When I listened to the song 4 d first time, I was quite disappointed. This song was so childish. But after repeating 4-5 times, tht song got stuck 2 my head.

Reminds me of f(X)’s “Chu” – kind of a fun rhythm but not very melodic. I don’t like it too much, but oh well – there will be lots of other songs on the album!

I reserve my judgment till the hq and mv comes out.
But one thing really irks me though…
“Oppa i’ll be down down”
There’s a lot of “oppa” in the song and it feels like they are only singing to their male fans.I wish they would use another word…
Argh..Nothing against the girls( I love them) and I know they didn’t write the song but it bothers me a bit.
Blah, anyways I still wish them success.

that’s what i thought when i heard that line too! oh well, third time’s a charm, eh? it’d be a good change if they ditched the fanservice and focus on producing more meaningful songs like how Into The New World and Himnae did. Still, decent try from the girls. Gotta give them credit for their milestone thus far!
crazy51 said:
Yeah, I hope they’ll make more songs like Himnae and ITNW too 😦 Sigh. At first I expect Oh! to be one meaningful song too, because ironically, it made and written by same people who did ITNW, Himnae, and even Hahaha.
cris said:
yeah, i was bothered by that line too. what is that supposed to mean? down down down? weird. but the song kinda grows on you…idk. i love it now…

in a few hours? i thought it was supposed to be released january 28th? oh well the sooner the better for me! 🙂

Why isn’t there some TaeSica adlibs in this song? I need some vocals. Nevertheless, I love this song.
i-RuB-SNSD! said:
i agree with LK ‘coz i need the girls to show the world more how good they really are… without the powerful notes the song is kinda… i don’t know a word…^^ LOL anyway, the catchy beats help a lot to stick the melody into my head!! awww… just how many days i gotta wait for my pre-ordered CD!!! 😦
ND said:
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anshi said:
I like it, it’s catchy, but I’m disappointed there are no adlibs by anyone. Or am I just not hearing it properly? Anyway, I’m curious about the MV and the choreography for the song.
The Bossa Nova JeTi duet has me WAY more excited than Oh!
LK said:
Bossa Nova duet is going to be epic!
x-eption said:
hmm..I think the song is perfect for the kpop scene,
however -as a fan- I’m kinda disapointed in the lack of adlibs, and the dismisal of a climax, also the ending is quite abrupt.
->> choreo better be bangin’

Firstly, I’ve noticed a fair bit of comment regarding the ‘oppa’, on certain discussion places… Gee? Genie? Both songs intended towards a male. Genie quite overtly so. They’re a girl group! Half the songs they’ve ever done have been about a hypothetical guy. Why shouldn’t they be? Have you ever heard boy bands singing about their hyungs?
Secondly… regarding the song itself. Lyrically repetetive… so was Gee and Sorry Sorry. 2NE1’s Fire – “Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh, hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!”… the public love this kind of thing. KPop isn’t about lyrical masterpieces that reach down into the very depths of your soul, it’s stuff that reaches into the subconcious part of your brain and make you tap your feet without thinking about it. I was unsure about it at first, but I’ve given it a dozen or so listens and I keep wanting more. I’ve got a funny feeling that anyone who isn’t that fond of it now will feel very differently in two months or so.
Really. Think “Meh, it’s not that special” all you want, it’s going to stick in part of your head and feed quietly and you’ll suddenly realise that you’ve been going “Oh, oh oh oh…” for five minutes and you didn’t even notice.
Cue evil laughter from SM Towers.
crazy51 said:
haha exactly! but for me it’s just kind of surprising that they addressed the male as ‘oppa’.. I mean you don’t find ‘oppa’ in every single girl groups song, you know. But then again, SHINee can get away with ‘Noona you’re so pretty’ so I hope I don’t see another double standards towards the girls.
Catchy song is catchy. When I heard catchy-slash-hit song for the first time, I tend to hate it with guts… and I did too with Gee and now Oh! so I hope that means Oh! is another daebak for the girls 🙂

@Charlie:
Good points there. I think for most people are disappointed on the basis that they had high expectations to begin with. What with all the hype about the teaser and the upcoming MV, it’s definitely not gonna please every single fan out there.
And the ‘oppa’ issue is interesting, but since there are a fair bit of samchon fans, it could be one reason why the word ‘oppa’ was mentioned. Fanservice, no doubt. But not that it’s a good or a bad thing ultimately; both parties win.
I’d be lying if I said I like/love the song at first listen. And I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this. But that’s what I thought about Genie as well. But what do I know, I just started out as a fan right before Genie was released. It’s a good song, but a winner, you ask? I don’t think so. With that said, I find myself staying the whole night for this song, even when I don’t expect much since their comeback was pretty sudden. This is what teasers do to you. It builds on the anticipation. Good marketing implication there, SM. Definitely something to learn from.
I realise the starting of the song sounded like something straight out from arcades (Bubble Bobble, anyone?) And lastly, to those who asked if Tiffany’s adlibs was in the song, it is! It’s also at the beginning of the song. But since it’s so soft, I doubt she’ll sing that part for their comeback, prolly just the sfx in the background.
Good comment tho. People should read yours before they give their two cents. I’d recommend it. Cheers!

WTH is this?! no ad-libs. too many “oppas” adn “oppa oppa I’ll be I’ll be down down down” for real?! the fan-girl in me is maaad. I iz disappointed! I like Kenzie’s old songs a lot better
but then after the second listen… Oh! is indeed very catchy. Not a song that’ll showcase the girls’ vocals, but it’s a great and very danceable song, imo. Sounds like a hit for me 😀
as for the oppa part… where’s the unnie love? I’m not even an unnie for them except for Seobaby, but still. sigh. I won’t mind being an ~oppa~ just for them though XD
or better yet, maybe they could release a gay version “unnie unnie I’ll I’ll be down down down!” 😉 lolol jk, jk. actually, I think I like the oppas part the most. it was just kind of unexpected that there’s a lot of oppas in it XD
oh! and I so can’t wait for the JeTi bossa nova duet!

i swear the choreo for this will be amazing.

The song is catchy but lack of adlib…i need some adlib at least…SM should let them show more of their vocal…I bit dissapointed on that…
and as an unnie to them, too much oppa…but its okay…
but the song is really addicted and catchy and will be all chart kill for sure…
Cant wait for the mv..go go Soshi!!!!

Not exactly the WOW kinda eurobeat but nevertheless something new to the kpop scene
yuriiruy said:
Definitely not a song to showcase their vocals… however i love the parts when its only instrumental… with all the Oh’s X10… nice rhythm and very catchy!! I’m sure all the “OPPAS of Korea and everywhere else in the world” will be delighted… including my own oppa… i can’t wait to see the choreographed dance to OH!
Talim said:
To be honest, I’m disappointed with it.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a catchy song and I’m sure it’ll grow on me but for a title track… it’s not exactly the best.
Not only was I hoping for something a little more mature, but I was also hoping for something… more in general, lol.
It’s like the song is just so bland – no adlibs, no climax, abrupt ending, etc. Sure I like it and it’s a good song but after a few times of listening to it, it just sounds like a bunch of electronic sounds with girls saying Oh! over and over again and all of a sudden it’s done.
And about the … abundance of the word oppa in there, I can understand what some people are saying as a girl group, sure what else are they going to sing about and obviously the girls didn’t write it themselves but at the same time it’s like… I don’t really know how to explain this… but as a girl fan I feel like… ignored? I don’t know if that’s the right word but all of their songs, this one in particular, it’s like they’re trying to shove this whole OPPA I LOVE YOU down my throat. I mean not that I’m expecting them to sing songs about girls (lol) or anything like that but it’s starting to feel like I’m listening to the same thing over and over again… but then again, I don’t know what else a girl band would typically sing about other than that so I don’t know why it bothers me, but it just does.
But, this song is so…. typical.
Not that it even matters because SNSD is at the point where they could sing the phone book and it would still probably be a huge thing and I definitely wish them success with this song and others that they release, but I’m just not feeling this one (yet!).
eeeei said:
oh! when will they ever grow? surely not a “brand new sound”
Seng Aun said:
Technically, they cannot grow any longer. Since they’re already adults. Or maybe Seohyun can, still. But I know what you mean.
Taking the plagiarism issue (pretty) lightly, it does sound like Rihanna’s number. But it’s crazy to accuse it for plagiarism. Even if it was intentional, it’s not like everybody gives credit all the time anyway. You might think why Dineyra didn’t get away with plagiarism, but Genie got away clean with sounding like “Don’t Stop The Music” at the beginning as well. And, “Oh!” ended up sounding like “Shut Up And Drive” may again spark controversy, but who’s to say all the songs have to be distinct without borrowing some elements of other culture? Giving credit, or not, is another question altogether.
Still not finding “Oh!” convincing enough. But that’s not to say the other tracks will be bad. “Show Show Show” sounds promising from fancams. And the expected ballads by SNSD, always a classic with them.
eeeei said:
yes, they have grown, but i wished their music grew with them. I have been eyeing snsd since their debut, and i liked them then. but eversince, they have been releasing the same kind of music, the same kind of bubble gum pop; they have been projecting the same kind of cuteness, the same kind…always. i just thought that they needed to reinvent themselves. and reinvent doesn’t only mean new hairstyles, shorter skirts and shorts, higher heels, brighter costumes…you get what i mean? i mean the music, their music should grow with them.
i would always get excited everytime they would release a new track, but whenever i hear the same kind of music, fused with more electronic sounds, i don’t think i could bear it any longer. yes, they grew, they’re old. but their style and music just stopped growing. and it’s getting boring.
Seng Aun said:
I can see where you’re coming from. You obviously have more experience than I do, since I’m new in this. And I’m inclined to agree that artists nowadays want to promote what sells. Even SeeYa’s “His Voice” had lots of electronics and autotune. And you can see that in f(x)’s “Chu” and T-ARA’s “Like The Beginning”. Even G-Dragon had heavy electronic sound effects in (most of) his songs. But then again, the girls are always vying on trying out new concepts and styles, so they can confidently say they’ve tried them all. While this may not be so convincing to some, others may like it, especially based on personal preference. But cuteness, as you say, cannot be varied. One thing I agree on, though, is their choice of music. But if you’re just basing this on “Oh!” without listening to the other tracks in the album, then I don’t think it is fair to them. But still opinions are opinions.
Ultimately I have to agree with you, the girls have so much more vocal potential than “Oh!” that they can give.

I’m glad a new album will come out, but to be honest I didn’t really like the song it seemed very childish I wouldnt compare it to gee or Genie I can’t wait foe the mv
Deft-Monkey said:
I listened to this song and I didn’t really like it. But then again, the only k-pop songs that I actually enjoyed listening to for the first time were those of old school Kara. However, as was expected, after a few hours of not listening to it, I unexpectedly heard ‘Oh!’ again and it did appeal to me more. I still don’t like the song as much as I’d prefer to, but I’m almost certain that that will change when I see the MV. Thinking about it, this is the first SNSD song that I’ve listened to before seeing the MV or performance.
Not being able to get into these songs the first time listening is what I feel makes it so difficult to introduce real friends to k-pop groups like SNSD. They aren’t terribly forgiving and one chance is a lot of the time all they’ll give for a song. By the time that chance is wasted, apparently I’m gay. Go figure.
‘Oh!’, to me, is like 90s to early 00s dance music. Simple, repetitive, poppy, upbeat. As several people have mentioned, there are no climaxes in the song, which makes it, in my opinion, relatively boring. There’s no change in tempo, nothing to suddenly get you excited. It’s an instant hit of energy that levels out after about one and a half minutes into the song. These are just my initial thoughts, but I know I’ll like the song later. I like it that while sticking to the elements of k-pop, this song is so different from those of other girl groups. It provides the k-pop industry with some great diversity, but the problem I find is that the various songs by the different groups won’t be comparable with one another. It’s possible to like two songs as much as one another for completely different reasons. I don’t know what to expect from k-pop anymore, but I think I’ll just try to enjoy the ride.
