So most of us are aware of SME’s rumoured “slave” contracts that it gives to it’s trainees and performers, but all of that seems to have changed
On the 6th of July at 9AM in Room #128 at the Members’ Office Building at Seoul Yeouido Congress Hall, The Grand National Party’s committee member, Jo Moonhwan, and SM’s representative, Kim Youngmin, and SNSD’s Yuri and Sooyoung held a ‘proclamation to establish the development of celebrity contracts’
The proclamation was held to promote awareness towards fair contracts between celebrities and their licensing companies including things that were heavily overlooked in past contracts like protecting celebrity rights and also to improve the entertainment industry. Jo Moonhwan and SME have had frequent discussions on how the entertainment industry can be improved.
Since last year, Jo Moonhwan held a negative stance on the current predicament of celebrity contracts, noting how management companies are able to invade a celebrities private life. Jo Moonhwan has since developed a huge interest in celebrity rights. With the help of Jo Moonhwan, SME have drawn up a contract that also included celebrity rights, having the company’s celebrities and trainees sign it.
Commitee member Jo Monhwan revealed, “Through a lot of interest and hard work, the entertainment industry’s contract terms are slowly changing and improving. Through this proclamation, I hope more celebrities can find their rights and that management companies and celebrities can build mutual respect”
SM representative, Kim Youngmin revealed, “This proclamation provides celebrities and their management companies with a win-win situation. We’ll do our best to improve the culture industry, which causes Hanryu’s expansion, and add national value to it.
SNSD’s Sooyoung and Yuri, who participated in today’s proclamation, revealed their feelings. Sooyoung and Yuri said, “SNSD is happy to be able to participate in this exemplary proclamation. We will do our best to spread Korea’s pop culture worldwide and have it improve.”
Sooyoung said, “SNSD is happy to be at an event that is announcing improved and morally right contracts. I hope that the Korean entertainment world will keep improving as more people become interested.”
Yuri said, “SNSD will start Japanese promotions soon and we hope to spread the Korean culture through this opportunity.”
As of now future discussions will still be held to further improve celebrity contracts as promised by both SME and Jo Moonhwan. It is all aimed at the improvement of both Korea’s culture industry and well as the protection of celebrity rights.
RUMOUR: I also have heard about Kangta being there as well (since he has had contract feuds with SME it was imperative that he made an appearance) but since I can’t find a proper source, keep it as a rumour

interesting so does that mean, SM artists are happy with their contracts now?
It is not related to the post, but check this out!
hmm.. it seems to only mention privacy/rights and all that, but nothing monetary. either way, i guess it’s an improvement. although soshi seems to get special treatment from SME anyways. =]
rumours are about that a member of Kangta was present. Kangta is known to have argued about their contract with SME so it might help the case. But that’s still a rumour, I can’t find a proper source
On Allkpop, There was a post about Kangta attending this event and revealing that he renewed his contract with SME for another 10 years. I guess he must be satisfied with his contract.
Haha Honestly, i think this is just SM trying to save their arse. like.. they have the worst reputation for slave contracts out of every company and you’d think theyd mention something about the terms of the contract being justified… but all they say is that they are now giving the artists rights? Hahaha what an improvement, it’s something that should have been there in the first place =.=”
way to go SM for once again proving that you care about nothing other than making money.
SM Ent. Fighting !!!!
btw, yuri and sooyoung look HOT.
Now all the contacts are going to be better than the previous…
Talking about contract, does anybody know how long are our girls’ contracts???
“I also have heard about a member of Kangta being there as well (since the group has had contract feuds with SME it was imperative that they made an appearance) “…
a member of kangta? I think you mean a member of H.O.T..yes Kangta was reportedly seen there as well, since he did mention he was continuing with SM for 10 or more years.
ahh yes sorry, I wrote that in a rush -_-
kinda ironic….
I won’t sledge SME. It’s about time they went about making changes. There’s no point in arguing about the past because none of that can be changed, but hopefully there has been a lesson learned from it. Good on the company for actually trying to make some headway for its artists, although there is still a lot of room for improvement. That said, the whole industry could do with a makeover. I get annoyed seeing people slander companies, like JYPE, for everything that happens with their artists. Too much unnecessary hate.
I’m not sure what you mean by saying that the past can’t be changed – of course it can. SM can renegotiate any contract or make reparations for past injustices that they’d like to.
Also, since SM has become such a leader in promoting fair contracts, I’m sure they will be doing this for all of the artists and, furthermore, disclosing and being completely transparent about the terms of these contracts to the general public.
Or maybe none of this will happen, and all of this is nonsense.
And Yuri and Sooyoung appeared at this event due to contractual obligations. Oh, the irony…!
is-that-true-SME-salve-snsd-once-before-this-announcement
@Bob: DBSK fan much? Too much bias on your part I guess. You’re probably forgetting that ALL entertainment companies only care about money. That’s what they’re there for. It’s not right to point fingers at them for that coz money’s what make the company work. SME, YGE, JYPE, Pledis, Cube, all of them are the same! Don’t fall for their bullsh*t that they do everything for their artists’ sakes. Get it? Got it? Good.
Hahaha alright, I do admit how i wrote that did seem alittle.. bias but to clear things up, I, in no way, am bias due to DBSK, maybe just because this post was about SME… I’d be stating things about SME? Ehm, duh. Obviously I understand that every company is giving horrible terms to their contracts in order to earn money off of them. So I don’t get what you’re trying to say when I’m falling for their bullshit… when my whole post was about artists still not being treated fairly. Oh, btw watch what you say buddy, get it? got it? good? way to be a bitch about things.
yay! down with slave contracts! hope it all goes well.
Firstly, no one’s gonna mess with the Girls! Secondly, Snsd can change the world for the better!!
Even a small step can change the course of history. So everyone involved, Hwaiting!! Korea Hwaiting!!
So, how about the TVXQ situation. You still remember that don’t you SME?
LOL
SM Town Fighting !!!
an improved change of contract is a good thing but personally i think it was the previous harsh contract that played a part in getting me to admire and love our 9 girls. don’t get me wrong they’re not slaves but it is these young girls who have put up to a harsh contract employment and training is something not everyone can handle at a young age while at the same time maintaining great sister-like relationship within 9 members is to me a very admirable feat. few reasons why I’m their fan 🙂
GOGOGO SOO-YOUNG FTW!!! 😀
it looks so weird having SNSD come out and talk about how they’re happy about the changes and whatnot. I almost feel that they are contractually obligated to deny that they have slave contracts, or how they are told what to say. No company is ever going to give their artists slave contracts and expect the artists to freely go out to the media ranting how bad it is.
I cant help but to think that they are doing this more as a means to keep SNSD in the company. They’ve gotten so big and popular, that SME cant afford to have them jump ship to another company. Given as how slave contracts give a lot of power to the company, there must be a lot at stake for the company to decide to “fully disclose” and create fair contracts, which would inevitably take away some of the power that the company has over artists.
at the final Sooyoung n Kim Young-min are XD

I hope the girls made a difference in SM’s “slave” contracts by speaking up.
Though I wish this could be done earlier before harm was inflicted upon TVXQ and Super Junior.
But I guess we should look on the brighter side and that what SNSD has done today will change upcoming artistes’ future that nothing that has happened to TVXQ and Super Junior will happen to anymore idols.
K-pop Hwaiting!
that’s great to hear!i just hope that sme will not have issues of complaints from their idol groups about unfair contracts anymore. on the other hand, i hope these idol groups will not also abuse the “fair contract” that they have signed for.
