Dunno if I should have written about this…but I really wanted to. And seeing as her birthday is coming soon, why not?
As much as you want to talk about ‘the power of nine’ or ‘nothing but 9’, it’s terribly obvious that the SNSD fandom is split into pretty much 9 mini-fandoms. If you are someone who really loves all nine, then hats off to you and kudos, but the larger part of the SNSD-fandom will of course have their biases and what have you.
This is perfectly fine of course. Under the umbrella of ‘SNSD fandom’, the 9 mini-fandoms all have their individual qualities. For instance, the SeoMates all seem to have developed parental attitudes and all act like they’re watching their daughter grow up, GorJess Spazzers are almost like cultists for their goddess, and you won’t find people more anything-goes and fun-loving as a HyoHunnie. You catch my drift?
The problem is when there are anti-fans within the fandom. Like…what is that? Having a bias is one thing, but when you like one girl and actually hate another, don’t even call yourself a S♡NE.
So far, what I’ve noticed is that the member that cops the most criticism and the like from ‘fans’ these days is Yoong. Mostly, it’s generated from jealousy. “Why does Yoona always get to be in the centre?”, “Yoona’s so overrated.”, “Why Yoona when x-member is so much prettier?”.
Comments like this hurt. I don’t even have a Yoona-bias, but seeing comments like that seriously gut me.
This kind of thing is really only present in newer fans, or just those kids who can’t open their eyes. From some of the comments I’ve seen on this site, some of our readers seem to have some negative sentiments toward Yoona. It’s fine with older fans…as most of you know – you end up growing to appreciate all the girls.
But I’m going to take it upon myself to educate those anti-Yoona ‘fans’ out there. Some people might think it’s unnecessary and I’m making a big deal out of nothing and that we shouldn’t pay attention to antis, but sorry, it’s just my personality to want to correct someone when they’re….wrong.
One: Why is Yoona always in the centre?
- Every group has the ‘centre’ member. In this case, it’s Yoona. Right from the start, Yoona was going to be the ‘poster girl’ of SNSD. Even when SNSD hadn’t been fully formed yet. She had the innocent look that SM wanted the group to have, she had appeal, and she’d already done enough work in the entertainment industry for people to recognize her, having been in CFs, magazines and music videos. The reaction to Yoona from the beginning was positive so SM decided to keep putting her in the centre, and the centre-Yoong thing just stuck. You have to understand that Yoona didn’t ask to be put there though. Whatever SM says, goes. She never actively searched for popularity or attention, she just sort of sat there and accepted the fact that she was popular and ‘the face’, as did the other members. ‘Centre-Yoong’, ‘…you are the face of SNSD!’, words from leader Taeng’s own mouth.
- Besides, SNSD wouldn’t have the popularity it has today without Yoona. All the members helped but she really gave SNSD the leg-up they needed in the beginning. International fans might not see how much Yoona affected SNSD’s exposure as we actually have to use the internet to watch Korean dramas, but imagine flicking on the television and seeing Yoona on it almost every day in dramas and CFs and tell me something like that wouldn’t affect SNSD’s popularity.
Two: Yoona’s overrated.
Is she really? Let’s cut this one into subsections.
- Yoona isn’t that pretty.
When people say Yoona is beautiful, there are people who go “She’s not THAT pretty”. I think they fail to realise that Yoona’s fans (real fans) aren’t saying that she’s stunningly drop dead gorgeous like a model something, they’re talking about Yoona’s innate and natural brightness and innocent feel that makes her even prettier than that.(Beauty is subjective. That’s my personal opinion pfft.)
- Yoona isn’t that talented.
Yoona’s forte is acting, and after that it’s dance. As someone who has actually seen You Are My Destiny, Cinderella Man, 9 Ends 2 Outs, etc., I’m going to tell you she is talented. Sure, she’s not the best actress and she can be awkward at times, but the girl has potential. Did you know she pretty much filmed 170+ episodes of YAMD on 2-3 hours of sleep most nights, and she would practice by talking to herself whenever she got a break? Did you know that she learnt how to do different expressions by recording herself making faces in a mirror? Keep this in mind, and go watch the first episode of Cinderella Man or something. Yoona’s first appearance in the show will probably surprise you, I know I was shocked. Like I said, dance comes next. She doesn’t have the power or technique Hyoyeon has, she doesn’t have the fluidity or stage presence that Yuri has, she doesn’t have the charisma that Sooyoung has and she doesn’t have the elegance that Seohyun has. But she’s not a main dancer for nothing. Her moves are clean, sharp, on the beat, she never misses a move and she delivers them well. Plus, she’s picked up popping recently which impressed me really. Of course, acting and dancing aside, many people will argue that Yoona can’t sing. Leading me to another point.
- Yoona can’t sing.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you Yoona’s a great singer. We both know that’s not true. She gets the easiest lines in many of SNSD’s songs so I can’t really tell you the limits of her ability either. But from what I’ve seen, she can sing. Not fantastically, but she’s certainly not tone deaf or anything like that. Kim Jungeun’s Chocolate, MTV Girls On Top…I guess it was enough for little old me to think “Ah…so she can sing”, even if she’s the weakest singer out of the nine. What Yoona lacks is confidence. When she’s singing pop songs and dancing, she does fine, but have you heard this girl sing a ballad? She sounds downright terrified. Her voice trembles and her expression looks like she’s singing before a blood-thirsty mob or something. I feel bad seeing it really. But my respect level for her went way up when she actually sang at SNSD’s Concert. Many people complained about how her performance was boring and how her singing was ‘blah’. That’s not how I saw it though. I thought to myself, this girl who has so little confidence in her singing voice is actually doing a singing performance? I was impressed. Even if her performance wasn’t anything special, she chose to sing even when she could have chosen to do a more dance-oriented performance like Hyoyeon or Yuri. It was like she was telling us she was willing to sing or something. I was proud of her at least. I know many of us fans are hoping she continues to work hard and improve in the future.
3: Why Yoona when x-member could do it better?
- Why does Yoona get to be in that CF when this member is prettier? Why is Yoona the star of the Cabi MV when that member is sexier? Why does this magazine shoot have Yoona when the other member is better at modeling? Nothing much to say here other than what the company wants, the company gets. The mentality of disliking Yoona because she’s super popular…doesn’t really exist in Korea. It’s an international thing. We have a different way of thinking you see. In Korea, Yoona’s super popular, and being super popular, companies like Samsung or Innisfree will want her as a model, and as long as they’re paying good money and SM agrees to it, Yoona is going to be their model whether she wants to be or not. It’s not like Yoona wants the attention to herself. Wasn’t it Yoona that said that Hyoyeon should be invited onto a variety show? Wasn’t it Yoona who said that Tiffany always works really hard and takes pride in her job? If that’s not promoting the other members I don’t know what is. Please realise that while SNSD members will say that SM is a really nice place because their company wants them to make them look good, SM doesn’t give SNSD any control. The members don’t have control over what positions or jobs they get. Wanting your own favourite member to get exposure is fine. Like, there’s no problem with a comment like “Oh, another Yoona CF. I wish Hyoyeon would get a CF…”. That’s fine. But comments like “That b**ch yonna again wtf she should f**k of let soo do it shes better at it”…I’m seriously going to get angry. =_=
I’m not sure if I covered everything I wanted to say…Sorry about the wall of text by the way. But please, if you have something you want to say about Yoona, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll gladly hear you out.
I’m not asking you to love Yoona. I’m not even asking you to like Yoona. What I’m asking is that you give her a chance. She really is a great girl. ^^
The longer you are in the SNSD-fandom, the more you’ll come to realise that the soshi-bond and appreciating all nine pieces of the jigsaw puzzle is the most important thing.

Sometimes I see comments on youtube that say bad things about her like “Yoona is too overrated” and such. I do feel bad for her. She can’t choose whether she does or not. I also remember that the other girls said that they were proud of Yoona because they gained a lot of attention when Yoona starred in the drama YAMD. They would boast around that Yoona is a member of SNSD, a member of a 9-girls-group. She has even already been popular before she got into SNSD. People need to think twice about what they say..honestly

Thank you. My goodness, THANK YOU. I’ll admit I have my member biases but when it comes down to it, I do love all 9 (just not as much as another one or whatever :P) But really, if you’re gonna hate on one, don’t call yourself a fan. Get off the snsd fan site or forums that you’re on..and just spaz somewhere else that’s focused on your love. We don’t need the hate.
As if this girl hasn’t work her ass off to get where she is, she doesn’t need people sittin’ back here and b*tching about how much attention she gets.
Sit back, close your eyes, and just think. Think about Yoona out of the group. That’s not nine, that’s eight..and that’s wrong.

totally agreed with this… i’m not really a yoona addict.. but i really hate when people always put the blame on her.. like why is she is always at the center? why she got a lot of CF’s.. why does she is always on variety shows or drama?
i really think it is unfair to her side when so called “SONES” bashed her because she is always the center of attention… every group has that… it’s not her fault that almost everybody likes her…

With being the most popular member Yoona is bound to get a lot more haters. Two sides of a coin, at least some of us can be happy and know that since so many ppl seem to hate her, only an equal or GREATER amount of ppl love her. Why else would other companies want to use her image so much? it’s not like samsung asked “hey throw us an SNSD girl for our product” SME: “SURE, YOU CAN HAVE YOONA”, no what happened was that samsung says “give us yoona, we want yoona” and SME says “make an offer” Yoona is indeed the image of SNSD (or the first one that comes to mind) and it’s only natural that she is because she has the most experience of putting her own image and face out there than the other girls. I mean…one episode of Star GOlden Bell had the MC’s ASKING yoona to take “snapshot expressions” and that girl does it so friggin well….where the other members have talent in singing and dancing, this girl goes beyond that spectrum and covers a much broader area int he entertainment industry, which is why she’s earned the rank of “image of snsd”
Yoona deserves all the love she gets and haters won’t truly understand unless they’ve seen Yoona’s Biography, every series, every CF, every friggin project, which they won’t, but yoona doesn’t need them, she already has so many that love her which rocketed her to infamy already.
Yea seriously I don’t understand what’s wrong with all these people’s thinking. Yoona might be the centre, but as you said, it’s not like she could choose not to. I think we all can see that actually she herself, doesn’t like the title as ‘the face of SNSD’ too, but what can she do? It’s the company’s decision. Besides, her members don’t even say anything about this, they simply adore her for this, so why are we fans even applicable to say anything? Just makes me baffle when I see so called ‘fans’ bash Yoona.

Yoona is my fav, but I would never dis on the others….. I thought her song in the concert was fun and entertaining, I’d love to see/hear her sing more as well as Sunny and Hyoyeon.
Yah, Most of the new fans of SNSD are all like that, they doesn’t know what’s was the personality of each member and how they are like in real and they just judge them through the first impression. This is very bias as they doesn’t know them best at all. They need to find out more about them before making a comment about each member. I still remember i love yoona best when she is in the gee promotion, and it shows alot of her scene. Totally love it. The best thing is Yoona’s birthday is coming soon !!! Lets all celebrate together. All must show love to all members, and let’s not comment about who or who is better. ❤ SNSD ~ Fighting !
i agree with you. i’m definitely not yoona biased, but i would never say terrible things about her. i wouldn’t like it if someone said negative things about taeyeon, so i wouldn’t dare do it to any of the other members, even if they aren’t my faves.

Well said Proctie. Real S-ONES love all 9. Sure we might love one more than the other but we know that SNSD isnt complete without all 9. That includes Yoona. As far as I concern, she is a valuable member of the group and does a great job as the centre. Yes others can fill her position but there might be some reason why she is there. Since it is the master of marketing SM that decides that, then you should know that it is a credible decision. Each members have their own unique role to play and all of them are doing great together. Live with it.

I think this summed up my recent thoughts, one of the best read articles so far.
Yoong deserves more international appreciation than she gets, it’s a common herd mentality to think that she’s an overrated member and in SNSD, there are those that outshine others. What the public needs to understand that even the girls are aware of their places in the group, and they’re fine with that. They’ve grown to support and love each other no matter how much the attention, and that patience eventually comes back to them because look where the 9 are now, everyone’s slowly getting individual recognition and no doubt, there’ll be more chances in future. While it may see that Yoong might be getting more exposure than the others, I think it’s come to the point where it just doesn’t matter to them anymore. If they could have it their way, every girl would get equal amounts of jobs but that’s just not the way it works. I see it as remarkable that as compared to during their debut days, all 9 have now established themselves as individuals now. Just wait, if SM makes wiser choices and if the girls are given more opportunities, everyone of them will find their own kind of recognition.
I think what’s been more remarkable is the fact that as the girls said, Yoong has never been more humble even with the crazy amount of attention she’s been getting for the past 3 years. It’s so easy to be a little more cocky and arrogant but she’s still the little dork we knew back then. I think that counts for something and it’s that understanding among the 9 that keeps the bond growing stronger. And I hope to see them look to each other for support and growing not only as individuals but as SNSD as well.

I for one am saying that, because she is.
If people want to say “In my opinion she’s not that pretty” then fine, everyone’s entitled to an opinion. If people say “She’s not that pretty” matter-of-factly, then they’re wrong. You don’t get to be the image, the centre of SNSD if you’re not pretty. You don’t get to be nominated as the ideal girl for literally dozens of male celebrities if you’re not pretty. You don’t get to do oh-so-many CFs and be the face of advertising campaigns for skin creams, water parks and god knows how many other things if you’re not pretty.
She’s gorgeous and there’s nothing else to it.

Coming from a guy who rates her as his third closest of the SNSD would seem to me an affirmation of how great or a good person YoonA is, and that indeed she is a beautiful person inside and out.
As an artist, she knows her strengths and weaknesses. She’s honest enough to admit these and her other flaws. Despite the adoration and compliments received she has maintained her selflessness, and never once shown taints of arrogance, but on the contrary manifested on certain occasions her vulnerableness, shyness and lack of confidence.
Most laudable is the fact that YoonA did not allow herself to be confined within the proscription of what an “IDOL” is. She went out of the box by being true to herself. And what is she really?
A true blue SONE or a YoonAddict would know that as hard as people label her as the pretty girl next door type, or the goody two shoes gal, she is more than just that.
– she is the axe girl [FO2 Staff and Crew]
– she is HIM Choding [SNSD]
– she is SNSD can opener
– she is a weirdo [Kyunhyun]
– she is SNSD’s best GO-STOP player
– and more…the list is never ending.
In sum, she’s not afraid to deglamorized herself for the sake of entertainment, watch FO2 and you’ll know what i mean.
This is how i see her, and these are just few of the many reasons why i love and adore her.

Dear just remember you can’t please everyone. I guess those “haters” are just saying that SM ENTERTAINMENT should at least give the other girls the chance to shine. And publicity in any kind, good or bad, is always publicity. All these “lets-all-hate-that-overrated-plain-jane” movements are really working for them (and Yoona). In fact, looks like Yoona is getting all the attention unintentionally the more people bash her and in the process showers a little rain of attention to the group, too. So, I think it’s okay! 🙂 And one more thing, yeah, Yoona isn’t the prettiest of them all but her girl-next-door/very innocent look seems to be a total crowd pleaser. So let’s just stop stressing ourselves over this matter. 🙂

Hats off to you! You have completely hit the nail on the head. Another example is that I recently re-watched a variety singing show called “Good Song” and in the beginning Yoona is present however once the singing begins she disappears and is never seen again for the whole episode.
How would she feel? Terrible? I’m pretty sure our dear Yoona is aware of her singing capabilities, just like Goo Hara who is also the weakest singer of Kara.
They never claim to be great singers, however on talk shows and interviews when they get asked to sing, they do it anyway. That takes courage, the moment you open your mouth to sing within THE MUSIC INDUSTRY and you’re not that good…you’re bound to get criticized and the haters will start talking. BUT SHE SINGS ANYWAY so good on her!
Yoona saranghe and great write up, although quite a serious post for such a celebratory occasion i think it was a very necessary and enjoyable read.

Its true can you says you are a true fan of snsd if you only like some members and hate at least one.
Its true that i like some members more then others but i really like all of them, to tell the truth i didnt know there were sones that felt that way, i thought we all loved all the girls, i mean how can you not? All of them are great in theyre one aways, i guess that some fans just worship some members too much and think its wrong for the other members to get more exposure then the member that they love, if the member they worshiped found out about it i think she would be sad cuz the girls support each other.

Even though I sometimes prefer other members to be in the middle i don’t mind her in the middle either…her smile is so bright and happy it just makes you want to smile.
Plus Yoona unnie is so humble and she always helps to promote the other members. Oh AND i can’t help but love her laugh its soo kid-like and she’s always being herself. She doesn’t try to act like another person when in front of the camera..she’s just simply herself as are all the other members.

I completely agree!! First, I love Yoona and I am an international fan (not even Korean). Is it true that most of these antis are international fans?? While I am sure some are, I have been wondering about this for awhile because I get the impression that Koreans are more critical of their celebrities than the international fans.
Most importantly, Yoona is a human being. She is someone’s daughter and someone’s sister. I don’t understand how anyone can say such hateful things and not realize that they probably wouldn’t want that to happen to their own family members. I also feel that Yoona is loved by the people around her and must be a lovely person. She has accomplished so much for her age and has worked so hard. It is annoying to see anyone diminish her accomplishments.
It is true that it is more International fans. In Korea, Yoona is like just ‘very popular’ like Taeyeon is also ‘very popular’, for example. But some fans from other countries tend to feel that Yoona must be arrogant because she promotes SNSD so much and that she receives so much love from Korea. I was going to go on with a list about why you were right, but then I realized it would mostly be restating what you already said, plus something that anti-SNSD groups have started me thinking about.
The only excuse I can see for someone to be an anti-fan, either of a member within SNSD or of some other idol group, is if there was an actual conflict between that member/group and the rest of their favorite group… Which clearly doesn’t give Yoona’s anti-fans any ground to stand on. Then again, I suppose it’s unrealistic to expect all of the various fan groups to really pay as much attention to these things as they should before making their comments.
Which makes me think, I’ve seen people angry at SNSD for the actions of some of their fans. I… can’t properly articulate why this is one of the dumbest things for someone to think. The only way I can even kind of justify it is if, under some delusion, the holder of such a view imagined some bizarre orchestration that left SNSD legitimately blameworthy… and I sincerely doubt that any idol has the time to set that sort of thing up.
(And since you mentioned it, like a few of the earlier posters I’ll claim to be a fan of all the girls, even if I have a particularly soft spot for Yuri and SooYoung)

Hi! Um wat! To answer you, in terms of the biggest fanbase, Yoona comes second. In Korea, it’s first Taeyeon, then Yoona, then Tiffany, then Jessica, then Yuri, etc. But in terms of advertising a product, Yoona is a favorite of companies because she can increase their sells really well~ Plus she is the CF Queen~ Also must male celebrities chose Yoona as their ideal woman…that’s what the author meant.
But all nine are now so very well known that they all have their own places in the entertainement business~~ I, for one love all 9 nine members…even though I have my biais *coughTaeyeon*coughYoona*!!!!

Thank God someone wrote this. I was getting fed up of ‘fans’ bashing on Yoona for no reason other than that they don’t want to her and want only their favorite member to shine! That is NOT being a SONE!
If not for her popularity in the drama ‘You are my Destiny’, she wouldn’t have gotten even more popular when they started promoting ‘Gee’. And if not for those recognitions from the people that loved the drama and the TV stations that put the camera on her a lot, SNSD wouldn’t have been as popular as a whole. I know I wouldn’t have fallen in love with this actress and then with SNSD. You always have to look at the big picture. Look now: SNSD is everywhere, from CFs, to music, to radio, to shows, to variety, to musicals! and I mean it’s not like SNSD is given small roles–>they are always the main in the shows, variety, CFs, etc.
so I’d like to actually thank Yoona for helping make SNSD so popular (all nine helped, but she definetely did a great part) as they are now!!

2. I actually think Yoona does better on ballads, check out Dear Mom or some Complete or Forever fancams. I was surprised to see she can pull off a vibrato.
I’ve always been of the opinion that Yoona and Sooyoung are the best dancers after Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sunny mess up the most and Seohyun has that Uee like expression. Taeyeon and Jessica can be great but don’t always go 100%. Tiffany is Tiffany, she has to work harder than everyone to get to adequate. 😛
3. Well said. A lot of people either don’t understand this or choose to ignore so they can vent. Advertisers and PDs choose who they want. If anything blame market research and focus groups. SM would love for everyone to have a bunch of side jobs, hell they even turn down a crap load of offers for Taeyeon and Yoona. Remember SM didn’t even want Yoona to do FO2 and reportedly turned down 3 or 4 drama offers already this year. Taeyeon could easily be one of the biggest solo artists in Kpop with her popularity and gets offers to do OST songs for pretty much every drama that comes out. SM just chooses to hold back on a lot of that stuff.
In most cases the others get MORE opportunities because of the leverage having members with explosive popularity and marketability gives SM. They can say “you can have Yoona for this or that but only if so and so is also there”
One thing I would like to see is Yoona do a drama where the character is closer to her own age. The Cinderella Man part was last minute and meant for a much older actress originally. I kinda felt sorry for her because it was a no win situation. Of course it’s gonna be somewhat awkward when her love interest is 12 years older than her in real life and they are going after her (happened in YAMD too with Park JJ being 11 years older).
Watch her scenes with Lee Ji-hoon or the guy in 9 End 2 Outs where she was actually after the guy, it was very very good. But SM really sucks at securing and picking drama roles.

Hyoyeon has a Cyworld account that is restricted to friends only, Jessica has a Me2Day that she has not updated in some time and Yuri used to have a blog that she ended up closing down.

For those that don’t know the story behind the first picture…there is a youtube video where the people on the Soshified forums sent presents to SNSD that included the kiddy pool and pajamas. 8 SNSD members took pictures of themselves in the pajamas and pool, but Yoona missed out because she was busy somewhere (filming probably). She arrived late and was disappointed she missed out on all the fun – I think Yuri snapped the picture. Might have some of my facts off, it’s been a while since i watched the video.

Yoona is pretty I completely agree but she is not that talented to be compared with other members. Among all 9 girls, she is least talented I can say. She is where she is now because of SM only, they have the most power to bring someone up or to make someone go down. Fortunately, Yoona was fixed as ‘group’s image’ so with her only pretty face without outstanding talent, she still can shine because all SM’s helps.
I don’t get why she got the 1st place for 90-ers who has potential to go far. How can people think this girl can go far without any talent in her hands? If one day SM stop promoting her, stop putting her in the middle…she will have nothing. And I’ve noticed lately SM change the position when the girls do an interview, originally it’s Yoona who was standing in the middle but they just changed it like make her switch the position with other members. It seems SM is planning to change group center/image because if you notice the girls always give Maknae Seohyun a chance to speak more lately and SM seem heavily promoting Seohyun with WGM, Clean & Clear, go one show more, sing important line, featuring with other artists, etc. and I think after they come back from Japan promotion, Seohyun will get to starring in some drama too (she received tons of love calls after married) SM know people will get tired with Yoona soon cause they see her face everywhere and every product for years. Even it’s SNSD’s CFs but some of them still put Yoona as a main model or only use Yoona pic for publicity.
Her acting is ok or should I use the word ‘plain’? She knows how to act but doesn’t know how to do better. I watched some of YAMD ep. and the part when she’s married but she still act cute wth, she dressed in Hanbok but did expression like i’m 15 years old girl. Even in CM, there is some kind of expression that I always see from her face and it’s really annoyed me. And it’s the fact that the ratings sucks because of Yoona, even she herself admitted on YSMM and Intimate note that her acting is bad. So, please stop saying like she is great actress out of girls. IF SM give what they always give to Yoona to other girls instead, i’m sure ALL of them can do it too and even can do it better than her.
Did you see the dance break in DC few days ago? where they put Seohyun and Sooyoung to dance after Hyoyeon (it’s Yoona/Yuri position usually) did you see that they did a great job? Actually the top 5 dancers in SNSD is Hyoyeon,Yuri,Sooyoung,Seohyun,Yoona BUT since Yoona still being group’s face, so they have to put her in the top 3, just to make it like she is well-rounded talent member.. can sing.. act.. dance.. model.. 4 in 1 LOL Yeah, she can do it all BUT nothing outstanding or special either. So, I don’t call that she is talented girl like other members… no potential I see in her also.
You read comments of Cabi MV? Most of people praised Yuri’s body and her hotness and all, and some of them also think that Yuri should lead MV instead Yoona…. What you see from MV? As I said, Yoona’s acting is just plain… look at how she runs… how she pouts… that’s so unnatural. And what? trying to be sexy by that smirk along with grinding with Taecyeon. she might have the most experience out of group but that doesn’t mean she can do the best job, if Company/PDs don’t give other members a chance how they know Yuri/Seohyun can’t act better than Yoona? I also believe Yoona can tell SM directly if she thinks other members match the lead role than her. BUT she didn’t because it’s lead role and will get most screentime.. attention that she always wants.
“Overrated” is the only word that can describe “Im Yoona” well. There are TWO members who always get a lots of jobs/offers, it’s Taeyeon and Yoona. BUT I see no one ever use this word to Taeyeon because people realized she has real talents and ‘she’s leader’ so everything she got it’s mostly like she deserves it but for Yoona…. SNSD is popular because of her? Are you joking? If you say that YAMD made people know SNSD more so how about Taeyeon and her famous OST.? How about Taeng DJ? How you know SNSD is SNSD now mostly because of talentless Yoona?
Yes, without 9 is not SNSD but IF only 8 without Yoona, SNSD won’t get any effect either, just like when they perform when Yoona was busily filming her own dramas. Without Yoona you can’t really see the different, her little lines in all SNSD songs can easily transfer to other members. And if group being active without center/image, ALL of them will get equally amount of screentime, and you won’t see the word like “overrated” or “why the cameras always focus on xxx member” or “why this xxx member always in the middle” anymore.
SM doesn’t have the power to make someone go up or down. They train the kids, they debut the kids, they promote the kids but after that it’s up to them. If SM has so much power, tell me why CSJH was so unpopular. Tell me why S.E.S, SM’s former top girl group, pretty much evaporated after trying to debut in Japan. Tell me why f(x) has yet to win any k-charts or mutizens. Tell me where Ayumi is right now. Tell me why for like an entire year, SNSD was a bottom-of-the-barrel group who everyone expected to disband. Tell me why DBSK had to struggle for years in Japan before getting popular. Tell me why it took Super Junior like 3-4 years before people started to think such a large group was a good idea.
You really think Yoona only gets love because she’s in the center? Then why is Tiffany, who’s in the back for many dance routines, so loved and the owner of what people call a national-treasure eye-smile? You don’t even understand how much the Korean public loved Yoona after she was in YAMD. Please, ‘she will have nothing’? That statement makes me laugh. How about the support of about 300000 fans, and the entire korean public?
SM doesn’t choose the seating for interviews. From the beginning it was the older members Taeyeon-Jessica-Sunny-Tiffany at the front with Yuri-Sooyoung-Yoona-Seohyun at the back with Hyoyeon changing between the two depending on if the arrangement was 4-5 or 5-4. The set-out changes depending on who the interviewer intends to talk to the most. No point putting Seohyun at the back if Newsen wants to spend the whole time asking her about Yonghwa.
Which brings me to Seohyun being promoted more. Uh…you don’t want Seohyun to be promoted more or something? Even SM knows SNSD is a 9 member group. why would they only promote Yoona? Although, Yoona still receives heavy promotion. FO2, Innisfree…she even got the S-OIL CF recently which is a really huge deal you know. Petrol is usually reserved for big respected celebrities so it’s really something for an idol to get a CF. Seohyun probably gets offers for alot of things yeah, but so does Yoona. This year, SM has already turned down 3-4 drama offers for Yoona because they have other plans. And no, people won’t get tired of Yoona. This is also something that only really happens in the international side of things. Demand for Yoona in korea is high, trust me. And probably will be until the day SNSD wraps up activities.
Who knows if the other members could act better than Yoona. I dunno, maybe they could, you’re missing the point though. Yoona has the most acting experience under her belt, of course more people will want her for dramas rather than some singer-idol who’s never done acting before. You watched a few YAMD episodes? You really think you can judge her by that? Lol. Watch all 170+ then come back and tell me how you think her acting is. And Cinderella Man’s poor ratings can’t be attributed to Yoona. As someone else commented, it was a last minute decision by SM and she had no time to prepare for the role. The fact that Yoona says that she didn’t do well, it just proves how humble and modest she is. You’ve probably never seen C.M. so I guess I should tell you that her acting is great in it. Annoying expression? She’s an actress…she’s got like 50 million expressions you douche.
Yes, the dance-line of SNSD is Hyoyeon-Yuri-Yoona-Sooyoung-Seohyun. In that order too. It’s been like that since the start. ITNW, Yuri and Yoona are Hyoyeon’s back up while Sooyoung and Seohyun were added later due to their ability. She is a well rounded member. She can act, dance, model, sing to an extent. Isn’t that better than someone who can act really well but can’t dance at all? Or someone who can dance but has zero acting or modeling ability? Being well-rounded is what makes an idol valuable. It is one of the reasons SNSD is so successful. No potential? Haha…XD
Watch her awkward acting in the very first episode of YAMD, then the emotional downpour in the last few. Watch Yoona’s basic dance from her audition tape or her dance routines that were used in MTV or her performance in ITNW, then compare it to her popping and waves that she can do now, the girl even flexes while dancing. Potential is ability to grow, so either the Yoona we have now is an impostor who replaced the initial Yoona a year ago or something or you’re just blind.
Cabi MV…lol. Okay, you so didn’t read the post. So what if Yuri has a hotter body? I’ll even agree with you. Yul is smokin’ hots. But Samsung who owns Caribbean Bay asked for Yoona. They payed for Yoona to be the centre. They demanded Yoona to be in the centre. And being a company that relies on Samsung’s endorsements, as if SM will say no. Haha, you still seem to think that the girls have a say in what they do. If so, Taeyeon wouldn’t have left ChinChin and Sunny n Yuri wouldn’t have left IY. Sooyoung and Tiffany would probably be doing more jobs as they seem unsatisfied, and Hyoyeon would be on some variety show right now. Yoona herself said Hyoyeon would be the best member to go on variety shows…if she was allowed to choose another member, do you really think she would be on FO2 rather than Hyoyeon?
I’m not freaking joking. I don’t joke on matters like this. The two members who got SNSD the most exposure during 2008 were Yoona and Taeyeon (and Tiffany to an extent). All the members did their parts in raising SNSD’s popularity, I never said this wasn’t true. Only international fans say that Yoona is overrated. You obviously don’t know anything. *sigh*. Go to Korea and ask a halmeoni or an ahjussi or an ahjumma or even a school kid what they think about Yoona or ‘Saebyuk’. Yes, they could function without her, but don’t for one second think their popularity would remain unaffected. When Yoona was filming her own dramas SNSD was fine? Sure they were. Doesn’t mean they and the fans didn’t miss her. When Jessica was missing, SNSD still performed. When Sooyoung was missing, SNSD still performed. When Tiffany was missing, SNSD still performed. So obviously, we could kick out any of those three two and SNSD’s popularity wouldn’t be affected. And no, Yoona not being there would not mean everyone would get equal screentime. In HMF, Yoona wasn’t there, but the screentime was still unequal. Yuri was barely visible in the show and Hyoyeon only really got any attention in the last few episodes. There will always be discrepancies in exposure.

Though this is kinda like, nearly 4 months late, but after reading both your long essays here and in the original article… I just can’t help but feel completely compelled to say, not only are you an AWESOME SONE, you’re just an awesome person. 🙂
I’m also not a Yoonaddict, but I sometimes (especially when I don’t feel like doing my assignments when they’re due the next day) feel the need to also speak up at other forums and even try my best to speak up with the stupid word limit on youtube. I have written recently (by accident) an essay-like comment that was over 1000 words (something I should do for my actually schoolwork) out of pure annoyance due to some ignorant and immature ppl over at Allkpop.
It hurts to see antis hating on our girls, and Yoona especially. But what’s more disconcerting is when a so called SONE who claims they love everyone but Yoona. I don’t know how they got in their head that they can call themselves a SONE when they don’t love all 9. SONE is the name given to SNSD fans, and I’m guessing, somehow along the lines they accidentally got the wrong information and thought that somehow, SNSD is a 8 member girl-group not 9. This almost infuriates me sometimes to the point of it not being healthy – I really should try to stop myself from reading comments, but what do you know, my eyes wander without my permissions. 😦

Can’t help but replying this stupid comment:
1. If SM has power to bring someone up or down, why don’t they do the same thing to everyone. why don’t they try to bring up underappreciated member such as HyoYeon. Wouldnt it better if we can multiply the amount of Yoona fans by 9? That means a fanbase that is 3-4 times larger than now and more revenue too (and we know how SM loves revenue). So is it you or SM stupid are stupid? I dont think it is SM.
2. Yoona is talentless? Her acting is plain? She can’t sing? She is not too pretty? Well, why the hell did she pass the audition to SM in the first place? How on earth is she assigned into SNSD (which is expected to be their main girl group)? Why would SM use that imaginary power you think they have to bring up someone who has nothing to offer?
3. You also said that Yoona can tell SM to put someone else instead of her. Yes she can. But doesnt mean she will be listened to. Who is the boss? It’s SM. Who holds the money (and hence the power)? Companies who demanded her to be their CF star. Can she say no? Yes. But I wont be sure if she would remain part of SNSD after that though.
4. You go on saying that Yoona goes with all her activities because she wants attention. This is stupid. People make CF featuring artist like Yoona to promote the product, not the other way around. Do you think people will watch CABI because it is Carribean Bay? What the hell is Innisfree? Do you think international fan would purposefully scrambling for eng subbed of YAMD or CM? Hell no. We watch CABI because there are 3 SNSD members there. We watch Innisfree because of Yoona. Same goes for those dramas. People watch dramas and CF because the people involve in it. So it is more Yoona promoting a product or a drama rather than drama/CF promoting Yoona .The latter case only applied when Yoona is a newbie that needs promotion. These days, as SNSD member, she is bigger than those CFs and dramas and they (CFs and dramas) are the ones that benefit more from their cooperation with Yoona.
5. Taeyeon has skills in singing and hence she sings OSTs. Yoona has skills in acting and hence she does drama and CFs. If Yoona gets more offers to sing OSTs than Taeyeon, then you have the case for her being overrated.However so far the offers she gets are drama and CFs. You may say her acting talent is average. Well those dramas and CFs doesnt need that superb talents either. All they need is someone popular to jack up the viewerships and ratings,so it is normal that 2nd most popular out of SNSD gets the pick.
6. I find your imagination about SNSD without Yoona is irrelevant, because it refers to what COULD HAVE happened or what MIGHT happen. But NOW Yoona IS a member of SNSD. Changing that fact would cause the storm that definitely hurts SNSDs popularity. Besides if Yoona is not there there would be another poster girl to always fill the centre. If all cameramen today would focus on Yoona, most likely they will focus on another SPECIFIC member if Yoona is not there. And obviously there will be more troll like you saying: aah she is so overrated about that poor member.

I’ve got my fav like everyone else and i wouldn’t dream of dissing or hating on another member just becoz she’s the sister(s) of my fav and it makes her sad and disappointed to see her sister(s) being hurt.
Basically without Yoong, SNSD’s exposure wouldn’t be so vast during their debut days in Korea. I give her props for “propelling” SNSD into the limelight when no one knew who SNSD were. I remembered the pre-debut buzz bout Yoong and how she appeared in DBSK and Kim Jong Kook’s MVs. She raised eyebrows and piqued people’s interest coz she was established in K-entertainment. You can’t say she didn’t pull any weight in getting SNSD where they are today.
And I say it makes a whole lot of difference without Yoona in SNSD or any of the members. She may not be as talented / beautiful / sexy / charming / precise / eloquent as the others but SNSD is incomplete without her. (And she really IS a sweet cheeky little imp if you gave yourself a chance to get to know Yoona better.) Watching SNSD perfs with missing members is awkward even if their dance and vocals are spot-on. When all 9 are on stage, they’re perfect in every way even if they make mistakes. Being there is all they need to do just becoz they’re SNSD.

Ever since them, I became a fan of SNSD. So, it was Yoona who introduced me to them. That’s how I also became fans of Jessica, Tiffany, and Yuri and all the others. But, I will always love Yoona and she is my favorite. Antis don’t see how beautiful Yoona is, she’s not overly gorgeous but to me, she is very pretty. I always feel the need to defend Yoona when antis hate on her but why even bother wasting energy on stupid antis, right?

I’ll admit I used to be more of a selfish type of fan. I had a hard time watching SNSD’s fandom grow and become really big because, let’s put it this way, I hate to share. lol. But that was a long time ago. I started to appreciate newer fans and I feel good whenever people get converted into a S♡NE.

I don’t really have a bias in Soshi. Sure, I pay more attention to some girls, but I love them all equally. I usually name Yuri, Yoong and Sooyoung as my favs, but when I finish saying the third name I immediately want to add Fany and Sunny and when I mention the two, I can’t help it, but remember about Seobaby, Sica, Hyoyeon and Taengoo.
This is how it is right now, but a long time ago Yoona used to be my one and only number 1. With time I grew to love all 9, but my adoration for Yoong didn’t get any smaller. I know how loved she is in Korea and I honestly don’t understand international fans. She’s an amazing person, a great performer and an idol that young girls can look up to. Why so much hating? She deserves all the love she gets.

Really love this post. Anti-fans is one thing but having anti-fans within a fan group is even worse. To call oneself a SONE or a fan of SNSD when one disses a member for another is really unforgivable.
Every member has a role to play regardless they are singers, dancers, models, actresses, comedians and whatever SME throws them in. Take time to watch each of them in their environment and appreciate their hard work. They might not be the best in that role in the beginning but over time, I’m sure they will.

at first time seeing snsd closely(a long time ago) this is what i thought too…i think she cant sing that well,only compared to the other members, but seeing this “girls on top interview” where she had to sing a solo portion of some song…i was really amazed she can really sing well(to the point where its comparable to sunny or taegoongs style of singing),angelic voice too, while she just lacks confidence sometimes..she blushed so much on that interview after singing hahaha.
plus shes definitely a powerhouse on acting,dancing and all other stuff..^__^
