone who has actually seen You Are My Destiny, Cinderella Man, 9 Ends 2 Outs, etc., I’m going to tell you she is talented. Sure, she’s not the best actress and she can be awkward at times, but the girl has potential. Did you know she pretty much filmed 170+ episodes of YAMD on 2-3 hours of sleep most nights, and she would practice by talking to herself whenever she got a break? Did you know that she learnt how to do different expressions by recording herself making faces in a mirror? Keep this in mind, and go watch the first episode of Cinderella Man or something. Yoona’s first appearance in the show will probably surprise you, I know I was shocked. Like I said, dance comes next. She doesn’t have the power or technique Hyoyeon has, she doesn’t have the fluidity or stage presence that Yuri has, she doesn’t have the charisma that Sooyoung has and she doesn’t have the elegance that Seohyun has. But she’s not a main dancer for nothing. Her moves are clean, sharp, on the beat, she never misses a move and she delivers them well. Plus, she’s picked up popping recently which impressed me really. Of course, acting and dancing aside, many people will argue that Yoona can’t sing. Leading me to another point.
- Yoona can’t sing.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you Yoona’s a great singer. We both know that’s not true. She gets the easiest lines in many of SNSD’s songs so I can’t really tell you the limits of her ability either. But from what I’ve seen, she can sing. Not fantastically, but she’s certainly not tone deaf or anything like that. Kim Jungeun’s Chocolate, MTV Girls On Top…I guess it was enough for little old me to think “Ah…so she can sing”, even if she’s the weakest singer out of the nine. What Yoona lacks is confidence. When she’s singing pop songs and dancing, she does fine, but have you heard this girl sing a ballad? She sounds downright terrified. Her voice trembles and her expression looks like she’s singing before a blood-thirsty mob or something. I feel bad seeing it really. But my respect level for her went way up when she actually sang at SNSD’s Concert. Many people complained about how her performance was boring and how her singing was ‘blah’. That’s not how I saw it though. I thought to myself, this girl who has so little confidence in her singing voice is actually doing a singing performance? I was impressed. Even if her performance wasn’t anything special, she chose to sing even when she could have chosen to do a more dance-oriented performance like Hyoyeon or Yuri. It was like she was telling us she was willing to sing or something. I was proud of her at least. I know many of us fans are hoping she continues to work hard and improve in the future.
3: Why Yoona when x-member could do it better?
- Why does Yoona get to be in that CF when this member is prettier? Why is Yoona the star of the Cabi MV when that member is sexier? Why does this magazine shoot have Yoona when the other member is better at modeling? Nothing much to say here other than what the company wants, the company gets. The mentality of disliking Yoona because she’s super popular…doesn’t really exist in Korea. It’s an international thing. We have a different way of thinking you see. In Korea, Yoona’s super popular, and being super popular, companies like Samsung or Innisfree will want her as a model, and as long as they’re paying good money and SM agrees to it, Yoona is going to be their model whether she wants to be or not. It’s not like Yoona wants the attention to herself. Wasn’t it Yoona that said that Hyoyeon should be invited onto a variety show? Wasn’t it Yoona who said that Tiffany always works really hard and takes pride in her job? If that’s not promoting the other members I don’t know what is. Please realise that while SNSD members will say that SM is a really nice place because their company wants them to make them look good, SM doesn’t give SNSD any control. The members don’t have control over what positions or jobs they get. Wanting your own favourite member to get exposure is fine. Like, there’s no problem with a comment like “Oh, another Yoona CF. I wish Hyoyeon would get a CF…”. That’s fine. But comments like “That b**ch yonna again wtf she should f**k of let soo do it shes better at it”…I’m seriously going to get angry. =_=
I’m not sure if I covered everything I wanted to say…Sorry about the wall of text by the way. But please, if you have something you want to say about Yoona, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll gladly hear you out.
I’m not asking you to love Yoona. I’m not even asking you to like Yoona. What I’m asking is that you give her a chance. She really is a great girl. ^^
The longer you are in the SNSD-fandom, the more you’ll come to realise that the soshi-bond and appreciating all nine pieces of the jigsaw puzzle is the most important thing.

The following is something I posted on SSF, and I think it fits well with this (though not as detailed as Proctie’s OP). I struggled with the WHY and HOW of Yoona. I KNEW I liked her, more and more as the days went by, but I couldn’t put a finger on it. If SONES know the struggle that Tiffany went through to overcome the culture shock, then SONES need to appreciate what having an Yoona at the forefront does for SNSD. She’s gorgeously complex and at the same time utterly honest. If you can set down your prejudices for one minute and just look at the kid, she’ll break your heart with who she is. She is the spirit of SNSD, the core, she embodies the elan and joy of what SNSD is.
Just down the jaded glasses and LOOK at her, feel her emotion, her heart. I did, and now I can appreciate 1000 fold better the gestalt of nine.

I’ve wanted to express my opinion about Yoona for quite sometime, but it’s difficult. No matter how much I’ve been thinking about the ‘face’ of Soshi, she’s really tough to conceptualize. It’s like trying to read a forest and realizing I’m standing too close. Take a step back. Another, another, another. No matter how far back I step, I still can’t see all of her.
I do know that Yoona is as close to the complete package as exists in idolhood.
But no matter how much I’ve studied her, for me Yoona is still very much a mystery. I know her members know the real her, because she’s loved so much within the group, but she’s either REALLY good at hiding the real Yoona, or we’re seeing the real Yoona every time the cameras roll. She either hides everything or nothing. I have to believe it’s the latter. She’s probably the most photographed and filmed member, but the dumbfounding thing about her is that no matter how much we’ve seen of her to date, I think we’ve only scratched the surface. This girl is deep.
So many idols cultivate one facet, one view that they present to the public, but Yoona is a constantly moving target. She’s a CF model, an actress, a dancer, a dongsaeng, an unnie, a student, an utter beauty, sexy or goofy, a total prankster, awkward and graceful, naturally thin, but with an incredible s-line (the result of endless hard work in a gym, you can be sure), delicate and strong, playful, moody, angel and brat, self-aware, self-deprecating, prideful, humble, quiet and loud. She’s killer in the signature Soshi tight jeans. She rivals Yuri in that respect. She can laugh with her whole body like Sunny, and then shut it off by main will alone and do the job.
And about that job. She’s dead serious about work. Professional enough to humble most professionals. She’s a girl who’s never dated, but can pull off acting like a married woman. Get this. She practiced her emotions by recording herself making faces in the mirror. What does that say about her skill and natural talent? Simply mind blowing? Yeah. I’ll go with that. When she was filming her daily drama, she worked incredible hours, went to highschool, and did the Soshi schedule. Yes, SM cut her a lot of slack when there were conflicts, but that just meant there was rarely a free moment in her life. The others knew that, and while the impulse for jealousy might be a natural reaction considering her success, knowing what she was going through, I seriously doubt any of them envied her the sheer amount of work it required. The award for best newcomer? Icing. Sheer icing.
Another thing I can’t get a handle on is her beauty. Without a doubt, she is. But HOW? Really, eggs and foreheads don’t have anything to do with this. It’s all internal. Many people who are used to being photographed know they have certain angles that appeal more than others. That’s why you only see one angle in numerous photographs, because the person being photographed is trying to present their best side. They’ve studied themselves.
Yoona doesn’t do this. Browse the interwebs. The pictures of her are left facing, right facing, chin up, chin down, straight on. Endless variety. She’s one of those people that can be beautiful from almost any angle, and at the SAME time, not be. It’s like she has a beauty switch she can throw on and off at will. IF she wants, she’s heartbreakingly beautiful. If she doesn’t she can be plain, or just plain odd. It’s not a matter of camera angles, hair styles, make up, or any of the typical methods idols use. She IS or ISN’T depending on what she wants to show.
Watch any Soshi video, and if Yoona is present, she’s usually front and center. I thought for a long time about why that is. She isn’t like Jessica or Yuri with their cool or hot in-your-face sex appeal. Sorry, she’s not. But there is something there. Is it her doe eyes with their soft and innocent appeal? Perhaps. But contrast that with her mouth. She’s got a way of holding her mouth, slightly crooked, which is more evident when she smiles or laughs. And her laugh is genuine in that it’s utterly hers, not designed but natural. There’s nothing ladylike about it and falls outside of the classic definition of beauty. Alligator. That’s Yoona. No, the reason I think she’s the center of any Soshi formation is because she’s at that crux, between girl and woman. She’s innocent and alluring, non-threatening, promising but never a temptress. She embodies that perfectly. That’s WHO she is.
Maybe that’s my issue. I’m comfortable when I can classify things. This belongs here, that belongs there. Yoona belongs everywhere. She’s comfortable anywhere, in any crowd. She’s the ideal type for a lot of celebrities, but nothing is overwhelming for her. She has no spazz button, no thing or person that causes her to lose herself. It’s always self-possession. A centeredness that is way beyond her years.
Without a doubt she is treasured by her members, no matter how she’s always picked out as the ‘face’ of Soshi. And the pressure of always being under the gun? Always a camera pointing at her? It doesn’t faze her. She just shines and lets us see who she is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her embarrassed. Frankly, at this point, I have to believe that nothing is beyond her strength or depth.
She’s simply incredible.

I haven’t been on this site lately and finally got the time to read this post and wow. Everything you wrote about had me thinking, “Yess, oh yeah!, true true, *nod head*, OMFG SO TRUEE!!!” and more stuff like that.
Couldn’t help but agree so much with what you have wrote. Like seriously, new fans are so one member biased. They haven’t seen SNSD during debut days, they didn’t get to see how much each members rely on each other and how they are proud that if even one members is being in the limelight, that it means that SNSD is in the limelight.
Yet they still have the nerve to call themselves a Sone even though they hate another member.
To be honest, I was lurking around soompi to find subbed videos of the Sweet Potatoe Couple and somebody posted your analysis up. After I was finish reading it, I was thinking that the person who wrote this was a genius and at the end, I saw your credit and couldn’t be more proud that our site have such a great writer.

i agree to everything here. my mom and grandma first knew SNSD through Yoona in YAMD when it aired on TV here. Back then, I wasn’t as crazily into the fandom as i am now (but i was still a fan), but i could still tell that she did her best and i was surprised by her acting skills back then.
every sone doesn’t have to love Yoona like crazy but every sone should still respect every single part of the 9.
I really think that Yoona is pretty and that she’s a great actress. I love her dorkiness and her personality is a real jewel.
Having said that, I honestly think she’s “just a pretty face” in SNSD (as a band). She’s a weak singer and when it comes to dancing…I don’t know why but I feel she just executes her moves properly. Sure, she doesn’t miss a beat but it looks like a school performance all the time to me.
But I’m not an anti or anything. I actually love watching videos of her. She’s just not the member I focus on when they perform !
Well you see, about dancing I never get why people think/say Yoona isn’t a great dancer. As a dancer myself, I’ve watched the girls individually dance in multiple performances and every time Yoona was the one who danced the best. For example, in GENIE, Yoona exudes the right amount of sexiness and sultriness, so much so that she is totally mesmerizing, same goes for MR. TAXI or Gee. For me, Hyo is the best dancer in popping, but she exaggerates her moves too much in SNSD’s choreos. Yuri is great also, although she too tends to want to be too sexy that it’s not sexy anymore…like her sexiness is forced and not natural. I find that Hyuna is more naturally sexy on stage than Yuri to be honest. And strangely, I think that Taeyeon is really a great dancer though, although since she is short, it’s less mesmerizing. The point is, it depends on opinion, but clearly she is in the top 3 for a reason.

It is simply because….. even though she had so much negative comments and bashing statements, she still does her best for the Sones….. Even though the price of her hardwork is being not able to sleep or being sick….. She still continue to perform and improve though she has a hectic schedules….. normally, normal people never done what she had done for the group…. but instead of praising her(like what the other SNSD members do), people hate her…..

Giving credit when it’s due is always important, and as a blogger myself, I’d feel the same way, if not more. Thanks for taking the time to write this up, proctie. If you asked me bluntly, I can only tell you that I ignored (‘overlook’ is an understatement) this post when it was posted. But that’s just me and my excuses. Only when you told me that people were talking about this, did I find time to go through with this post, and more gruelingly, the downpour of comments. You made me ashamed to call myself a Sone, seeing as how I only know so much about each and every member, and considering you came into the fandom much later than I did. Hats off to you. And you wanna know what else is just as real as your points?

It was a great read and I agree with you 200%. I think the most important thing to remember is that given enough time the antis that pop up within the different “mini-fandoms” will slowly die out. Like you said its perfectly fine for fans to have a favorite SNSD girl, having 9 totally different girls pulls in 9 totally different mini-fandoms which is a great thing. In the end all the mini-fandoms are still part of the huge base that supports the success of SNSD. The SNSD girls consider themselves a family because of the bond they built through shared sorrows and joys. They support each other when critics attack any of their sister. By badmouthing any SNSD memeber you not only take the chance of hurting the girl you dislike but you also take the chance of hurting the girl your trying to support. Can you honestly claim that your favorite SNSD is the type of girl that would read your criticism against one of their sisters and accept that type of negative support for themselves. Being a proud “Gorjess Spazzer” and insane “cultist” willing to do about anything to support and protect his “goddess’s” happiness, (which basically means I feel its my sworn duty to attack antis every chance i get lol) I honestly believe that protecting her family falls under the whole protecting her happiness. So i happily flame and attack ALL SNSD antis. Jeez rereading this I really do sound like a cultist o well. Thanks for the post and interesting read.

Beautiful article. I couldn’t have said it any better. Im a SONE and im tired of people claimin to be SONE and hatin on yoona. “We’re nothing without 9” <– does this seem familiar. Its our motto, so please dont claim. I love yoona shes my fav member but i love all of them. I just dont see how u can be a snsd fan and not see yoona's charm. Oh wells, it was a great artice, much props. Hope more people will read this.

An interesting article to read. All accurate and I can see you’re trying not to be overly biased, but perhaps fans should try to tone down on “She can’t sing that well but she can sing” or “She can’t dance that well but she can dance” and just accept that Yoona’s talent lies in acting(?) and modeling, because majority of Kpop idols can’t sing or dance that well but they can sing and dance. That way maybe antis won’t have that much to attack.
Personally I prefer any other member to Yoona as the centre, and I have times when I think Seohyun or Yuri will make a better poster girl, but as long as the public acknowledges and recognizes the rest and not just Yoonayoonayoona, I’m fine with it!
With all respect, I hope the public will give some spotlight to less publicised members like Hyoyeon.
I’ve really enjoyed this article because you did not try to argue your point across. You did not state “Oh, but Yoona IS the best singer”. As a YoonAddict, I will be the first to admit that she is not the strongest vocally. I will confidently say she has improved. You are correct in calling out how she gets flustered during ballads. I hope down the road, she will grow to be more confidant and daring with her musical choices. Thank you for writing this!

I don’t hate her like I used to.
I used to think that what every anti does “Why? Why her when she have no talent?”.
Now, even though I won’t lie saying she has amazing talents, but I believe even the group’s dancing Goddess Hyoyeon isn’t all-rounded — She may dance like there’s no tomorrow but she can’t act. As for singing, I can’t really judge between these two because I’ve not really heard them sing (I’ve only heard leader Taeyeon’s “If”, frankly speaking).
Yoona, I would say, may not have fantastic talents in every aspect — But what we wanna see in our idols these days is being all-rounded irregardless of being ace in every NOT ace in solely one but SUCKS in the others — Isn’t it?
Some (no names mentioned to prevent controversies) may be god-damn awesome in solely ONE aspect, they ace in it, and everybody around praises him/her for it.
But when that person is on a variety programme, and is asked by the MC to present his/her OTHER talents, now tell me, what can the person do?
You know, people get sick of seeing just that SINGLE talent of yours.
And that goes for one of the leader of a team (*hint hint*: which is now ‘rumored’ disbanded) who solely repeats AND repeats AND (yet again) repeats his similar talent on EVERY variety that even their own fans came out commenting.
So I believe that it is always better to be all-rounded and have at least 70% of every talent, rather than excelling in just ONE and no other.
It’ll be a bore to your fans and fans are more demanding of their idols these days you know that. 🙂
yeah,totally agree with you..absolutely i’m a big fan of yoona ..but i love all snsd..for me appreciating the 9 member is more powerful..
Yoona is becoming a hot topic irregardless of good or bad critics.
I disagree Yoona has plastic in certain pictures (in fact alot) which was shown online.
Often than never, it’s because of the angle both pictures was taken at which resulted in the difference of looks.
But I have to agree, Yoona is not much of a talent.
There are countless of artistes who have only underwent training for months or even weeks (meaning they have REAL talents) and debuted right after.
Yoona has training for almost half a decade and yet, she’s still so-so in every aspect — Singing, dancing, acting.
Nothing fantastic in either of her talents.
I’m not saying she’s totally talentless, but if someone can be debuted on-stage after a short period of training, why do you even need to train one for years and only make slight improvement?
I mean:
Her acting — Just average, anybody could imitate her acting in Cinderella Man (*standard expression: blink and her eyelids go up hoping it’s an ‘shock’ expression when actually if you count it throughout the drama, the exact similar expression was repeated about 100 times*). An acting role anyone could be offered to act. But Yoona has an advantage because of her height and looks. Without those, I can confidently say any girl on the street could proudly take up her role in there.
Her dancing — After training for 5 years dancing (and vocals), her dance are nothing fantastic. All her similar dance moves are repeated over and over again and one similar dance move I’ve been noticing which she love to use alot is ‘The S-Wave Dance’. Maybe because she knows that is her best dance of all by ‘S’-ing her body. For other than that, her dance are very (in fact extremely) easy to imitate. That’s why she always dances choreographed dance and never once has she freestyled. Because her dance moves are ever-so-simple. Just watch her SM audition when she was young with no prior training whatsoever, now that’s her original dancing method — Wooden block shaking.

Her singing — I see nothing to comment about her singing.
In conclusion of the 3 very important aspects of a celebrity, she excel in none.
The first 2 like mentioned (acting and dancing) her expressions (for acting) and dance moves (for dancing) are often repeated over and over again till the point people get sick of it.
Nothing fresh about either of it, and her singing concludes it all because I absolutely have nothing to comment regarding that.
Just an ordinary girl with ordinarily basic talents.
Thus, I’ve something to say:
“Without her looks, she is just a normal girl on the streets.”
Any girl who have enough cash in their pockets to plastic their faces exact similar to Yoona, they could be Yoona no. 2. ANYTIME, ANYONE.
So, I’m sorry but I have to agree to what people are saying — Her looks help her to what she is today.
Just an analogy: Imagine she has fugly looks like Susan Boyle (sorry Boyle’s fans for using her as an example, no one else come to my mind =/), who would ever train her up to 5 years when her improvement are minimal, and so hardly visible?
With 5 years of training, she could be BoA no. 2 but oh well, you can’t have everything in life do you?
BoA has the looks + talents BUT she’s short.

Actually, it’s more of YoonA’s die-hard fans.
That’s why I do not like about die-hard fans, sometimes.
Well, they can be supportive to the extent of buying zillions of albums just to let their idols rank top in charts and even buy agency’s shares so as to have a right, though not much, to speak up should their idol be at any disadvantage.
But on the bad side, they can curse, hurl vulgarities (for ill-mannered ones) even, just coz you very frankly point out the weakness of the idols.
They can’t learn to accept facts, when it’s true.
They can’t learn to believe that every human have their weaknesses, there’s no exception even if you are the world’s largest icon.

I guess even the dancing goddess of SNSD, Hyoyeon, do get negative remarks from netizens out there too.

5 years of traning could make you talented (notice, I said TALENTED not FAMOUS coz I know not everyone an achieve overwhelming fame, it’s about being at the right place in the right time) but she is just so average.
I’d thought she only underwent 5 months of training (or even less) when I see her perform (act, sing, dance), not to mention 5 years.

This article is months old I have no idea why people still comment on it.
But yeah, maybe she’s talentless. After years of training, her singing is nothing to shout about, her dancing is only slightly above average, her acting is good but nothing out of the ordinary and her talking skills are simple.
Some people just don’t have talent. Talent is something that comes naturally. When you’re ‘born’ to do something. Taeyeon; born to sing. Hyoyeon; born to dance.
Yoona doesn’t have something at which she excels at, but you’re missing the point here. She works fucking hard and she has a beautiful personality, and that’s why she’s loved.
I don’t see why both of you are pushing so hard about how Yoona is untalented and mediocre and all that crap…

wow, i’ve got to agree with you. Honestly, i like yuri more but to me, all 9 members are equally good. It’s amazing to see someone like you sort out internal issues within our fandom.
As an International fan of SNSD, Yoona had come to be one of my favorites. Initially it wasn’t for her looks, or her voice, or even her dancing. It was because of her determination. Like you said, in certain areas, she does lack confidence. But i dare anyone to say she isn’t Determined and dedicated to her work. Don’t get me wrong, I love all 9 girls, but they all have their own unique and special qualities, and Yoona’s seemed to appeal to me the most.
Even though she does not sing the best, Personally, i feel her voice has much more to it then how it sounds in a song. It radiates a nice feeling, something that i can hear and smile. She also has potential, look back to when they first debut, her voice has grown so much since then. From way back to “Into The New World” and “Girls’ Generation” to “Oh!” and “Run Devil Run”, I’d say she pretty much proved herself, she may not have the most lines, but you have to agree, her voice brings its own tribute.
When She dances, in my opinion, when i see it i don’t go “Wow she’s sexy” or “She’s so beautiful and elegant”. But, instead i think “Look at those moves, to actually see a person do that is incredible.” (Hyoyeon and Yuri are great too, i mean, have you SEEN them? Lol)
I’ll admit, her acting was kind of so-so to me at first, I looked at it and thought that maybe this wasn’t something for her. But as i continued to watch her Dramas, i realized that while she may not be the BEST, she is surely capable of holding her own in the acting world where others can’t.
I’m not trying to convince anybody here, im just saying that i understand how some people can look at her and think “she’s not that good”. But if you actually sit down and watch her, im sure you’ll see it too, she is a hard-worker and very dedicated and has more potential then you’ll see at just the first glance.

i’ll introduce myself as neither a k-pop fan nor a hardcore snsd fan (2 weeks old. =x). yoona (through YAMD) brought me into k-pop and snsd. i’m cool with the rest of the snsd members. they are all lovey. =)
I would like to add on something,
from some of the YAMD interviews (at least in 2 separate interviews) i’d watched, Yoona had always answered “please support YAMD, and SNSD” to questions like “what do you have to say to the viewers?”
I guess my love for her is not just based on a pretty face (she stands out at one glance, but well, there are numerous gorgeous babe around. =x not a justifiable reason to clinge on to her: at least for me), but her positive attitude and pride in being part of snsd, which makes her more “human” than a “ME ME ME” attention seeker. And i felt she tried her best to promote snsd, back in 2008 when snsd aint has the popularity it has now.
Personal opinion:
i’d watched a few clips of her in variety shows, i personally felt that she doesnt has the aura of “fighting too hard” for attention. She just displays a subtle sense of being there and enjoying the games, doing what’s needed and not overly seeking for attention. And she doesnt has the “must win” fighting spirit, e.g. hello baby project”, where she has once said that she’s contend with not being the worst off mum, and she’s cool with just being average.
well, she might not has the “funniest” character, nor aint interesting. but her positive attitude really emits an aura around which, makes me pro-yoona. =)

I don’t hate yonna. She can be the center of SNSD whatever entertainment company wants. I don’t quite care. I think she should just stick with singing, dancing and performing on the stage.
Honestly, I disagree with your opinion on her acting skills. I have seen “Cinderella Man” and “9 Ends 2 Outs”. She can’t act at all and unable to show the range of emotions or ability to portray the characters well. Her performance in 9 Ends 2 Outs makes me think she is a brat and a psycho but in fact, the character itself isn’t what it’s about.
In “Cinderella Man,” she failed in acting after acted in a few previous dramas and did worst that the second female lead. I even hope for the second female lead to end up with the main male lead (Is this crazy ?). I remembered there is a scene when the male lead confess his love to Yonna. She unable to return the natural emotion back to the male lead. Her face just looks blank with not emotion at all. I don’t get if she is surprise, or pity, or touch, or not-sure-what-to-do-next or afraid, after hearing the confession. That scene unable for me(as a viewer) to understand if she likes the male lead at all because all the scenes she spend with the male lead has not indication of her attachment with the male lead. I felt it’s just a small girl being around with an older brother, trying to look pitiful but unable to express the pitiful through her face and eyes. Go back and watch that scene again. It’s not normal for a real life girl who has spend so much time with the boy and fail to response to a confession from a boy. Think: If the main actress is played by Kim Su Ah or Choi Ji Woo, or other Real actresses, how will they response in such scene. That will be heaven and earth.
If you tell me she is talented, I felt that you Humiliate other Real talented actresses and those who can really act. I think you don’t know how to judge what good acting is. Try to observe real people on the streets to see enough what is natural response and emotions. Then, you will see what I mean by good acting.

a) don’t be so naive as to think ability is all that gets you to the top, commercial value is important and Yoona has it in buckets.
b) “we” don’t like Yoona? Stand for your own opinions, when you antis use inclusive language to make your opinion seem more important than it is, you look stupid, and weak, because as it turns out you’re a minority, no matter how significant you feel that you are.
c) you are a very angry, angry person. Please calm your fucking tits.
d) These scuffles between fans and antis seem massive but they are so insignificant on the larger scheme of things, so don’t get so worked up. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what either of us think, most people won’t give a fuck what I have to say and seriously, nobody gives a fuck what you have to say.

The following is something I posted on SSF, and I think it fits well with this (though not as detailed as Proctie’s OP). I struggled with the WHY and HOW of Yoona. I KNEW I liked her, more and more as the days went by, but I couldn’t put a finger on it. If SONES know the struggle that Tiffany went through to overcome the culture shock, then SONES need to appreciate what having an Yoona at the forefront does for SNSD. She’s gorgeously complex and at the same time utterly honest. If you can set down your prejudices for one minute and just look at the kid, she’ll break your heart with who she is. She is the spirit of SNSD, the core, she embodies the elan and joy of what SNSD is.
Just down the jaded glasses and LOOK at her, feel her emotion, her heart. I did, and now I can appreciate 1000 fold better the gestalt of nine.

I’ve wanted to express my opinion about Yoona for quite sometime, but it’s difficult. No matter how much I’ve been thinking about the ‘face’ of Soshi, she’s really tough to conceptualize. It’s like trying to read a forest and realizing I’m standing too close. Take a step back. Another, another, another. No matter how far back I step, I still can’t see all of her.
I do know that Yoona is as close to the complete package as exists in idolhood.
But no matter how much I’ve studied her, for me Yoona is still very much a mystery. I know her members know the real her, because she’s loved so much within the group, but she’s either REALLY good at hiding the real Yoona, or we’re seeing the real Yoona every time the cameras roll. She either hides everything or nothing. I have to believe it’s the latter. She’s probably the most photographed and filmed member, but the dumbfounding thing about her is that no matter how much we’ve seen of her to date, I think we’ve only scratched the surface. This girl is deep.
So many idols cultivate one facet, one view that they present to the public, but Yoona is a constantly moving target. She’s a CF model, an actress, a dancer, a dongsaeng, an unnie, a student, an utter beauty, sexy or goofy, a total prankster, awkward and graceful, naturally thin, but with an incredible s-line (the result of endless hard work in a gym, you can be sure), delicate and strong, playful, moody, angel and brat, self-aware, self-deprecating, prideful, humble, quiet and loud. She’s killer in the signature Soshi tight jeans. She rivals Yuri in that respect. She can laugh with her whole body like Sunny, and then shut it off by main will alone and do the job.
And about that job. She’s dead serious about work. Professional enough to humble most professionals. She’s a girl who’s never dated, but can pull off acting like a married woman. Get this. She practiced her emotions by recording herself making faces in the mirror. What does that say about her skill and natural talent? Simply mind blowing? Yeah. I’ll go with that. When she was filming her daily drama, she worked incredible hours, went to highschool, and did the Soshi schedule. Yes, SM cut her a lot of slack when there were conflicts, but that just meant there was rarely a free moment in her life. The others knew that, and while the impulse for jealousy might be a natural reaction considering her success, knowing what she was going through, I seriously doubt any of them envied her the sheer amount of work it required. The award for best newcomer? Icing. Sheer icing.
Another thing I can’t get a handle on is her beauty. Without a doubt, she is. But HOW? Really, eggs and foreheads don’t have anything to do with this. It’s all internal. Many people who are used to being photographed know they have certain angles that appeal more than others. That’s why you only see one angle in numerous photographs, because the person being photographed is trying to present their best side. They’ve studied themselves.
Yoona doesn’t do this. Browse the interwebs. The pictures of her are left facing, right facing, chin up, chin down, straight on. Endless variety. She’s one of those people that can be beautiful from almost any angle, and at the SAME time, not be. It’s like she has a beauty switch she can throw on and off at will. IF she wants, she’s heartbreakingly beautiful. If she doesn’t she can be plain, or just plain odd. It’s not a matter of camera angles, hair styles, make up, or any of the typical methods idols use. She IS or ISN’T depending on what she wants to show.
Watch any Soshi video, and if Yoona is present, she’s usually front and center. I thought for a long time about why that is. She isn’t like Jessica or Yuri with their cool or hot in-your-face sex appeal. Sorry, she’s not. But there is something there. Is it her doe eyes with their soft and innocent appeal? Perhaps. But contrast that with her mouth. She’s got a way of holding her mouth, slightly crooked, which is more evident when she smiles or laughs. And her laugh is genuine in that it’s utterly hers, not designed but natural. There’s nothing ladylike about it and falls outside of the classic definition of beauty. Alligator. That’s Yoona. No, the reason I think she’s the center of any Soshi formation is because she’s at that crux, between girl and woman. She’s innocent and alluring, non-threatening, promising but never a temptress. She embodies that perfectly. That’s WHO she is.
Maybe that’s my issue. I’m comfortable when I can classify things. This belongs here, that belongs there. Yoona belongs everywhere. She’s comfortable anywhere, in any crowd. She’s the ideal type for a lot of celebrities, but nothing is overwhelming for her. She has no spazz button, no thing or person that causes her to lose herself. It’s always self-possession. A centeredness that is way beyond her years.
Without a doubt she is treasured by her members, no matter how she’s always picked out as the ‘face’ of Soshi. And the pressure of always being under the gun? Always a camera pointing at her? It doesn’t faze her. She just shines and lets us see who she is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her embarrassed. Frankly, at this point, I have to believe that nothing is beyond her strength or depth.

Wow, I don’t think my post is immature but simply stating the facts from what I have observed from her drama works so far. She isn’t those who are born as talented actress like those who I have respect for their acting skills. These people just get it after several drama series. So far, her acting still unsatisfactory after several chances (Who are so lucky to have such chances). Her acting skills Will improve in the future but through lots of hardwork, guidance and some more dramas that she will be involved in. However, I do respect her other abilities, just not acting.
There is neither hatred nor admire from me to Yoona because I’m aware what “Bias love” means. All fans have that bias love toward their idols and their idols will always be perfect forever. So, they are unable to observe anything with their clear mind. Everything they see on their idols are always so good looking, innocent, smart. talented, and so on. However, do these fans really know the real personalities of these idols ? NO, they don’t know their real self yet they blindly admired them because they are just pretty/handsome and just so perfect, but why these fans feels the need to look for their news to feed themselves as if they are obsessed aka addicted to them ? Isn’t there is something wrong about it? Have anyone realize how empty their life are ? So, by being aware of this “Bias Love,” I see these entertainers are just Entertaining us and No such thing as being blindly crazy of them. If they fail to do their job properly, then they should be criticized. Simply as that.
Sorry that you are hurt by not praising your precious idol. Everyone has his/her own reasons but I think my reason is logical.

I’m not some obsessing fan by any means, but this is what I have to say for haters of any idol. You can say you hate her dancing. You can say you hate her acting. You can say you hate the way she looks or how she sings. But how many of you actually no her personally? ….. Probably none so SHUT UP. You have no right to say you hate a person unless you actually had the chance to talk to them. How would you feel if someone you didn’t even know started posting crap about how you suck or how they hated you? Either you’d feel pissed, really hurt, or don’t care. Either way I highly doubt you would enjoy it. You like someone else and don’t like her fine! That’s your own goddamn opinion, but don’t question those who do because I’m sure someone is thinking the same thing about the one you like. I usually don’t read, I hate reading but this article was everything in my mind! And honestly people who are saying how Yoona doesn’t want to participate in the song “Dear Mom” c’mon seriously? Like do you even know what her past was like her mom left her when she was a baby! But thank god she was left with 8 sister who cared about her! I’m really proud of her, she’s been through so much that you can’t even imagine and i’m not saying just Yoona, Tiffany as well she lost her mom due to cancer and other members can’t see their parents everyday! It’s not bad to write out your opinion about each member but seriously think before you say something! Yoona cried so much because of anti-yoona! i am a sone. i do have biases, but i love all of snsd. i like the members more then i like other groups. yoona isnt my bias, i just chose two that i prefered, and the rest i like equally. of course when i see the members that arent my bias i get very happy becuase i genuinely like the other members(of couse i don’t know them personally.), and not just becuase i have two biases in snsd. (some people do that.) i don’t think yoona is the prettiest one because i think EVERYONE in snsd is equally pretty, since everyone has a certain style or image in their looks. for example yoona may seem more feminine and fresh then yuri, yuri has a sexier and more mature image then yoona. ^_^ its just a matter of taste, or what appeals to each person. thats why snsd has 9. all the members makeup for what the other members don’t have. 😀 thats how a group works.

i love them all… and i know i always bias on sooyoung and taeyeon… but i love them all…
Considering there seems to be a lot of Yoona hate from the International community, I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents as a 26 year-old white male from America (the Midwest area of the United States). This is mainly an answer to the haters claim that Yoona isn’t beautiful, etc. Yoona is just about the perfect combination of cute and sexy that I can imagine. She’s got that adorable innocence about her, yet at the same time manages to exude just the right amount of alluring sexuality. Many men find this quality lethally attractive in a woman. A cute and goofy girl will make a man smile and endear him. A sexy temptress will make him want to end the small talk and take her to his bed. However, a woman who can at once capture his heart with her girlish innocence and vulnerability, and at the same time make his blood boil with lust from her womanly sexuality, she will intoxicate him… Yoona is this type of girl. I know this is merely my personal (and male-centric) take on Yoona’s attractiveness, but I do feel that this may explain why some (many?) men find Yoona so appealing.
