Over the course of last weekend, our Girls’ Generation held what can only be described as a hugely SUCCESSFUL opening to their second Asian tour!

Within mere days of finishing their first ever Japanese tour, the girls’ rocked the stage once again to crowds of more than 10,000 people over two big nights, at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul. More over, the concerts were made even more special by the fact that among the domestic audience, were Soshi fans from all over the world, representing nations such as: the United States, Singapore, Japan, China, Taiwan and parts of Europe – indication that Girls’ Generation has indeed gone global:

The concerts themselves were packed with epic moments including two very special events organized by K-SONEs in honor of their national girl group:

On the first night, at the end of the girls’ performance of “Complete”, SONEs in the audience held up self-made signs that read, “bogoshipeosseo” meaning “We’ve missed you”, drawing tears of joy from both the girls’ and fans alike:

The second event planned for night two, was a message conveyed through the use of light sticks. In an ocean of pink, the message in green simply spells out, “So Nyuh Shi Dae”:

As with any Girls’ Generation concert of late, several celebrities were also spotted at the concert, to either support the girls, be inspired or to simply be witness to the best show in the universe!

Stars in attendance were members of Super Junior, f(x), A Pink, 4MEN, Davichi’s Kang Minkyung, as well as Kim Soohyun, Kim Ahjoong, Jung Ryeowon,  Park Minyoung, Im Soohyang, Jung Joon and Shin Sekyung.

Speaking of inspiration, an inspiration to the girls’ and in particular Sooyoung, former basketball coach Park Seungil also attended the concert:

Oops… Can’t leave out the proud parents and families of the girls that we all love so much now can we?

Taeyeon’s, Seohyun’s, Yoona’s and Yuri’s family were  among the audience as well, along with Mr. SM himself, Lee Soo Man.

Concert Day 2 Fan Account

Wall of Text Warning. I apologize to those who have been waiting to read my account, I hope it’s better late than never…

A few hours have passed since the concert finished, it’s past 2am and I can’t sleep so I decided to start writing this, and now it’s been a week and I’ve finally let it sink in. It will be a very long fan account, my typical writing style. For tl:dr, there are simply no words in the English dictionary to describe this concert. Any fancy adjective I can conjure up will fall far short of adequately describing what I saw, it absolutely must be witnessed by you yourself to gain a full appreciation of how amazing it really is. If you’re a true fan and love SNSD and want to see them in their absolute best, go see them live for once in your lifetime, go to Korea if you have to.

The overall structure of the concert is very similar to the Japanese tour that we’ve all heard and read about, the set list, the solo stages, the costumes and even the intricacies are same. So I won’t bore you with too much of those details. I’ll just focus on my personal impressions and the things that are specific to the Second Asia Tour version of this concert.

We’re inside the concert venue – Olympic Gymnastics Arena in the Seoul Olympic complex. The arena is decorated with many signs, posters, and graphics of the 2011 Girls’ Generation Tour. Once we were ushered into our section (Standing B), we watched the video screens showing SNSD CFs, UFO fan messages and some SNSD messages. We were informed of the details of the planned special event through the video screen, while the PA announced the concert would be starting soon.

As the lights dimmed, the crowd started to roar. The intro video started to play, its fancy graphics making it looks like a 3D video game, showing off the girls’ serene beauty as each member was announced, it was already enough to get my blood boiling. After the video finished, all the lights were shining at the diamond shaped box in the center stage, as music continues to play, the crowd was so eager I can feel the tension building up around me, as it started to open up, the entire arena went wild. The first girl I was able to see was Yoona because she was the only one facing our section (Standing B), looking at our direction with the most intense and ferocious stare. After all nine girls were revealed, there was a brief silence, then they started to sing the line “sowoneul malhaebwa” with no music. With bright white lights shining on them and some white smoke surrounding them, you can sense the girls’ brilliance in every corner of the arena. I know words like “angel” and “goddess” are overused and exaggerated, but the girls exuded an aura so otherworldly it made me feel like I was actually looking at the countenance of divine beings. I was possessed by that energy, and overcome with emotion. As they stood up to perform the remix version of Genie, tears started to flow from my eyes unknowingly and I was struggling to snap out of that trance. Those were tears of joy, a combination of the complete relieve of my anxiety and anticipation to seeing SNSD live, and the disbelief of that “OMG they’re !#&^$ right in front of me!” effect, as well as an overwhelming sense of pride from seeing them return to Korea in the most triumphant fashion after a dominating stint in Japan.

The opening segment of the concert continued with You-aholic, Mr.Taxi and I’m in Love with the Hero. Throughout the first few songs I was smiling uncontrollably and crying spontaneously, I fanchanted as loud as possible hoping that adrenaline will pull me out of the emotional funk, but it took a good 10-15 minutes before I finally settled down. After a short break, they reemerged in the upper stage to sing Let It Rain, to my surprise it was in Korean, I had known about Mr.Taxi Korean version the day before but I did not expect my favorite ballad from the Japanese album was also converted to Korean, the laser show at the start of Let It Rain looked much more amazing in person than in videos. Then the girls finally paused to greet the fans, it was a fairly standard greeting, I wish I knew more Korean to understand more of what they said. The only thing I remember now is Tiffany announcing the start of the tour in English welcoming the international fans, it was a really nice gesture from since she knew of us international fans’ presence in the crowd.

The girls proceeded to sing some cheerful tunes, Snowy Wish, Sweet Talking Baby, and Kissing You. This segment really lifted my mood and by this point I was happily enjoying the concert. The girls spread throughout the stage during these performances, greeting fans along the way; Yoona, Seohyun, and Jessica came to our side often, they always took the time to greet and interact with us, and it was a great opportunity to witness their charm from a close distance. The legends about their beauty are for real, as if we needed any further confirmation, flawless skin, perfect figures, and luscious hair, complimented by their exquisite costumes. Fanchants for Kissing You were some of the loudest of the night, as it ended, Oh! started suddenly and the girls rushed to the center stage, enticing another round of loud fanchants from the crowd.

After a short break, it was the first round of solo stages from the “danshins”, Hyoyeon’s Please Don’t Stop The Music, Jessica’s Almost, Sunny’s Three, and Taeyeon & Tiffany’s Lady Marmalade. Each girl was on top of her game and executed their performances perfectly, fully engaging the audience. Hyoyeon gave her interpretation of Rihanna’s famed song in an ultra sexy white outfit and powerful dancing. Jessica’s Almost, after she stood up from the piano, you can’t help but be wowed by her perfect singing and elegant dress, it’s one thing to see pictures of it and another to see it in real life. Sunny wore a special see-through outfit with black tights that was completely different from the strange outfit she wore in Japan, and it stunned the crowd, a fangirl near me fainted and fell on the ground and had to be carried out – Sunny literally killing her fans. Finally, TaeNy’s performance was as much of a feast to the ears as it is to the eyes.

Following a transitional video, the next segment is a relatively short one, the girls emerged in the upper main stage in new costumes to perform The Great Escape, one of the crowd’s favorites, then they performed Bad Girl, one of the coolest performances, as a white screen was lowered to show their dancing silhouettes while allowing them to make a quick costume change, after the white screen was lifted away, it was followed by a wonderful use of disco ball to create a club-like atmosphere around the entire arena.

Then it came one of the most memorable and breathtaking segments of the entire night. To create suspense and excitement, the screen showed a transitional video with the girls wearing white RDR outfits and smiling to the classical version of Swan Lake, then all of sudden turned into “evil” girls in black RDR outfits and dancing to an electronic version of Swan Lake. After the video, Taeyeon emerged in the middle of the upper stage to perform a hair-raising, jaw-dropping rock intro My Devil’s Cry, followed by their fierce RDR stage with a dance break inspired by Shinhwa’s T.O.P. The entire performance from the video to the end of RDR was seemless, with excellent build up and theatrics, all pieces were well connected and altogether formed the most satisfying performance of the concert in my opinion. My head was spinning from this impressive array of visual and aural delight. But the segment didn’t end there, the girls continued to perform Beautiful Stranger and Hoot, drawing yet another round of roaring fanchants.

I was fully immersed in concert at this point, no longer feeling any unease and have fully come to grips with reality and what is happening before my eyes. Then, it was the “jangshins” turn to give their solo stages, Yuri’s If, Sooyoung’s Sway, Seohyun’s Stuff Like That There, and finally Yoona’s 4 Minutes. The girls gave charismatic performances, dancing was the more emphasized component for these performances and the choreographies accentuated their long and slender figures. The fans were completely captivated by this set of performances, especially by the last half of Yoona’s performance after her pants were ripped off, drawing stunned reactions from fans. Unfortunately for me, this segment also seems to be the more popular solo performances, with fans fighting to get a better look, my view was often impeded, especially during Sooyoung and Yoona’s stages.

A transitional video followed the final solo stage, and then the lights shined at the stairs on the main stage, revealing the SNSD vocal line of Tiffany, Seohyun, Jessica, Sunny and Taeyeon, wearing new costumes. They gave a smooth and soothing performance of Danny Boy, and were joined by the remaining four members to sing Complete, which was one of the most touching moments of the night. This special song always tugs the hearts of Sones and SNSD, and tonight was no exception. For the Day 2 concert, the special event planned by K-Sones was to convey a message with light sticks, spelling out “소녀시대 ♥”, I turned around to see the big message from the stands and it was absolutely beautiful. Upon seeing this, the girls felt touched and some of them teared up, Sunny especially as she could not finish her singing her line. After the song ended, the entire arena erupted in chants of “ulji mal!” (don’t cry) and showered the girls with love and adoration. They went backstage briefly and returned on a moving boat to sing My Child, as the boat moved from the left side of the stage to the right, the girls constantly waved and greeted the fans, putting smiles on many fans’ faces. I was specifically looking for Taeyeon and her pirate captain hat like in the Japan tour, but she was only wearing a gold crown like the other girls, but was cute and adorable nonetheless.

The transitional video featuring SHINee’s Key and Taemin came on the screen as the girls prepared for the final segment of the concert. There was a long silence after the video finished, with lights turned off, many were wondering what’s happening next. Then all of the sudden the girls reappeared in a new set of costumes and in my opinion the most adorable costumes of the night to perform Naengmyun and HaHaHa. The crowd burst into cheers I was so excited and bounced up and down and screamed on the top of my lungs. It was followed by Gee, and in typical crazed fashion, the crowd exploded into thunderous and synchronized fanchants, the loudest of the night. The girls paused for a brief talk, appearing to be ending the concert to everyone’s disappointment, and started to sing the last song I Want To Dream With You Forever. In arguably the most emotional performance of the night, neither the fans nor SNSD wanted to part ways so quickly, many fans teared up and the girls did too. Hyoyeon and Jessica were visibly cring the most, Hyoyeon especially cried a lot at the end of the song; Jessica was on the right side of our section, she also felt sad about the concert ending and cried, but acted so adorably by picking up two pieces of confetti and put them on her cheeks to make a crying face, which made me and the fans around me smile. Reluctantly, the girls said goodbyes and started to leave the stage.

Of course, everyone knows an SNSD concert would not be complete without an encore. After a few minutes of darkness and silence, the fans started chanting “Encore! Encore! Encore!” with a fan leading the chant with a whistle. Just as everyone was starting to feel antsy, the lights sudden came on with Into The New World. The girls gave an energetic performance, just like they did four years ago when they were rookies with a big dream. The fans were elated to see the girls sing the most nostalgic song which brings back so much memories, we fanchanted loudly and sang along while fighting back tears, everyone was touched and wished the concert wasn’t over so soon. The girls then sang Himnae!, an uplifting song and a great one to cheer us up, they again spread to different parts of the stage to interact with fans and give fanservice. One thing I noticed in this concert is that it’s not hard to get noticed, if you somehow manage to standout just a little bit from the rest of the crowd, it’s easy to entice a reaction from the girls as they walk by. One of my friends on this trip, who was a Hyohunnie, was wearing a special color “922” SPAO hat, and all he did was take off his hat and waved at Hyoyeon to get noticed. The girls were very sincere about waving back and making eye contact with the fans, they did not just stay in their own world when they roam the stage, Yoona and Seohyun both smiled at me as they came by many times.

It was time for their final talk, the girls expressed their gratitude towards the fans and thanked them for their support. Tiffany again spoke a lot of English, she even got Jessica to speak some English to us, the girls greeted fans from different countries and Tiffany said they wish to visit all the fans around the world. The girls made a promise to see us again soon in the future, and congratulated us (and themselves?) for spending four wonderful years (anniversary) together. The most memorably part was when Tiffany got Sunny to do a prolonged squeal right before the last song Fantastic. The final moments felt like a celebration, celebrating the successfully completion of two awesome concerts. Of course everyone was sad to see the concert end, but we felt genuinely happy to have experienced such a wonderful event as the girls bid their farewells and bowed deeply to the crowd. Before we know it, the three best hours of our lives were over, the girls reluctantly waved goodbye and left the stage. As we started to exit, I did not walk away feeling any kind of emptiness, but with a boatload of great memories.

I have a couple of minor complaints about this concert (in comparison to the First Asia Tour), I really missed seeing a dance battle, and there were no featured guests for any collaboration performances (from any SM or anywhere else), both of which the first tour had; I was personally hoping they would sing a couple more ballads like Mistake and/or Star*3 (no Born To Be A Lady either), those were really popular and my favorites, but I’ll settle for Complete and Forever, also among my favorites. But this is nothing to detract me from giving this concert two thumbs up because the girls more than lived up to their reputation and put on a stunning showcase of their talents and beauty. Overall, the concert blew me away on so many levels. Visually, aurally, and emotionally, there was a constant flow of powerful and happy energy throughout the venue all night long. There is definitively nothing that can compare to seeing the girls live, no DSLR, camcorder, HDTV, audio system and fan account could ever capture and demonstrate the pure awesomeness of a live SNSD concert. My mind went blank after the concert, all I wanted to do was to see the concert again immediately. SNSD illustrated through this concert what it means to be pop superstars, with their ethereal appearance, superhuman performance, sweet personality, friendly attitude, and impeccable work ethic, you witness all the great things you’ve read and heard about them come together live before your eyes, and it’s simply magnificent to behold. I can honestly say I have not been this entertained by pop music since Michael Jackson was at his prime, and now I finally understand why people cry and faint at MJ’s concerts, because to me, SNSD has got the same special ingredient that really gets into the hearts of their fans. I came out of this experience with no regrets and felt that I could die a happy man, I could not be more impressed and satisfied with what I saw. Kudos to SM Entertainment and the nine lovely girls we adore. If you’re a Sone and have been yearning to see them, don’t wait anymore, fly out to see them if that’s what it takes. Taiwanese Sones and Singaporean Sones, get ready, you’re in for a real treat.
