[TRANS] Sisa Journal’s critics POV of Yuri, Yoona, Sunny http://twitpic.com/36cx5c
Vocal skills? by Park Sunjoo-Vocal trainer
Yuri…As an idol group member, her vocal skills aren’t bad at all. But, that doesn’t mean she has only one range. It’s a conservative vocal.
Yoona…Because of her pretty face, there is this misconception that Yoona’s vocal skills are lacking, but that’s not the case at all. Although her vocal skills aren’t the greatest, but she is good at harmonizing.
Sunny…If she received great vocal training, she has the potential to become great. Within the group, she has the most unique voice and she has own range. R&B songs suits her well.
As CF Model? by Cha Euntaek CF PD
Yuri…Her healthy look and energy is overflowing. She possesses the sexy look. Yuri adjusts to the situation and with her intuition she knows what to show of herself. As a model, her potential is really the highest.
Yoona…Even if her role is simple, she is the best at it. With other members, after explaining the character and how to feel, they only end up showing that expression. However, in Yoona, she is the first to change her expression.
Sunny…By feel, she is the most like a young girl. When you see her on variety shows, she is very lively, but seeing her in real life, she is surprisingly a quiet person.
As a fashion model? by Kan Hoseop Fashion designer and teacher
Yuri…She has a glamorous style with a western feel.. Because of her voluptuous lower body, bright designs with lots of prints in it suits her better than skinny jeans.
Yoona…she possesses beauty that is pure and clean. Outfits like lace decorated shirts or white curtain shirts that isn’t so flashy suits her best.
Sunny…She is very vivacious and has lots of talents. Casual brand outfits suit her best. Speaking of brands, Polo or Tommy Hilfiger will work for her.
How good is their foreign language skills? by SM Public Relations Team
Yuri…Can carry a short conversation in Chinese and Japanese.
Yoona…Can speak basic Chinese and Japanese.
Sunny…Can speak in Chinese and Japanese a little.
Dance skills? by Shim Jaewon SM director in charge of choreography and performance
Yuri…She tries to pursue perfection. She excels at group performance more than her solo. I like her overall movement and atmosphere. When there is a closeup shot of her, she knows what expression to make and knows how to move her body to ensure it comes out beautifully on the screen.
Yoona…I like her wave the most. Although she doesn’t have a flashy solo, when she performs the same choreography within the group, she is great at being in rhythm. Because of her long arms and legs, her line is appealing. Even when she dances to a male dance routine, she still looks cool. She is able to express her dance in a natural way without over doing it. Her talent for comprehending the choreography is excellent.
Sunny…Rather than say she dances well, she is good at expressing them. When it’s her part, she is able to convey her image with conviction. It’s possible because she possesses the talent to express herself. And still, she is great at leading when it comes to teamwork. She also has the ability to create dance routines that is harmonizing.

If I’m not wrong, someone already translated Sunny, Yuri and Yoona ‘s parts.
Sisa journal critics pov of Taeyeon
Vocal skills? by Park Sunjoo-Vocal trainer
-Her vocal skills are good. That’s why she’s the main vocal. She’s able to express the feelings of the song perfectly despite that she’s young. Her voice is suitable for ballad songs. She knows how to control her vocal range. Her flaw would be that her voice lacks of power. As CF Model or Actress? by Cha Euntaek CF PD
-She has the capability of being able to capture the feelings out of a sudden. She has various, different facial expressions. She’s able to show different facial expressions in a short span of time and she did it very well.As a fashion model? by Kan Hoseop Fashion designer and teacher
-She has a typical face of a Korean and is a beautiful face of a Korean in the perspective of view of foreigners. How good is their foreign language skills? by SM Public Relations Team
-During her training period, she learnt basic Chinese and Japanese.Dance skills? by Shim Jaewon SM director in charge of choreography and performance
-She’s able to coordinate well with her tall friends despite that she’s short. She would not neglect her dance choreography even though the camera focused on the other member. Her good facial expressions would make her dance choreography to look more complete/full so that’s why she does not need to have a great dance choreography.

Sisa journal critics pov of TiffanyVocal skills? by Park Sunjoo-Vocal trainer
-Her vocal skills are ranked number 2 in the group and her voice is more feminine than Taeyeon. She has a So Nyuh-like sweet voice. But her voice is quite weak in expressing the feelings of the songs. As CF Model or Actress? by Cha Euntaek CF PD
– Before shooting a CF for her, my impression of her is a cute So Nyuh. But after meeting with her, she’s very lady-like and matured. She would emits an feminine aura when she expresses her feelings. As a fashion model? by Kan Hoseop Fashion designer and teacher
-As an icon of Honey Thighs, her body is good and she has a perfect body ratio. Casual wears and Jeans suits her.How good is their foreign language skills? by SM Public Relations Team
-Since she’s born in the states, her standard of english is on a par with the Americans.Dance skills? by Shim Jaewon SM director in charge of choreography and performance
-She would study and watch alot of foreign dance clips/information. The number of times that she practice her dance choreography is the highest in the group. Right after their group dance practice(s), she would come back to the dance studio again and practice by herself. She’s a versatile performer – She can pull off cute, mature and other images.

Sisa journal critics pov of JessicaVocal skills? by Park Sunjoo-Vocal trainer
– She has strong vocal skills. Her voice sounds “cold” probably because of her cold/calm personality. She’s not equipped with a confident tone. An analogy would be : Like a raw taste of an raw apple. As CF Model or Actress? by Cha Euntaek CF PD
-Most photogenic member. There’s a vast difference between her face and the image of her face shown on the monitor. Different shooting angles would make her face profile looks different too. The plus point is that she’s versatile. As a fashion model? by Kan Hoseop Fashion designer and teacher
-A simple concept or a futuristic concept suits her because she lacks of facial expressions. How good is their foreign language skills? by SM Public Relations Team
-Born in the states so she can communicate in English.Dance skills? by Shim Jaewon SM director in charge of choreography and performance
-Her straightforward mindset : “How should I dance in order to look good infront of the camera?” She has her own way to make herself more outstanding. Her execution of her solo dance parts are quite precise but as for the group dance parts, she would neglect some small details. Although it’s such a pity, it does not affect the overall performance

-Her Japanese pronunciation is perfect and lately, she’s learning Japanese.Dance skills? by Shim Jaewon SM director in charge of choreography and performance
-Her execution of the group dance parts are precise so that’s why she always completes the targeted number of dance practices. She overcomes those difficult dance choreography by having enough practices. Her flaw would be because she’s young, the quality of her dance performace(s) is still lacking. But she would often do researches, and think about how to execute the performances even more better.

Sisa journal critics pov of HyoyeonVocal skills? by Park Sunjoo-Vocal trainer
-As a female rapper, she can handle easy raps. Her rapping skills may not be on a par with professional rapper-singers but it’s her speciality in the group. As CF Model or Actress? by Cha Euntaek CF PD

Long read, but I’m sure if you’re reading this sentence you’ve made it to the end 😛

it’s nice to read. It makes me feel like i understand our lovely soshi more=) they are all talented girls, fighting!!!
Very insightful article : it gives a impartial breakdown of each member’s strengths and “weakness” :). But I like the conclusion at each point of the article; namely, the girls ALL have very unique and marketable talents that allow each to shine individually and yet blend, as a whole, into the group to bring out the best in each SNSD performance, no matter what 😀 😀 😀 !!!! SNSD JJANG !!! SNSD DAEBAK !!!
hyoyeon a rapper? i didn’t think that’s what she was classified as…
i thought that in seohyun’s language section they should’ve given her more praise. if i’m correct she can also speak mandarin quite well and diligently studies english. Actually I thought all of their language sections were a little off…
As for jessica’s vocal skills, there’s no denying she is very talented but I thought they would’ve mentioned her lack of power and strength sometimes, her voice can seem a little frail and weak in some live situations, even making me cringe a little. (not hating! jess is fab, just my opinion)
I was also surprised to know that tiffany practises dancing the most.
and saying that taeyeon’s voice lacks power? whattt? i’ve always thought that her voice is amazingly powerful. and I do not think that fany’s voice is “weak in expressing the feelings of the song.” her voice is my fave of the girls to hear, like has the vocal trainer heard “ring”? fany’s expressive voice can almost make me cry during that song.
oh well, they are the experts… 🙂
never know that hyo is a rapper…
but,from what i saw,she can rap 🙂
Yup!!
they own each different unique charms, skills, abiities..
that what makes SNSD the SNSD we love :))
Right now, from now on, and forever, It’s Girls’ Generation!! :DD
I disagree with some of this, like how they stated Tiffany’s voice lacked power, or Jessica’s voice is like the raw taste of a raw apple.
I REALLY disagree when they said that Taeyeon’s voice lacked power too.
Anyways, thanks for the translations! ;D
interesting article. although, i kept mistakening it for Sica Journal lol…
imo, taeyeon, jessica, hyoyeon got perfect musical rythmic sense. seohyun, sooyoung got perfect pitch. tiffany, yuri got unique vocal texture. sunny got cute high range voice. yoona…cute <3.
not really being biased but love yuri’s critics the best…
well, she’s almost perfect..
my bias sunny and yuri have the best overall critic..hehe
i thought the critiques were quite accurate.. taeyeon’s voice lack of power is apparent when they sang the rock version of GEE in music travel lalala snsd special..and also when she adlibs for hoot… her voice is only suited for ballads…. im surprise that maknae is the vocal pillar of the group though…i thought taeyeon is…
for sooyoung’s vocal- “Lacks of understanding on how to execute her high and low notes perfectly because she does not have a solo part.”
THEN GIVE HER SOME PARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I DONT MEAN 4 SECONDS LINES OR THREE WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE HER THE SAME AMOUNT OF LINES AS IF THEY WERE GOING TO TO GIVE TO YURI AND YOONA!!!!!!!! IF YOU GAVE HER MORE SOLO PARTS SHE WOULD PROBABLY PRACTICE AND LEARN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND ITS FUNNY HOW THEY SAY EVERYONE ELES HAS A FEMININE,SEXY,PRETY LOOK BUT WHEN ITS SOOYOUNG AND HYOYEON THEY ARE “MASCULINE”
SOOYOUNG AND HYOYEON ARE GORGEOUS AND HONESTLY I DONT GIVE A CRAP WHAT THEY SAY BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT THAT IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Calm down Sharon. FYI, Yuri doesn’t have a lot of lines neither. Even her own ssong, the one she wrote the lyric, she only has one line. It doesn’t mean we don’t know how good her voice is. Same for sooyoung and Hyo. We do know it’s unfair for some of them, but I think they have their own reason for doing it. I love all 9 ( Yuri a bit more). Let just support them. If those peopele are not important, we don’t need to care too much. As song as SNSD happy, we should be happy for them. I beleive one day Sooyoung and Hyo will have their own solo. We’re looking forward to that day.
Thank you for the translation it was a nice read. 😉

I think everyone’s POV is point on by each members. Taeyeon is a good vocalist but sometimes she can be very inconsistent just like Jessica, and I’m glad Tiffany and Seohyun will bear that weight for her because Tiffany can carry low-tempo high notes and Seohyun can carry falsetto tones (I remember her audition tapes and she did soprano songs). As far as dancing, although Hyoyeon is the undisputed queen of dancing, I think Yuri can actually even her out…its just the style of their dance move that is different. Same goes for Sooyoung and Yoona…Yoona is quite tomboyish and if she dances to a manlier song, she still can follow on. Sooyoung actually can carry sexy dance moves partly because she’s tall and has that unique appeal to her. Sunny, probably is best with cute songs…but I think because of her voice tones, she’s restricted to just a few range of musical genres.
Sunny: I agree with the evaluations of her vocal ability and dancing. It seems she is able to create a very vivid mental image of what is being conveyed, or of a situation appropriate to the music, and then draw that image out into her singing and dancing. I would have added that she emotes the best as a singer (among the group).
Taeyeon: The “power” comment is difficult to understand, and feels like a rather brief treatment of the material. I can *believe* that she meant, relative to her ability, her voice is lacking in power, or that there is a certain forcefulness that is not present in her singing, but 1) I don’t want to construct her argument for her and 2) if Taeyeon lacks power, then certainly that might be said of them all. I wish they’d printed more of what she (presumably) said about it.
Tiffany: Again, I wish we had more from the critic about her “weakness.” I’m not ready to agree with her. Also: poor Tiffany! Practicing the routines so diligently. At least it keeps one in shape.
Jessica: Yes, very aware in dance. But as for her voice, while it’s not a vocal concern but rather one of image, of performance rather than musicality, I love her “frailty” as a singer. There’s an emotional distance (in her voice, her eyes, her smile) as though her heart could not bear to be attached. She looks and sounds as if she might break and any moment, and your heart is breaking for her as she perseveres.
Seohyun: The dance and vocal evaluation, I agree with, especially the dance. Her simplicity and directness means she executes everything with technical precision, but her bookish personality and the “maknae” thing work against her ability to connect emotionally to her performance, to the music. It’s what gives her the “pure” quality that everyone gushes about, but it’s also what lessens the depth of meaning she can convey in her dancing and singing. Look at her eyes.
Sooyoung: The dancing – she seems to share some of the mental qualities of Sunny. Sooyoung seems ot be able to conjure and convey an image well, especially in the fine details, and she understands well how to construct a performance.
Wow sunny any yuri got really good critics. I think they were right about both sooyoung and tiffany’s voices and i agree that sooyoung seems to have or tries to convey some of sunny’s traits
=D that was a nice read~ It’s nice to see professional view from the ent. industry!
wow the girls all seem so pro~ like their image and all~ this article is so cool! learnt so much from it while being able to agree with most of it from watching over them so much =)
thx for post~
Mongrolian, don’t act like you know.
Heehee. Our worst habits are always our favorites.
hello all, I’m a silent reader in this site..
I want to share some of my thoughts regarding the critic…
Taeyeon : i disagree with the critic, taeyeon has power in singing; fashion style : yes, she has a korean face which is cute in my opinion…
Tiffany : I love her husky voice, but for the second best singer in the group, I still cannot agree, she’s still lack in the ending adlib, like in hoot, i cannot stand when she’s doing her adlib, but during gee or genie, it’s pretty good; dancing: yes, she take more practice compare to the other member justified by watching GGTS; however, when they’re doing a group dance, i’ll try to shift my eye to another member because i cannot enjoy her dance, sorry…
Sica : lack of color, what? The one who I can distinguish in SNSD song is sica’s voice. she make snsd song nice and different feel to hear when they’re doing chorus part; dance, yes, I think she needs pay more attention in group coordination…
Seohyoun : she has vocal and dance talent. but, it’s based on technique, there is no feeling. I think she needs practice more in expression.
Yuri : I like her voice, it’s weight and quite similar with fany’s voice.
suyoung : give her some line like in RDR, she’s daebak in that song.
Hyoyeon : same with suyoung, i like her voice. and surely, she’s great in adjusting any kind of dance.
Yoona : I give a thumb for her dance, she’s great in that, but she needs more practice in vocal. She’s getting better in the latest snsd song though.
Sunny : She has great vocal, give her a suitable song, she will execute it well.
Overall : I’m whinning a little, why they only give more critics in taeyeon, sica and suyoung.
sorry, if my words offend some of you…peace…^_^
still not understand who is the real second lead vocalist
in here they say tiffany is rank the second best but i thought jessica is the second lead vocalist
and very disagree when they say jessica is lack of expressions
Pingback: Sisa Journal publishes critiques of Girls’ Generation members « SMTown Jjang♥
Why do I get the feeling that the vocal critic got Sica and Fany mixed up? And I can’t agree more about Sica’s dancing. Lol. She likes to cut her dance action short but I find that funny. Hahaha.
What they said about Jessica’s dancing skills is so spot on… when she’s at or near the center (like the final chorus of Hoot), or if she know she camera is on her, her dance moves are sharp and precise, but when she’s at the back or off to the side, she ignores intricate movements and does “just enough” to stay in sync with the group, ice princess is a typical energy-conserving type. Agree also with her photogenic attribute, she looks very good in videos and pictures, as she always looks like a doll/anime girl, but the expert was also right in saying that her face looks different from different angles. I’ve noticed for a long time how her face changes when the camera angle moves from her left side to her right side, she is shot most of the time from her left side as I believe that’s her better looking side.
With regards to who’s number 2 lead vocalist, I think that definitely belongs to Jessica. Although Tiffany’s voice can be more powerful than Jess’, Jessica has better control and consistency. Tiffany’s voice, on a good day, will sound breath-taking, but on a bad day she will sound out of breath. A good example to look at is the girls’ live performance of Star Star Star, Jess sounds almost indistinguishable from the recorded version, while Tiff sounds good but ran of breath at a couple of places.
Regarding Taeyeon’s vocal power, I think I will join the rest of the folks here to disagree with the expert’s view that her voice lacks power. She has a very powerful voice, and her vocal skill is complete with great technique, great power, and great emotion, she’s extremely naturally gifted when it comes to singing. Her only shortfall maybe her tone, it’s deep and mature voice (probably the deepest singing voice among all of Soshi), so there are certain styles that doesn’t suit her as well. I personally think her voice is perfect for ballads and R&B.
And when did our Dancing Queen become the rapper of the group? That comment made by the expert really puzzled me, she may have rapped a couple of lines in RDR (just as Sunny and Sooyoung did), but there’s no official rapper in SNSD, they rarely ever rap.
Seohyun may be the most complete talent when it comes to music performances. She is firing on all cylinders in the sining and dancing department, she’s the best singer among the dancers (Hyo, Yuri, Soo, Yoona), and the best dancer among the singers (Tae, Jess, Tiff, Sunny). She’s tall and long-limbed, and has a very appealing line when she dances, although she lacks some power and pop. Same goes for her singing, very well controlled voice, very consisent, but lacks power, her voice really belies her age, she has one of the more mature voices in the group. Granted a lot of you have mentioned her skills are very technical and “by the book”, but she is evidently improving on her emotions as well, her fellow members praised her improvement after her experience on We Got Married.
I agree pretty much with the rest of the POVs provided by the experts.
love reading it… thanks a lot Dreadtech… ^_^… Soshi info is good to read…. ^_^
just my opinion
i agree that sunny sounds best in rnb tracks. yuri’s voice is not bad also: i always thought that if it were a little stronger she could be a lead solo. love fany to death because she is a hardworker. i’m surprise she came in as second because sica usually seems to sing the most at times. but her voice is unique and she expresses emotional actually well. sica voice keeps on imroving to me. taeyeon: if her voice lacks power then its due to the type of songs they perform at times. if there were more slow ballads i think it would better show some of the girls voices. sooyoung, yoona, and sunny all have cute voices but sunny has the strongest voice. hyo the rapper, i’ve heard rap like twice and those were songs by other artist, she’s better at rnb songs. seo, i dont agree as her being the pillar but she has strong vocal but she needs more expression. i actually think i would have dubbed her as number 2.
