So I watched Ellie’s vlog about how ‘SNSD should be 4 not 9‘. I love Ellie and her K-pop vlog, as Cindy said, she always has interesting take on K-pop — this one is no exception. I obviously love all the nine girls as one group, but even I once thought about how… ridiculous, for lack of better words, it was for having nine girls on one group. I mean, really, nine girls. Back then, all I can imagine was cat-fights, lots of it.
Ellie said about making a smaller group, actually that was SM Entertainment initial plan. On Ya Shim Man Man, Sooyoung revealed how they were supposed to debut under smaller group, but under a collective group of some sort — namely Yeoja Danchae. I guess it’s like how 2AM and 2PM are under OneDay. Or rather, like how Super Junior has sub-units of Super Junior-M, Super Junior-Happy, Super Junior-T, and Super Junior-KRY.
I don’t know why SM changed the plan and stick to one large group of nine girls. People might say how SNSD would do better if they’re a smaller group and what not. But I have to disagree. I think one of their main charms is that they have nine members, with nine distinct charms and personalities ♥. Plus, it’s not like SM put nine random girl-trainees into the group… these girls went through a lot of audition and performed in a lot of showcases to be a part of So Nyuh Shi Dae.
You guys might have heard how some celebrities said that they were supposed to be in SNSD. The most notable ones are prolly actress Lee Yeon-hee and girl-group member Park So-yeon of T-ara. Well, for Yeonhee and Soyeon’s case, apparently they really were a part of SNSD, sort of. I read this post about SNSD’s roster history at SSF awhile ago, and I think today would be a nice time to look back at how SM Ent came up with the final line up of nine girls.
SM Girl Group Project – Showcase 1
Members: Lee Yeon-hee, Hwang Bo-ra, Bae Seok-bin, Zhang Liyin, Jessica Jung, Kim Hyo-yeon, Kwon Yu-ri, Choi Soo-young, Im Yoon-a, Seo Ju-hyun, Kim Ye-jin
Leader: Lee Yeon-hee (1988) | Maknae: Kim Ye-jin (1993)
In 2005, SM Entertainment debuted a large boy group Super Junior, and then proceeded to plan a similar large girl group counterpart. SM put together a showcase comprised of internal trainees; most were veteran trainees and the total number of girls featured was 11. Eleven! A lot more than nine, you guys!

/L-R/ Juhyun, Yuri, Bora, Seokbin (?), Yejin (?), Sooyoung, Liyin, Hyoyeon, Jessica
However, this project group’s line-up didn’t last long. The line-up went through its first major revision. Out of 11 girls, only 6 of them stay in the group.
IN: Seo Hyun-jin, Park So-yeon, Stella Kim, Jang Ha-jin, Lee Hwan-hee
OUT: Lee Yeon-hee, Hwang Bo-ra, Bae Seok-bin, Zhang Liyin, Kim Ye-jin
Both Lee Yeonhee and Hwang Bora are now known as actresses. Yeonhee resume including movie ‘Millionaire First Love’, ‘Hello! Schoolgirl‘ (Sooyoung had a role as her bff in the movie), and drama ‘East of Eden’. Hwang Bora starred in upcoming movie, ‘Jumunjin‘ with Super Junior’s Kim Kibum. Zhang Liyin (also known as Jang Ri-in) debuted as solo singer in 2006. While ’93ers Kim Yejin is still listed as SM trainee, she also starred on SHINee‘s A.MI.GO music video. With the exception of Hwang Bora, they are still under SM Entertainment.
Interestingly enough, the six girls who stay in the group are Jessica Jung, Kim Hyoyeon, Kwon Yuri, Choi Sooyoung, Im Yoona, and Seo Juhyun. There were more line-up revisions coming, but we all know that those six made it to the final line-up. They pretty much had secured their place in the project group even from the get go.

SM Girl Group Project – Revision 1
Members: Seo Hyun-jin, Park So-yeon, Jessica Jung, Kim Hyo-yeon, Kwon Yu-ri, Choi Soo-young, Stella Kim, Im Yoon-a, Jang Ha-jin, Seo Ju-hyun, Lee Hwan-hee
Leader: Seo Hyun-jin (1985) | Maknae: Kim Ye-jin (1991)
There was five new addition to the group; Seo Hyunjin, Park Soyeon, Stella Kim, Jang Hajin, Lee Hwanhee. Prior to the project group, Seo Hyunjin was a main vocalist and maknae of disbanded SM girl group, M.I.L.K. Trainee Park Soyeon was plotted to be one of the main-vocalists of the group. While Korean-American trainee, Stella Kim, was not only part of main vocalists; but she also plotted to be the ‘face’ of the group (along with Im Yoona, that is).
Due to various reasons, SM decided to replaced the oldest (Seo Hyunjin) and the youngest (Lee Hwanhee) members with two relatively new trainees, Kim Taeyeon and Korean-American Stephanie Hwang. At that time, both Taeyeon and Stephanie Tiffany had ‘only’ trained for about two years.

SM Girl Group Project – Revision 2
Members: Park So-yeon, Kim Tae-yeon, Jessica Jung, Stephanie Hwang, Kim Hyo-yeon, Kwon Yu-ri, Choi Soo-young, Stella Kim, Im Yoon-a, Jang Ha-jin, Seo Ju-hyun
Leader: Park So-yeon (1987) | Maknae: Seo Ju-hyun (1991)
This line-up is probably the most well-known line-up for the so-called female counterpart of Super Junior. At this point, netizens started calling this project group as Super Girls. In fact, SM Entertainment initially planned to debut this 11-member girl group. They even already took group picture of them.

/First Row R-L/ Stephanie, Soyeon, Hajin, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung /Second Row L-R/ Yuri, Yoona, Stella, Jessica, Juhyun
The roster’s line-up had Soyeon as leader (as she’s the oldest among the eleven girls) and Juhyun as the maknae (the youngest). The main vocalists were Soyeon, Taeyeon, Jessica, Stephanie, Stella, and Juhyun. The main dancers were Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Yoona. While the ‘visual line’ (a.k.a the pin-up girls) of the group were Jessica, Stella, Yoona, and Hajin.
The new addition, Kim Taeyeon and Stephanie Hwang both scouted by SM in 2004. Taeyeon won the Best Singer Grand Award on 2004 SM 8th Annual Best Contest. Park Soyeon, too, scouted after won the same contest in 2005.
Despite the plan to debut this project group, SM decided to add more people to the line-up. In the other hand, Stella Kim and Jang Ha-jin ended-up being cut from the group. There was a rumor that it was because of their lack of dancing skills. As for Stella, some also said that her parents refused to let her debut before she get a degree. I think the later is more plausible as Stella Kim is supposedly one of most prominent and famous SM trainee, along with Jessica, Yoona, and Hyoyeon (yes, the current ‘least popular member’ Hyoyeon was known as one of the prominent one thanks to her dancing skills, nice vocals, and long time of training — I really hope this year is her turn to be heavily promoted shine!)
[Update] It was said that both Stella Kim and Jang Hajin had quit the project group to focus on their education. This was proven by the fact that both of them are now full-time college students. Stella goes to New York University (NYU) back in her hometown, while Jang Hajin enrolled to the prestigious Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). In 2011, Jang Hajin published an autobiography titled “소원을 말해 봐 (Tell Me Your Wish)”. The book told the stories about her trainee life with SM Entertainment and as a part of the project group, as well as her first impressions and relationship with the SNSD members; which puts the members in a good light. Hajin said that she doesn’t stay in touch with SNSD members.

SM Girl Group Project – Revision 3
Members: Park So-yeon, Kim Tae-yeon, Jessica Jung, Lee Soon-kyu, Stephanie Hwang, Kim Hyo-yeon, Kwon Yu-ri, Choi Soo-young, Im Yoon-a, Seo Ju-hyun, Lee Hwan-hee, Heo Chan-mi
Leader: Park So-yeon (1987) | Maknae: Heo Chan-mi (1992)
The third roster revision had Lee Soonkyu, Lee Hwanhee, and Heo Chanmi as the newest addition. Soonkyu was recruited thanks to the rave recommendation from SM Towner Ahyoomi (now is better known as Iconiq) . Prior to her audition to SM Entertainment, Soon-kyu trained in Wheesung‘s company. Unfortunately the company went bankrupt. Lee Hwanhee was re-recruited to the group. Heo Chanmi joined the group as the youngest one.
This line-up has 12 members, unlike the initial plan of 11 members. At this point (somewhere around mid 2006), the group went a lot of trials to decide who got cut out from the group. Sites like Naver and Daum had posted this >>line-up prediction<<, with Lee Soon-kyu being the “mysterious trainee”.

The 12 members /1st Row L-R/ Chanmi, Soonkyu, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Soyeon, Hwanhee, Stephanie /2nd Row L-R/ Taeyeon, Juhyun, Yoona, Jessica, Sooyoung

/First Row L-R/ Hwanhee, Hyoyeon, Taeyeon, Jessica, Soyeon, Chanmi /Second Row L-R/ Juhyun, Soonkyu, Yoona, Yuri, Sooyoung

/First Row L-R/ Yuri, Soonkyu (Sunny), Hyoyeon, Sooyoung /Second Row L-R/ Chanmi, Jessica, Yoona, Juhyun (Seohyun), Taeyeon

As you can see, the last two picture are the closest one to final line-up. The second to last picture has nine members line-up, but unlike the final line-up, it’s Chanmi instead of Stephanie (Tiffany). In the last picture, both Lee Hwanhee and Heo Chanmi were being cut from the group. Some source said that SM actually planned to debut the group with this 10 members line-up. Unfortunately, one of the main vocalists and ‘leader’ Park Soyeon decided to quit due to “harsh” training. She wasn’t the only one who felt that way. You may have heard about how Kim Taeyeon, too, had thought about quitting. She even had runaway for one day before coming back to the training process.
As we have known, this project group debuted under the name So Nyuh Shi Dae (SNSD) in 2007, shortly after Soyeon, Chanmi, and Hwanhee left the group. However, two years later in 2009, Park Soyeon finally debuted under MNet’s Core Content Media (CCM) in the girl group T-ara.
Regarding her past trainee days with SNSD, Soyeon explained, “Back then it was tiring. And I iwent through much hardship.” Thus, she dropped out of her training. She also said, “Even now, I’m still in contact with the SNSD members. I’m really happy that SNSD is doing well. Going forward I will try my best as a member of T-ara. Although we’ll be in competition with SNSD, I would like it to be a friendly competition between us.”
[Update] It’s quite interesting that after Park Soyeon debuted under CCM, Heo Chanmi also debuted under a CCM “mixed” idol group called Co-Ed (Nam Nyuh Gong Hak) in 2010. Co-Ed is consisting of 5 male members and 6 female members. The female members, including Chanmi, debuted under a sub-group called 5dolls in 2011.
Chanmi, who was once designated as SNSD’s youngest (maknae), spoke her thoughts about being a part of the SM Girl Group Project, “I was a trainee for a long time. I had participated in the recording for SNSD’s title track, and even completed the photoshoot. Since I was young, I was upset at not being able to debut with them.” She continued, “However, I was understanding because I knew that it hadn’t been that long since I started training. I supported the SNSD unnis and hoped for the best.”

SM Girl Group Project – Final Roster
Members: Kim Tae-yeon, Jessica Jung, Lee Soon-kyu (Sunny), Stephanie Hwang (Tiffany), Kim Hyo-yeon, Kwon Yu-ri, Choi Soo-young, Im Yoon-a, Seo Joo-hyun (Seohyun),
Leader: Kim Tae-yeon (1989) | Maknae: Seo Joo-hyun (1991)
Well, we are all know very well who made it to the final line-up. The group of nine girls then named as ‘소녀시대 (So-nyuh Shi-dae)‘ which literally means ‘The Era of Maidens’. No joke. Even the girls themselves were taken aback by their old-fashioned, grandeur name. When the group name was announced, Koreans bewildered and amused at the odd choice of name. Thankfully, they have ‘Girls’ Generation’ as their English name instead of the literal meaning. (Well, anything is better than ‘The Era of Maidens’..) The name itself was taken from Lee Seung-chul‘s 1989 hits… ‘So Nyuh Shi Dae’. I found it interesting how the song was a hit in year 1989, the very year where most of SNSD members were born. And who would have thought that they managed to live it up to their name, leading the pack of girl-group domination, two years after they debuted.
Even though having people like Soyeon and Stella in the group is very… tempting, but I’m glad they are what they are now; a group of nine amazing, hilarious, and hard-working girls. Seriously, I love all the nine girls to the point I can’t even pick any favorite. I might be very biased, but I think all nine of them make great entertainers. They’re talented in their own ways, but it’s just typical SM Entertainment to have hard time to showcase its artists’ talents to the fullest, imo.
The fact that this group of nine girls, SNSD, is where they’re now is beyond amazing for me. They have surpassed everyone’s expectation like no joke. If you think I’m overreacting (well I might be am), take a look at this >>’SM New Girl Group – (SNSD)‘<< thread over at Soompi. I’m not joking when I said how many people have doubts on them, or rather the idea of a big group itself.
Ellie’s Vlog about SNSD gained a lot of interesting comments both from fans and non-fans alike. Nobody can blame anybody to think that SNSD should be a smaller group and what not. Everyone entitled to their own opinions. However, all the so-called S♥ne talks about how a certain SNSD member didn’t belong on the group, or how some certain members stealing the spotlight out of the other members are just kinda frustrating to hear. Sure, the girls themselves have admitted that the idea of debut in a big group was devastating. But in the end, they are now one big loving family of So Nyuh Shi Dae. Sooyoung said too during their acceptance speech on winning their first ever Daesang.
“Nine people who are very different from each others, have now become one.”
– Choi Sooyoung (GDA 091210)
As for the popularity ranks thingy, I’d say that it’s bound to happen. It’s almost impossible to have all nine of them loved equally. There will always be the more popular and the less popular ones. But come on, even the least popular in SNSD has more fans and get more attention than most of other girl group members! That’s the fact. Yes, girl like Hyo and Seobaby obviously less promoted compared to other members… but they, too, obviously stole the spotlights during the year-end special stages. Is it a sign that they’ll be the next ones to be heavily promoted on the next album? I hope so. Oh, FYI, it’s rumored that they will comeback with a new album at the end of this month! LOL so fast… I hope the girls still have time for a proper rest before their comeback.
Anyway. Let’s cut down the complaints, enjoy the fandom. Fandom suppose to be a fun thing you know (:

PS: I’m really sorry if this post is so all over the place. I’m kinda down with fever while making this entry.. so yeah.. I didn’t even bother to re-read this LOL. Sorry if I’m not making any sense =P Oh well, actually I made this roster post like last year month but then it’s forgotten and then Ellie’s vlogs made me changed the articles quite a lot to make things… relevant XD
Oh, this is random but, do you guys know that today is exactly one year after SM released the video teaser of Gee? Haha I remember spazzing out over the 30 sec video. I even made a SWF file out of it so I don’t have to bother to replying it over and over again lolol
PPS: Thanks for Ajussi at Soshified for letting me use his translation for this article!
I was on MSN organizing bowling for this afternoon but something compelled me to go to this site before I left. Now I’m late. haha
Ritzy/Crazy, this is by far one of (if not THE) best article I ever read about SNSD. I knew SNSD was suppose to have Lee Yeon Hee, Stella Kim, and Soyeon but didn’t know the details.
Glad Lee Yeon Hee is a successful actress and Soyeon is doing well with Tiara, who I also love, would be my second fav group if not for Krystal in f(x).
Damn! I have to say, this is one of the most interesting posts I have read in a long time. First off, thanks for compiling ALL of this stuff Rizky!
I’m not a good commenter as I’ve said before 😛 but I think the part that surprised me the most was…this whole trial and error and cutting girls out thing. I knew that they cut people but I never knew SM went through THIS many girls to get down to 9. When I look at it, 9 really does seem like the perfect number and I’m glad it’s no more/less than that. Amazing.
And Jess was supposed to be the “poster girl” with Stella..and I forgot the others lolol but really? Jess? Not saying the girl isn’t gorjess cause hell…I’m a jessbian. But lil surprising 😛 I would’ve expected her to be vocals right away, but Jess did admit even she didn’t think she had the proper voice to become a singer.
As cliche as this sounds, everything really does seem to happen for a reason, eh? Soyeon quitting..Stella supposedly being forced out by her parents. It’s a little hard to imagine 11 girls in SNSD. Once again, 9 seems so perfect.
People who call themselves legit Sones (< I can't do that heart on this mac D: ) but then go around complaining how certain members are annoying, stealing the spotlight, etc. irks me too. Call me a crazy fan but I think to be a full on, true fan of an artist, you need to learn to at least like all members. Gotta learn to see the importance of having each member. Hyoyeon for example. Not just an amazing dancer but she has this amazing personality that I'm starting to see come out more often on shows now. That girl is HILARIOUS. Give her a lil more love, as Ellie said. Wow, this comment just went far off topic and I apologize 😛 Anyway.
Once again, lovin' this article and I can't believe I never read this stuff anywhere..then again, I only did start following snsd after kissing you 🙂
Oh and that final group picture that you said is ridiculously ps-ed (I cant telll….I am so fail.) But, Hyoyeon and Yoona caught my eyes first. The blonde hair and the soft girl image made me go o_o hahah.
Lastly, yes when that Gee teaser came out….I almost crapped myself. That was the best teaser I have EVER SEEN. Though I do hope that album thing is false…Yuri admitted she hasn't slept for two whole freakin weeks. Sigh.
Thanks for this Rizky!
oh and if you still have that swf…LOL, please share if at all possible. i always loved replaying the teaser. email, here, aim, team page, wherever 🙂
Here you go, Boss 😛

YAYY <333 thanks
Hi when did Yuri say she hasn’t slept for two weeks?
its a recent video uploaded onto youtube. check out the yt account..i think its called “myhappyvirus” or something like that 🙂 its not subbed but she says shehasnt slept in 2 weeks according to the uploader.
wowww…..
i wonder what sm training is like. it’s kinda scary to think about you know? hopefully sm will stop overworking their trainees and idols so much. i’m glad snsd ended up with the members it did. especially taengoo <33 i feel sorry for those who never made it though. it must've been hard to train so long and hard and then get cut. i mean they spend years training just to debut and then they have to get on with their normal lives which they had paused for that.
This is a really good post, lots of facts and good information. I think most sones are commited to supporting all nine girls, and strongly. So that’s why posting something like Ellie’s Vlog like that will elicit a very, very strong reaction.
WOW best article of all time i couldn’t stop reading it even though it was like 5 am and i was abt to collapse
HEHE i took a sneak peek at this article while it was in the draft and i was waiting for you to post the whole thing.
seriously, i didnt know about all the other people who were suppose to be on snsd. all i knew was stella kim was suppose to debut but they didnt debut her.
great job compiling all the info into this post rizky! and i totally agree with what sooyoung said.
“Nine people who are very different from each others, have now become one.”
<333
great job again rizky =]
You SNEAKER~! (like someone who sneaks around.. not a shoe..)
Anyways great article, i read through it all.. thx for showing us the photos too! I had no idea it was THIS COMPLEX. I always wondered what SNSD would have been like with Stella too…
grr there’s just one thing i want to point out: I really don’t think Seo and Hyo are underpromoted. I find that people say that just because they’re not as popular – -!
I also heard from a reliable source that Stella was ultimately dropped by SM, and not solely her parents. Therefore, when she heard the humiliating news that she wasn’t part of SNSD, she told people that her parents said she couldn’t join even though she was dropped from SNSD and assumed she would *of course* debut…
Now, the stuff in here seems legit, but I heard this from a friend who is a sibling of this girl who has an amazing voice but her parents, being extremely conservative people, refused to let her become a singer. Various agencies attempted to recruit her but alas, she has continued with her college life……. (she knows some of the girls in SNSD, Stella, 2PM’s Taecyeon, Wondergirls’ –particularly Sunye (I think?) and others…..)
Sure what I may be saying does not correlate to this article, but I was informed by a sibling of someone who was nearly famous (if not for her parents, and yes. Her parents legit ARE conservative. My friend would be tied to the chair when eating to prevent hunching forward for food).
I think that is quite enough credibility, no? 🙂
is that so?
wow looking at all those members i have to say i am really happy with the 9 in the group today
wow i didn’t know that there were THIS MANY roster changes for snsd.
just a few things i noticed:
1. tae looks like a baby in the first official group photo!
2. stella looks like yuri in some angles. she’s really pretty. i heard she was a top trainee at sm. she would’ve done well… she’s studying at nyu now, so maybe after she graduates, she’ll return to sm and debut…..?
oh my shiznit. LEE YEON HEE WAS GONNA BE IN SNSD?!?! haHAH omg omg omg that wouldve been so awesome xD shes like one of my fav actresses _>
I also dont understand how ‘true sones’ can bash on other members…
i mean its so HARD to NOT like all 9 of them D:
i really cant rank them cuz they each have their own charms..
Power of 9 baby ❤
yes, i totally and completely agree w/ you. i respect and love these girls, even more now that i know how much hard work & dedication & perseverance they put in.
This was cool to read. It makes sense to constantly observe what you have and make any changes you deem necessary.
such a great post, thankss i never knew this~~~~
best posts i ever read lmaooo
off to play silent hilll ^^ im just starting,……soo exited!!
is it a good game btw~
Great article, couldn’t agree more.
The roster thing is like a history lesson about SNSD but nevertheless gives us a great insight about the process of how SNSD was formed.
When you love a team, you gotta love them all. That’s what I think.
thanks for writing a super interesting post! i’ve never read about this but i’ve heard of it before.
wow i read the soompi thread and most of the comments are cynical. back then i was into Shinhwa and Fly to the Sky but wasn’t in the internet fandom of kpop. SNSD proved those people wrong 😛
this is one of the best posts i’ve read in a while. thanks a lot for compiling and writing it!
ps. it made sense haha
first time to read all these things~ haha! it’s really interesting how SM narrowed down all their girl trainees into the girl group we all know (and love!) nowadays. yeah, really interesting. i also think SNSD is great with its current members, just because. thanks for sharing. 🙂
As a former Morning Musume fan, I never thought that nine was a lot. I’m not trying to compare MM and SNSD right now, but I want to say that I agree with your point. In MM when one girl was leaving and other one (or more) was coming, everything was changing – that’s one of the reasons I’m not a big fan anymore. If SNSD was 8 or 10 girls instead of 9 it would be DIFFERENT. I never thought there should be less of them because they’re perfect as they are. There’s true chemistry and frienship between the members, they’re all amazing human beings and having 9 girls in their POWER. I don’t follow them because of my favorite(s), I follow them as a whole and love as a whole.
WOW thanks so much for the information!! i would’ve never known about this @__@ lol
snsd = ❤ = 9
Thanks for this informative post.
Learned much about them from here.
I’ve come back from the dead to read this article because someone said i should really take a look at it.
I’m glad i listened. I know i’ve been pretty much MIA but yeah…shit’s happening.
Thanks for the awesome history lesson. I only knew their historty starting from Revision 2. Also, there’s a deeper/darker reason why Stella MIGHT HAVE (notice I emphasize because secrets of the Kpop underworld in news blogs i’ve worked for can go either way) left and that was due to being kicked out. Her rep was tainted once news of her being really close with Jessica Ho (that BoA trashin’ nowhere-to-be-found-on-a-Kpop-map) came out. And it goes deeper when something about BoA’s powers being behind this… (Yes, BoA is stronger than Don Jessi, accept it.)
With a tainted rep, LSM couldn’t afford to have such a stinker in his hopes for the comeback of girl groups since SES/FINKL/BABY VOX days. Especially since he was closely being watched by rival companies: DSP, JYP, YG.
Tiffany, a friend of Stella, who was only acquainted with Jessica Ho through her friendship with Stella was spared. However, she was supposedly put on high watch and was no longer to do things she was allowed to do before. For example, take pictures freely of herself and post them on blogs (most of ehr pictures have someone else in it and were posted on other people’s blogs/accounts).
-sLaVe
Hey there, Maria! ♥
Ah. the Jessica HO thing… I totally forgot about how both Stella and Fany are related to the issue. It does really makes sense. Yeah, I heard about how powerful BoA in SME is. Stella’s leaving seemed to be unexpected, when she was leaving the group.. some source said that it made the project group in quite a chaos. Resulting in their debut delay and what not.
Speaking of the high watch, now I just noticed how all SNSD girls seem to be on a high watch themselves. Most of the members used to be pretty active blogging on CY or tossi… but none of them do anymore. I mean, other SM Towners are pretty active with their Cyworlds (and other social networks sites) but there’s nothing when it comes to Soshi. I wonder why.
Hey Rizky behbeh! :]<3
Yes, EVERYONE was confused when Stella wasn't gonna be part of SNSD or the new project group that LSM had been planning for so long. Once again, only adds more to the rumor, right? I gotta admit, this wasn't a full fledged rumor, many people speculated things, but this is what I personally put together and shared with others. I guess it made sense to everyone else cuz I started seeing it in news articles soon after lol
I don't think BoA HERSELF wanted Stella out cuz technically, Stella did nothing wrong. But because BoA's still the queen of SME, they do anything major just for the sake of her name, ya know? Mess with BoA? You'll get what you deserve, BoA doesn't have to have any say in it.
And you're absolutely correct. SNSD is said to be the most guarded and restricted group among the celebrity circles. My sources who are close to or have talked with male idols ask about SNSD and they say things like "Oh, I've met with XX from YY group, but we've yet to really hang out wiht SNSD unless we're in a show or stage together because their managers/management……." and so on and so forth.
-sLaVe
P.S. shouldn’t we pin this on the Member profile thingie or some sort of history shiz up top?
COUGH*KPSDPAGEPOSTTOO*COUGH.
justkeeding behbeh, i know your situation. anyway, i still need tofind out whats wrong iwth my dell and…that might be another week. when i do, ill let u know and see if you can take it off my hands.
and shit, i remember you telling me bout Jessica Ho and her comments but I never knew much ’bout Tiff’s situation. Oh mushroom D:
UGH. I know. I’m sorry 😦
alright, let me know cuz i’m gonan wait on your news so I know what to do next about my PC-less situation.
I think Soyeon said she quit singing after her grandmother and uncle passed away. I wonder if that was a reason as to why she left too.
What a great post, you literally took the words right out of my mouth. Kudos for playing detectives with SNSD’s history. It would be lie to say the least popular members of SNSD doesn’t has a bigger fan base in compare to other popular girl group members. It can definitely be proven when taken fancafes statistics from Duam and Naver as credits. Just like you, i can never pick favorites among the 9. Each and everyone of the girls brings a different flavor to SNSD and it’ll only make me love them more as a whole. Fans who call themselves Sones and fights with other fans over a certain members getting too much screen time is annoying. In the end, doesn’t that member represents SNSD? Let’s all learn to love and enjoy this fandom. BTW, i like my icecream 9apolitan, hahaha.
Rizky, thank you so much for the post, it enlightened me with a lot of info in terms of the entire grueling process. Although when I saw them for the first time and immediately thought, “9 girls, way way too much for a group” but after taking a deeper look, getting to know each member, you truly find that each member brings something different and unique to the group and there is no way that you can take one member out without taking something away from So Nyuh Shi Dae. This has been a beautiful post, thank you so much.
Yo Rizky, I just found your post linked on soompi. It’s attracting a lot of views as of now 🙂 Good job! Everyone is digging the article and really interested as to how snsd got started.
MAJOR PROPS.
wow. thanks for all of that research. very interesting to know how the group formed. the girls that got the final cut really deserve to be in. ^_^
I’m glad that you guys like the post (:
Thanks for all the appreciation! Haha I actually just found out about the whole roster history from a >>thread in Soshified<<, translated by a guy (?) under the username of Ajussi. So thanks to him too 😀
it seems like everyone love this post because I saw it on soompi and a snsd thai fanclub x] hehe
I don’t know how many time I have said this but
GREAT JOB RIZKYYY! =]
Great article!!! I never knew that there were so many changes!!!
I am glad there are 9 members. I don’t think that’s too many – that makes them more special ^_^
Btw, who is Jessica Ho?
The final line-up.. woohoo! I got a special feeling while reading till thr.. SNSD fighting!
dang, that was an intense post!
but it really helped me learn a lot from that! thanks!
but i LOVE the members now~ i honestly still wonder about the sub-groups. like Yuri, Hyo, Soo, and Yoona would have a group, and they would actually have lines! ❤ haha. i kid!
but i gotta ask;
what with Jessica being in the group from the beginning, but was called #8? Taeyeon and Fany were joined later i guess, but Tiff was called #2 and Tae as #7?
It was because SM revealed the girls one by one in 9 days span, sort of like teaser of the new group. The first day they revealed Yoona, then the second day they revealed Tiffany and so on.. so it wasn’t about who trained longer and what not. 🙂
thanks for this… i have learned some things that i didn’t know for 2 years… woot! you’re so reliable… now my love for snsd is getting stronger =)
Wow. Great read CrajeePiptiWon.
It’s so interesting to hear about the ins and ups and outs and downs of SNSD before their debut.
While it is interesting to think about how they could have been if they had had this or that amount of members, I’m truly grateful for the SNSD we have today. I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.
So Nyuh Shi Dae was a really strange name at first yeah, but like that member from Rainbow said, it became a name that represented all the girl groups.
It must have been pretty weird for the girls themselves when they debuted with such a large number, but I doubt they even think about that anymore, seeing as they simply evolved into more of a large loving family rather than a pop idol group. Heheh ❤
snsd forver~
By the way, this article is getting heaps of love, so great job Crajee. ^^ I think you just doubled snsdkorean’s number of readers.
I dug it.
Came out of hiatus just to comment on this, puwahaha.
great article, very informative..!! well done for SONES~~!!
I just want to say, Good article , thanx for all the great posts!
Soo young, I really love you
please you have to wait me
I really like you,Jessica!
thanks for posting this…i learned lots about them today!!! And i agree I had my doubts about a nine-girl group cuz there was a nine-girl group in Hong Kong and they didn’t last long…but I know SNSD is definitely different…they will definitely last forever especially with their amazing popularity only after debuting for 2 years!!! I love all the members their all so silly and beautiful in their own way but if i really had to choose my faves would be seohyun (gotta love the maknae =p) yoonA and yuri!!!
Wow, great job polishing up and doing additional research on top of the translation stuff! 😀 So much more presentable than how I did it at SSF. Glad that more people got the chance to read all about the history of SNSD.
omg man, im like so wanting to join sm entertainment!! its like a dream to jst join them although the training is hard, but it does pay off!!…love snsd!! they are great, i think that 9 is perfect but maybe 11 could be better, ppl jst don’t n can’t accept the fact that 11 maybe better as they are so used to 9 and 9 just seems so nice and perfect. Well all the best to them!!
thanks for posting…
i really really learned a lot about snsd…
now i know that’s why i love snsd..
their training are so hard…

<333 this article…now i know why i love them all, especially my sica, he join at the beginning until the end lines up, very tough girls. Jessica <333. Great job rizky, thank u for sharing. Can't wait for ur next article ❤
i mean she, damn keyboard lol.
with so many revisions of the group, i believe snsd had doubted their success probably at the very start. but we can´t deny they are all very determined and their efforts are starting to pay off! the reason for awkardness at the beginning as how snsd themselves admitted on the various shows i believe is due to these revisions. kudos to them! and to those who found success thereafter!
hello kim tae yeon
we love you so much matter what happen we always here for you and
think always that many fans araund the world loving you…,
more and more, our dreams to see you in pereson…,
may the blesing shower upon you.MS.GHJ.., kamsa hamnida
Wow.. i finally found the complete roster and history of SNSD.. gotta say.. very interesting read! I only knew of T-ara’s Soyeon as a former member. Thanks for all the effort.. really love all 9 of them.. they’ve been through so much to get where they are. I gotta admit, i wasn’t a fan in the beginning too.. “9 girls? really?” but now i realize why there are 9 and what they’re capable of.
Heard in an interview that Taeyeon indeed said they don’t hv a minihompy so they can’t explain any misunderstandings/rumors spread about them unlike other artists. That (plus the fact that they don’t have twitter in this kpop-twitter-trend-era and that their new dorms’ inside still hasn’t been revealed till now) made me conclude that they are indeed quite heavily guarded ^^
SM’s jewels? 🙂
In any case.. I’m so glad they are where they are now and that all 9 has become one.. I’ve become totally uninterested in the popping-up-like-weeds new rookie girl groups and was sad coz of the changing of members/line-ups of other girl groups that I like. I’m glad these 9 people stick together, for whatever reason, I’m just glad they do. And i do hope they’ll be greater and go further ^^ They deserve it after all the hardships..
Again, thanks for this 😀 really enjoy reading it 🙂 fandom is supposed to be enjoyed indeed 😉 thank you ^^
OMG! Now, I have even more better reason to LOVE SNSD. This article just proves who is cut out to be a member and who isn’t. With all due respect to Soyeon(T-ara), she must have had a really difficult time as a trainee, but why give up now when you’re nearly there. But I guess fate and destiny all came to play, and that our beloved SoShi’s are meant to be, no more – no less :). This article made me happy and at the same time informed that besides Soyeon, there where other members who where supposed to be an SNSD. As bad as SM is about handleling their trainees, you have to give it to them for realizing that these 9 girls are what makes SNSD SNSD.
OMG i love Yuri so much!
jessica really really gorJESS in their first official debut picture and also hyoyeon really really STANDOUT with her blonde hair…honestly, this pic really made me becoming aware who this 9 girls are and later i’m becoming SONE. but surprisingly, when i saw this pic and learning their names back to 2007, i thought hyoyeon is either jessica or tiffany (the two American) that was because her hair is blonde and her look in this pic is more western….lol..but another surprise is kwon yuri is not my first favourite during early their debut but now she is my bias as i started watching all them in GGTS and learn her characters and personalities in variety show, etc
A must read for all SONEs and KPop lovers.
Good writing, really informative especially for me who get to love the girls just recently.
Keep up the good work!
oo…now i noe more about snsd… they gone through so much hard work..so touching..<3

And I just realised that Heo Chan-mi is now a member of Co-Ed School and 5dolls!! How funny!!
It¡¦s truly a nice and helpful piece of info. I’m happy that you simply shared this convenient data with us. Please maintain us updated like this. Thanks for sharing.
T-Ara’s Soyeon was originally the leader of Girls’ Generation. Six months before their debut, Soyeon withdrew from the final line-up. Why is Soyeon in T-Ara now? That same year she withdrew from Girls’ Generation, both her grandmother and uncle died from illness. They were avid supporters of Soyeon’s dreams and before their deaths they told her to do one thing, become a singer. (Cr.http://thinkyouknowkpop.tumblr.com)
i never knew this !!! that why now 2011 i dig snsd stuff etc…..at first i like taeyeon even i don’t know who she is….but watching their’s stage show’s and variety show’s etc…i never notice that im going to love them by heart ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ,, in every each of them equally,,,taeyeon is gone to be my fav b-coz their all my bias now..^_^
i saw them as a human,,, not a celebrity like…they have variety of talent’s,,and very natural dorky and funny people..and they are all pretty even before,,i all see almost all of their past pic……..and they even prettier now.. even it’s old camera device and taken by just a person ,,after debut and now. now lot of style, care of skin, whiter, got hair styler and growing up ,,,,beside’s it’s only a photo,,,not in person……

I’ve read this post for like 10 times already and I still find it interesting to read!
On a side note: somewhere it says that Co-Ed has 5 male members en 6 female members, but it’s actually the opposite (so 6 male members and 5 female members). 🙂
its the best blog I’ve read..it really interesting though… I’ve d learn a lot from your blog..i know their already a lot of people thanking you but let may say this thank’s for posting this…i am really fan of snsd thank you for your information…=)
when i first time watch of their oh! mv..i don’t even know how to regonize every each member of the group…it’s just keeping confusing..but now,i even know their birthday and personality..i’m also proud that 6 member of snsd have a same year of my birth year : 1989. .So Nyuh Shi Dae. .Fighting! 🙂

SNSD that I know is 9,,hope forever will be 9,,,I like “11”, but now I think I love “9” more,,,
I know SNSD too late,,I interested to K-pop in 2011, even after WGM YongSeo ended,,,they made me into k-pop,,,into SNSD,,SeoHyun is my first bias,,but now I love all of 9,,I’m not into Jessica before, then I found her in an episode of Strong Heart,,n then I just like her,,,hahahahaha,,,,
Ups,,,such not important information,,,I just wanna share,,,,sorry for bad english
Was trying to find out more about SNSD on google and bumped onto this page..
Very nice and detailed post!
Good job even after 2years this is like a very precious information for S♥NE(s)!!
Thumbs up 🙂

How hard it was for SNSD..
wow! im glad i now know lots of the snsd history!
but im quite curious why hyoyeon, the famous girl in there trainee days, became the least popular girl now…..
BUT STILL!!! I LOVE YOU UNNIE HYOYEON!!! YOURE MY BIAS !!!
HYOYEON, SOOYOUNG, SEOHYUN!!!!!!
Not to be a SNSD nerd but are they all really 21 in total?
Do you also have a super junior korean? i’m searching for the rosters of super junior thnx!

Thank you for another great article. The place else may just
anybody get that kind of information in such a perfect way
of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m on the look for
such information.
I wanted to become a SM trainee. But after reading all this. I don’t think I would ever debut into a group. They might just cut me out.
I literally love dancing with all my heart. I’ve been dancing since 8. And if I was to be cut off like that, OMG, I would cry!
i love snsd girls
i think those harsh cuts and revisions really made snsd into what they are today. the analysis and processes of picking members was emotionally and physically tiring but this very detailed picking of girls and making absolute sure of which trainees to use was a good thing. poor taeyeon tho, seemed like she had a rough time.
Reblogged this on iethamutz.
its so interesting…………
i read the forum in soompi from the link you gave. and it’s really fun to read actually hahaha…. it even started in 2006 when the group’s name still super girl and consist of 11 members and that’s before debute. they highly doubt these girls would last long.
oh WOW!!!… i was searching for info on SNSD DEBUT and I found YOU!!.. 🙂 thank you soo much for the kind info on SNSD. I was trying to find out more about them. Did not know that it was a “tedious process” of “making SNSD”… 🙂 Now i know! thanks a LOT! greatly appreciate for your investigative reports… 🙂
