Hm…google translate aside, if you break it down the kanji stands for “時代 – age; era” and “少女 – young lady; maiden; daughter” So actually their name whilst in Japan couldn’t be more suitable 😉

少女時代 in Japanese Kanji is the same as 少女時代 in Korean Hanja which is also the same as 少女時代 in Chinese, though they’re pronounced differently, they all mean the same thing – Girls’ Generation. It is a name that needs no translation for the three major Asian languages. Much the same way TVXQ 東方神起 is the same and needs no translation in Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Although TVXQ’s name isn’t as easily translated in English so they have no official English name besides the acronym TVXQ.
