Too much, A!
I probably could have used more provocative screen caps..but this is what I have saved 😛 Anyway.
With the short shorts, the sexy outfits, the shoulder rubbing, some close contact dancing, and Yuri’s..twins hangin’ out for 1 second, some fans are THIS close to burning down SM and Samsung’s head quarters. While most of us here don’t mind the hotness of the music video, some fans have expressed concerns about the path that SNSD is heading towards. Before we hear what silis7noy@soompi has to say about this issue though, let’s just keep in mind a few things:
1. SNSD has no say whatsoever over what commercials they do or don’t do.
2. It’s all about the angles.
3. It’s just a music video
Now, brace yourself for a long read 🙂
I’m surprised by all the reaction this CF is getting in international fandom.
In Korea,
KSones: Mad at Carribean Bay and SM for allowing those unnecessary shots but fans have accepted it now. Association with 2PM is a disinteresting subject for fans and antis by now in Korea so that’s not really an issue anymore.
Nonfans/public : It looks bit too sexy in some parts, anyway a nice CF with hot idols
That’s about it, it just seems international fans are more “worried” perhaps …The problem is not with the sexyness. At this stage of SNSD nothing wrong with trying out sexy concepts when there’s opportunity. Cabi MV could have been done the right way and still be hot and sexy, no need to edit in those unnecessary shots
1. Carribean Bay(Samsung owned) paid lot of money so they feel they can exploit their models
2. SM is fearful of relationship with Samsung and the money involved so they allow this CF
3. Girls have no say at all over this or any other CFs. They have no idea which shots were even taken. Most likely they saw the MV at the last minute on web just like us.Overall it’s just one CF among many CFs that define SNSD’s image, which is still the images of friendly bright sonyuhs. If SM starts to produce overtly sexy CFs one after another suddenly then I’d be worried and we can have a discussion but it’s too hasty now to discuss this in depth. I don’t believe you’ll start to see more of these sexy SNSD CFs soon, Cabi was an aberration resulting from SM yielding to Samsung’s power…
Personally maybe because I’m older and jaded haha… I didn’t think anything much about the CABI MV, just a nice little cute MV for me, I understand some shots were cheap attemps by CB to generate publicity but I’m fine with them it’s no big deal
One thing I want people to realize is that SNSD has no control over their destiny right now. Whatever jobs they are given they must perform. Usually they have no control and have no idea what jobs they are getting until the last minute, no control over the final product. It’s unfortunate but that’s how it is for kpop idol groups under contract.
To see this in positive light, it is the goal for the girls to become masters of their own destiny one day. FINKL was overworked like slaves too, and now members like Lee Hyori, Ok Juhyun earned the rights to their own destiny. SNSD too shall earn it by working hard, just as they’ve been doing it all so far, and with us supporting every step of the way.

Even for those that don’t object it, this was still a good informative read. Let’s celebrate the fact that SNSD landed such a huge company for a commercial in the first place! Now if anyone freaks out anymore, just link em to this!

I personally would have liked to see a few shots taken out, but too late now.
I can only hope Samsung and SM take all this input from fans and make sure they don’t change/tarnish the girl’s image too much too fast.

I guess I’m glad I didn’t see Taeyeon in the CF. No controversy for Taengoo, lol.
I do agree that some parts may have been excessive, but the girls are growing up! It’s okay to be a bit sexy…

😀 Same with Sica

THATS RIGHT! haha. i totally feel the same way you did. the mv was too much of a sex appeal mv IMO. alittle too much for the girls (darn sm and samsung). but luckly taengoo wasnt there!!! hahahah. bias-ness………. or sica for that matter

Personally i liked the hotness of the vid but i agree it would be wrong if they started to do a lot of cf’s like this one it would ruine theyre image that we all love

well idk but most of the fangirls or internation fans like us like soshi’s powerful concept more (genie and run devil run ).
the girls have been going on mostly with cute image,(even after genie they still change to oh at last b4 to run devil run )
personally i think as the girls are growing up, a year later + or so, changing to sexy concept is a good thing, because you just cant keep performing with the same thing, image over time, that will make it boring and..you know right? every group is like that, first would be gentle, nice, cute or watever and later on automatically change to a powerful, sexy side . Soshi is no exception ,you can see them changing too ,however, whether it’s a good thing or not,it’s not you who will be the judge, but others too, many like the sexy more and many prefer the cute. The changes could bring both positives and negatives @ the same time
JP said:
No i don’t agree. It’s ok to have sexy soshi sometimes but other countries like the U.S. love the agyeo side of SNSD. Run Devil Run’s promotions ended early for a reason.

wait, yuri’s twins hang out?
i dont’ remember watching that part
when did that happen

I think that refers to the part at around 1:10 into the song. When they are doing the lifeguard exercises.

I don’t have a problem with SNSD being sexy, especially when dancing or whatnot…
What i didn’t like about the CF is that the gratuitous shots reduced SNSD to T&A, when the girls are so much more than that.
Charlie said:
“Mad at Carribean Bay and SM for allowing those unnecessary shots” pretty much describes the international response as well, to be fair.
No-one’s threatening to riot, we just think some bits (i.e. Yul’s gratuitous cleavage shot, the very-nearly upskirt Yoong bit) were too much.
I’m sure that SM have turned down offers for the girls to do slightly more risqué things in the past, to protect their image. It’s not them actually doing it that bothers me, it’s SM’s change of heart.
w4mp said:
i loved the mv. they’re in their 20’s and this give them an opportunity to be regular 20 year olds. the club/party feel of it and swimming is all good
SunSica_LUV said:
i dont see wats da big deal over the CF…..i mean all da girls are over the age of 20 so do ppl expect for them to act cute all the time…i think the CF was hot nd enjoyed it from start to finish..ppl realize as they age their image will change
Amtrak said:
While some of it may have been excessive, I think the dancing has gotten a little bit worse press than it deserves. It doesn’t look like there’s any actual touching, and it seems more like a choreographed imitation of close contact dancing rather than the real deal. Also the Yoona/Taecyeon thing was an odd choice, it seemed more awkward than anything else even in the MV.
The bigger injustice is how SooYoung and Tiffany didn’t show up until the end! I was expecting CABI to have all the girls for more than one short shot. Then again I suppose amajjing is right, less controversy for the other girls (of course, they could’ve left 2PM out entirely and I wouldn’t mind).
I suppose lk2500 and Charlie have good points too, there is some concern SM and CF makers will take the “Oh the sexy concept works” idea too far. Sure it is only acting, and the girls will be the same girls before and after, but not everyone will see that, and it really doesn’t fit the girls’ personalities (well, what we can see of them). At least not yet.

The shot I’d like to see removed is the close-up shot from behind when they are bent over stretching. There is no way you can tell me that shot was in any way necessary.

i pretty sure its the perverted pd that was the problem.
but isnt caribbean bay supposed to be a FAMILY PLACE?
haha, not so much when i watched this.
but i quite enjoyed the ending dancing. Sooyoung was hottt. haha.
The_Observer said:
I think all these are knee-jerk over-reactions
1) Only the girls are blamed in the MV but the hot-bod oiled up 2PM boys escape unscathed.
2) If it were lesser known models, I’d hear nothing but a whimper.
3) If it was someone of lesser proportions, no one would even notice.
There is nothing wrong with a sexy MV. Shows the beauty of the female (and male) body with no provocative scenes. Truth be told, rubbing some oil on shoulders and dancing are kinda soft indications for getting mad.
Rather than ‘scandalous’, I guess the sponsors are just capitalizing on the moment (where the 9PM ‘scandal’ is still hot and both groups being ultra-popular)
and oh the thing I find really unpalatable are Sones (local and int’l) thinking that they own the girls. Tsk, live your real lives dammit.
fang11 said:
What about the Hottest? If anything most of them are probably more pissed, jealous and delusional as well, thinking 2pm is their boyfriends/husbands. They too need to live their real lives. This goes to fangirls and fanboys of any idol groups or other celebrities that goes batshit crazy over stupid things that’s not even scandalous. Seriously, move on.
HyunSu said:
For me, it’d be okay for them to being sexy in their MV and CFs,just like the other fans said, they’re all grown up..
But I’m worried about what people think about them will become negative..
Though they’re all grown up but they’re still girls too..
But well,we’ll always support our idol, SNSD, no matter what..
Lia said:
But their doing it like a solo activity or something right? Then its okay, i personally love the mv ❤
But if its part of girls generation then no. Cause its like selling sex lol.
But the girls wanted to be in the mv right? It was their decision so they wanted to do this. No use covering up for them….anyways i think they should which their group names to something else instead of girls generation.
Lia said:
Switch their groupname** because i realize thats also creatin a lot of conflict btwn antis and sones. And yes the girls do have an idea of when and how to take a shot…or else its like perv camera lol. Their not forced to do it, its their decision. I don’t get why people are covering up for them so much…..nothing wrong with the mv lol.
Boss Lady said:
this isnt a solo activity because the whole group is singing the song together. haha i dont see how this is selling sex though? i feel like youre saying its okay for solo members to be sexy but if its snsd as whole, its sellin sex? hahah
turn on mtv, watch some music videos. its much trashier and dirtier. i get that some people are a lil offended but is it that bad? sure its teh angles and the editing done by the..whoever is in charge of the music video but i doubt the girls themselves did anything wrong :O
and no. the girls did not CHOOSE to advertise for samsung. the girls did not CHOOSE to participate for the music video. this is all sm.
Lia said:
I personally think theres nothing wrong with being a bit sexy lol. Man i hate SM so much, so if sm want them to do this, then the girls HAVE to do it?They should have a opinion on this.
Lia said:
Yes theyre selliing sex by being sexy lol 😛

Personally, I felt somewhat uncomfortable when I saw the MV, not so much as it being too sexy or provocative, but because I was worried there might either be a) backlash from Hottest, or b) association with 6PM (who are/is practically infamous in Korea now due to the whole Jay controversy), might generate some displeasure from the public.
And somewhere up above I read something along the lines of people not minding if it were some other models or something like that. I guess SONEs are not used to looking at their girls exposing too much and acting so flirtatiously. I’m okay with that, in the sense, I don’t feel that a) they’re exposing too much and that b) THIS IS JUST A CF.
What I really had issues about is how they did not include Sica or Taengoo in the MV. (Or at least my eyes couldn’t spot em) But on the brighter side, their voices stood out like [insert simile or metaphor showing how much their voices stood out]. So I’m happy. Oh and you do have to admit, that little love story thing going on between Yoong and Taec was pretty cute.
MintChoc said:
I think it was a great MV… but it did not really do its purpose of promoting Carribean Bay.
It was as if Samsung was capitalizing on the popularity of SNSD and 2PM, not considering the backlash that it may cause.
Its granted that some scenes were not necessary, but then again it was not by their choice was it? Its a cf MV, so its not as if its one to be released and promoted on one of their albums of something.
I completely agree with Boss Lady, if anyone freaks out, link them to this! 🙂
I think its funny how it seems that korean fans have gotten over it, but its some international fans that are causing a stir.
*sigh* hope this dosent gain them more antis or tarnish their image. They dont deserve all the criticism. 😦
YURI AHHH !!!! ^_^

snsdpro said:
Some CFS featuring SNSD are actually more promoting SNSD than the actual products (i.e. Goobne where you have only about 3s shot on the chicken and like 20 on the girls). I really don’t care coz it means the girls got more publication for themselves while getting paid for it. And for us, that means more SNSD eye candy to enjoy until their comeback.

honestly, i know that all sones really like SNSD when they’re with their cute concept, but guys, they are growing up and there’s a lot of things that they should be experiencing i mean look at lee hyori. is she famous? do people like her? as long as they dont do anything more then what they did in the MV i think its okay, come on SONES i know you liked it.

This is kinda stupid….
I really can’t reiterate anything any clearer than what the other level headed individuals have already, but some people just don’t understand the industry and claim to say this and that.
SNSD has NO SAY whatsoever in what their contracting companies tell them to do. SME are fully aware that they’re not dealing with girls anymore, they’re dealing with girls that have changed to Women, beautiful women that can DRAW a lot of press and crowd because of their beauty. If SME wants to REALLY piss you guys off they’d put them in MA rated films with simulated sex….but they didn’t…they kept it civil and there’s really nothing except for the angles that show anything at all. And amidst all that sexiness with the ANGLES (yes CAMERA ANGLES, yuri did not pull out her puppies for anyone to see, it was the camera that didn’t even catch everything, it just caught a part that people will go nuts over) they still tacked a very unsexy but FUN concept between yoona and teacyeon and even at the very last bit. Don’t scream about the MV when you guys neglect the other parts of it.
all they did was use the beautiful women to their advantage and push out an image that would no doubt draw a crowd. Which in the end is ignored anyway when the entire groups come together and dot hat cliche’d dance thing
I guess a lot of people are crying because they’ve never seen snsd do anything THIS provocative b4 and I do admit that it is compeltely different from their usual cute image. But they can’t stay cute forever and they are powerhouses when it comes to beauty, sex sells…live with it, just be happy that snsd will never ever do anything that will tarnish their image and I’m sure SME isn’t a porn company either.
They’re grown women, and you guys need to be okay with that fact that this is going to happen a hell of a lot more now that SME has noticed their sexiness. SONES need to pull that delusional cute and perfect soshi image out of their heads and realize how business works with a company that’s trying to earn money, and a group that has an innate TALENT in being sexy. Anti’s need to stfu and look at the myriad of other idols that do the exact same thing and even to a larger extent that crosses the line further, not because it’s snsd.

I did feel violated with the Yuri shot coz that was downright nasty in my book IF Yuri was not aware of it … however I do understand that’s how show business works. anything and everything that will catch attention will be used, manipulated, and milked by power companies such as samsung. if i was a member of samsung’s marketing team, i wouldn’t even hesitate.
SNSD are professionals. they do what are asked of them and we just have to support them in that.
TheSign said:
Well, the CF is really shocking. The fans, and mostly international, are shocked maybe because we always see them as cute, wholesome and simply beautiful girls. They are old enough but that was just a shockingly quick start to be so damn hot.
HAHA! After watching those … parts I really thought they need to add PG( Parental Guidance) before playing the vid.
I guess we need to say goodbye to the childish SNSD and accept, welcome the new, hot, ’18+ content’ (XD) girls.

well actually the CF wasn’t that provocative, compared to others I saw it’s nothing.
however it’s because I DO LOVE the 9 girls so much and I because they’re younger than me the OPPA mode in me is turned on, so watching them doing the scenes is a bit irritating. I’m sad. the feeling was like seeing your younger sister being kissed provocatively bot by her husband.
it might be normal to others but not for me.
*reading my comment and I know this is very random but that’s what I felt*
and watching the cf surely made me want to hit the gym more to have a better abs. and made me hate those boys from whatever boyband they were.

After watching this, I do not think it is that bad (scandalous), but at the same time I’d rather it wasn’t a trend. Okay, I can probably be called naive, delusional, etc., and I know I don’t own them, but oh well. Now, I’m not criticizing the girls at all, but I just don’t want to see them get used. And there were some gratuitous shots in my opinion.
I can’t argue with the fact that beauty / sex sells for businesses, but I don’t have to like it. Though, I don’t think this particular CF is anything to get angry about.

The cf was fine. All I can say is that it’s not that child-friendly and I think they should have done more editing. SM should seriously take better care of snsd.
snsdpro said:
Just sharing my 2 cents on this article. This issue is actually brought up as SSF and there is no denying that it is interesting.
Firstly, I think this CF is still quite fine. Maybe it falls under 13+ rating (or 15+ if you’re in Aussie) which is a FAR CRY from turning them from ANGELS into DEVILS (capitals are meant for emphasis). Judging from the fact that SNSD fans’ age range starts from 14-15 (i’m not sure where it ends at) it is perfectly normal for SNSD to do 13+ stuff and with their talent, we can surely expect more high quality entertainment from this girls with 13+ concepts.
Secondly, I really hope that they stick to 13+ and not go further to 17+ (or MA and 18+ in Aussie) because this is where they will loose their innocence and purity that drive them to where they are now. From my moral point of view, some 17+ scenes are not fit for human consumption at all, so if they go this way, I can’t watch them anymore and it’ll be really sad. With this in mind, I gain a ray of hope that neither the girls nor sm would try to go for 17+ stuff because this means they will loose not only their 17- audience but also some portion of the 18+ audiences. For SM, this equals to a loss of revenue which they would try their best to avoid.
As brother Dread pointed out, SM is not a porn company . Also from what I have seen, they DO CARE about the IMAGE of the company and its artist. While image would not directly hurt SM coffers it will seriously hurt their future recruitment and marketing which in turn will hurt their revenue. So I am pretty confident that SNSD won’t do 18+ in the near future.
For now, let us show healthy enjoyment of what SNSD produced. We all know that our love and support keep SNSD running and kicking (and SM would make sure that their tweaking with SNSD concepts won’t piss us off).
ps: I do have one objection to this CF though: THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIFFANY, SOOYOUNG, SUNNY and HYOYEON and HOW COME TAENG AND JESSIE DID NOT EVEN APPEARED IN THE MV. PLEASE SM, I NEED MY JESSICA AND TIFFANY DOSE. Hehehe.
