FAQ:

Q: Do any of the members have twitter accounts?
A: No. and No.

Q: Do any of the members have facebook or myspace?
A: No. However, you may want to check out SNSD’s official facebook page.

Q: When will SNSD come to *insert country name*? Can you ask them to come?
A: We report most (if not all) of Soshi’s activities, including those outside of Korea. If we have not posted about it, then we don’t know. Unfortunately, we do not have Soshi’s contact information, so we are unable to ask them to visit your country.

Q: Where can I buy SNSD goodies in *insert country name here*? How about Online?
A: We can’t give specifics as to where you can buy them in  your country unless we happen to be in the same country. Otherwise, online ordering seems to be pretty universal.

The following are known to be reputable online sellers of Official Girls’ Generation merchandise:

*We are not affiliated with the above sellers in any way, and are not responsible for issues with your purchases.

Q: Can you promote my project?
A: We generally don’t promote fan projects because it would be unfair to those that we don’t post about if we pick and choose. It also wouldn’t be ideal for us to promote everything that comes our way because that’s not what we’re here for. On occasion, we will make posts about the results of notable & unique fan projects/movements (ie. soshivn), but very seldom will promote the participation of them (whether it be donation or otherwise).

Q: Can you promote my website/blog/forum?
A: Again, this is not done very often due to fairness. You can, however, request for affiliation.

Q: Is snsdkorean biased?
A: Yes. We are SNSD biased.

Q: Can we affiliate/exchange links?
A: That depends… drop us a comment below with the following and we’ll take a look. 😉

It’s a possibility, but that’s not SM’s usual practice. As an example, I own all of TVXQ’s albums and very rarely do they convert their Japanese songs to Korean, only did two songs to my knowledge.

I must be the only one who’s in a state of pure bliss after discovering that not one, but two fairly huge pictures of Tiffany are currently gracing the main page (before the former one slips off to the second page) of the blog. Both are written by Kenneth, who obviously has the right idea of enticing readers into viewing his post(s) by positioning said pictures atop his articles before proceeding to write about any sort of news that have surfaced recently. I mean, who could resist such captivating beauty? (Other than those who I know have an opinion or preference, of course.)

While it’s very disconcerting to have to view the images in plain sight if I have a relative who’s abreast to my sitting location and looking at the monitor simultaneously, it’s conspicuous, refreshing and welcome sight to be greeted by an angel every time I visit the blog.

In short, Kenneth, if you’re reading this, continue doing it (only if necessary). I’m sure that several others, including me, will appreciate and support the effort made. (Although the prospect of your consistent action would draw minor flak and solicitude towards you from fans of a certain member other than Tiffany.)

I found this comment on soompi by a very knowledgeable SONE regarding their japanese promotions. I thought I’d share this person’s view about some of the worries and criticism SNSD’s facing regarding japan: A MUST READ FOR ALL SONES!

WARNING (its a long read but has good informations regarding SM/UMJ’s plans for SNSD): (cr. bbvc @ soompi)

“out of most korean entertainment companies, sment is probably the most experienced in expanding outside of korea – boa, dbsk, the grace, the trax, and other sment artists officially debuting and concentrating in the japanese market; creating subgroups and adding members to super junior to officially debut and have activities in the chinese market, as well as having other sment artists who are mainly focused in the chinese market such as zhang li yin; and of course trying out the us market with boa. regarding sment’s plans for snsd in japan, no one can really say for sure unless one is part of sment’s management and planning division or something. but sment and snsd did give a few hints – (1) snsd’s home base even for overseas/international activities will still be korea, (2) snsd will concentrate on group activities as 9 members, and (3) snsd’s plans and activities for overseas/international advancement will be different.

snsd officially debuting in japan does not necessarily equate to snsd doing full promotions in japan the way snsd has been doing full promotions in korea. this being the case, it seems like a lot of you have the idea that “snsd is not doing full promotions in japan like how snsd is doing full promotions in korea, then perhaps snsd/sment/umj is neglecting promotions in japan because all they are concerned about is earning money.”

first of all, it is a universal fact that any kind of business is concerned with profits. so that should not even be an issue at all.

and second of all, snsd/sment/umj is NOT neglecting promotions in japan. actually, it seems like the way sment/umj is promoting snsd in japan is quite similar to how international artists are being promoted in japan – and this could be the reason why snsd is not in japan all the time doing the ideal full-blown promotions. and perhaps snsd’s promotions in japan may not be noticed by most probably because these activities is considered as something usual by most when in reality, these activities are so much more than that. snsd performing in music station should not be considered as something to be expected, and snsd having their own concert tour should not be taken for granted.

(a.) in japan, music station is the music show to be in. snsd have been invited to perform all their japanese releases in music station, even run devil run when it was still released as a digital single last january.

it is not that easy to be invited to perform in music station: for most, getting invited to perform usually take years after officially debuting; a lot of japanese artists and most korean artists who have officially debuted in japan have yet to be invited actually; and some artists who were usually invited to perform before do not get any invites later on. being invited to perform in music station is really a big deal in japan. remember what snsd sooyoung said before? when she debuted as a duo in japan, it was her dream to perform in music station but it did not happen then since her agency during that time was only a small company. sment/umj is obviously doing something right if sment/umj is working it out so that part of snsd’s promotions in japan is being included in the guests line-up of music station.

to put it in perspective, in japan there are more releases but less promotions: at least 10 singles and 10 albums plus quite a few digital singles are released every week; an artist usually promotes with two or three live performances; and music station is a 1 hour show that only has around 5 to 6 guests line-up every week. in korea, there are considerably less releases but more promotions: probably at most 10 releases every week; an artist can promote more than one song and for a duration of two to three months; and music bank is a 1 hour show that would have around 15 guests line-up every week.

a little related information: before arashi usually do two to three live performances in different music shows when they do promotions but recently, arashi would usually only do one live performance and it would be in music station. and here are few examples of crazy scheduled releases in japan: 1) arashi had 5 releases in five consecutive months last year – a single in july, an album in august, and 3 more singles – one each in september, october and november; 2) also last year, one idol group released 3 singles in three consecutive weeks; and 3) a few weeks ago, one jpop artist released 2 albums on the same day one week, while another jpop artist released 2 singles on the same day on another week – this is actually two separate releases and not two versions/editions of one release; it is like snsd releasing gee and genie on the same day.

(b.) snsd’s debut concert tour in japan is an arena tour, and with additional shows when it was rescheduled to a later date even – this is not one or two snsd concert in just one city, this is snsd concerts in various cities in japan.

most debuting artists would usually do smaller venues with smaller capacities in japan. and most artists who could do bigger venues (arena tours/dome tours) in japan are usually those with already established careers and/or dedicated fanbases. it took snsd three years to be able to have their own concert in korea. thus, sment/umj did apparently work quite hard to be able to schedule, plan and organize a concert tour for snsd in japan that would happen only months after their official debut as part of snsd’s promotions. add the fact that sment/umj had to reschedule everything to a later date, which surely could not have been any easier.

and frankly, an snsd concert tour in japan is possibly one of the best promotional strategies that sment/umj could do. and for some time now, snsd undoubtedly had been really busy and pretty much occupied with the planning, preparing, and rehearsing for the concert itself. snsd would be able to do what they love best during the concerts – snsd performing on stage. and since it is an snsd concert, snsd can be their adorable selves and show their different qualities/traits as well as their group dynamics too.

some of you suggested some things that snsd should be doing right now so that it can be said that snsd is actually promoting in japan… such as snsd appearing in various television shows in japan to show their personalities? or like snsd doing fan-related events to meet with their fans? if the purposes of doing these random things is snsd showing their personalities and/or snsd meeting with their fans – those and so much more can definitely be accomplished during their own concert tour.

it could be argued that snsd should be promoting to the general japanese public rather than just their existing japanese fanbase…. BUT if the short-term goal of snsd/sment/umj right now is to solidify snsd’s existing fanbase in japan first and then concentrate on building and growing the fanbase at a later time – well, then snsd/sment/umj is definitely right on track.

being familiar with how female idol groups are usually being promoted in japan, it was actually kind of worrying when snsd announced their japanese debut. but sment/umj is doing a great job of managing snsd in japan right now… so it is kind of surprising that snsd’s international fans are instead worrying about snsd’s promotions in japan just because it is not exactly the same with snsd’s promotions in korea.”

Thank you LadyIgraine for that insightful analysis from a soompi commenter.

I have a question, and I guess I’m too lazy to research it myself, and there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable SONEs in this forum, so here it goes. I thought I read that in Japan it is illegal to lipsync at a concert that fans have paid tickets for (without, of course, disclosing this fact before the concert). It’s sort of like a consumer protection law that fans who paid good money for tickets should get their money’s worth. I know there is a proposal by a Korean legislator that would also have acts disclose their lipsyncing during broadcast shows (ostensibly to give other singing genres a fighting chance against the dancing pop idols).

    So my questions are:
Is it true that Japan requires live singing at a concerts, or at least a disclosure of lip syncing?
If there is such a requirement, does it extend to Japanese music broadcasts?
In light of the long set lists and dancing the girls do, how much of their Into the New World concerts were lipsynced?
Did any of this affect the huge arena tours that TVXQ did in Japan, or the recent Big Bang concerts there?
How will any of this affect the girls’ Japanese concerts? Will they be as long as their ITNW concerts, or will it be shorter to protect the girls’ voices and stamina?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Does anyone know which Korean groups have appeared on Music Station, and which ones have failed to receive an invitation? I guess I have not been paying attention to my allkpop like I should, but I thought I read that groups like 4Minute, After School, 2PM went to Japan within the past year or so for fanmeets and concerts etc.. Did they record songs in Japanese, or did they just reward their fans of their Korean-language music?

Canada has rules stipulating a certain amount of Canadian content on their radio airwaves. I would have to assume that there may be a “limit” of sorts on how many “foreign” acts that Music station will invite, especially since they have only 5-6 guests per week. Yes, SNSD/Kara/BigBang etc. do sing in Japanese, so they are making a serious attempt to connect with the Japanese audience, so perhaps they are not “foreign”, unlike, say, Avril Lavigne who I assume sang in English when she was invited to sing on that Music Station broadcast that SNSD also happened to be on.

Here’s what I know, I don’t know for a fact that Japan has any kind of no lip-sync or lip-sync disclosure rules, but every time the girls performed on Music Station, they sang live. But if you watch their very first showcase (pre-debut) in Japan, some of the songs were lip-synced. For ITNW concerts, I know for sure that several songs were lip-synced due to the rigorous dance choreography, such as Genie, Show Show Show, Girls’ Generation and Chocolate Love, but a vast majority of their ITNW concerts were sung live. TVXQ certainly does lip-sync certain songs in their arena tours also due to intense dance routines, and when they performed in SMTown in January, they lip-synced their medley of classic songs. As far as how SNSD’s Japan tour is going to be similar/different compare to ITNW, I don’t have a clue.

The Korean artists that have appeared on Music Station that I know of: BoA, TVXQ, BIGBANG, KARA, and SNSD, there could be others but it’s a very short and exclusive list, it took TVXQ 3 years after their Japan debut to appear on Music Station just to give you an idea of the status of being an invited guest. As for the other groups, 4Minute has released singles/album in Japanese, 2PM has just released their first Japanese single, and After School has not officially started any Japanese activities. I don’t know if there’s a “limit” or any rules that apply to Music Station’s invitations of foreign gusts, but I guess it also depends on who’s promoting and when, Korean artists on Music Station is already a rare occurrence so I don’t think it’s anywhere close to breaking limits if there are any limits. Music Station did kind of pull an odd ball when they had TVXQ, SNSD and Avril all in the same week, but that’s really a once in a blue moon type of deal.

I would assume also that if you’re an artist officially promoting in Japan, you’re expected to perform a Japanese language song on Music Station, so artists like TVXQ and SNSD will be singing in Japanese. But for a visiting foreign artist like Avril, who is not officially making a debut in Japan, I think the expectation is different and so she sang in English. Same applies to Music Bank in Korea where almost all of the performance are in Korean with the rare exception of a foreign visiting artist like Jason Derulo who sang in English on his MuBank appearance, and KAT-TUN sang in Japanese when they visited and appear on MNet. I guess it all depends on the artist and the situation, there are no rules written on stone.

not to hate on 2NE1 but because they had an unfortunate circumstance regarding their debut, i think it was inevitable that even if the disaster didn’t happen i doubt they’ll actually succeed in japan. they released an album (or a single i forgot) and it debut @ 24 on the oricon daily, AKP decided to write an article about it calling it a “failure” debut. although it wasn’t the best time for them, it was indeed a very low result despite prior higher expectations. though the disaster may have played the part of it, BJ’s also were using the excuse of the album being over priced(though SNSD’s debut dvd cost around $50 and to this day is still in the top 10 of dvd sales months after its released) …i mean i look @ 4minute and BEG’s promotions in japan, and they sort of have a similar feel but they barely get by in japan too. bigbang just started picking up in the japanese market even though they debut their 2 years ago, and practically concentrated in japan for the majority of their hiatus in the kpop scene. but still, YG types of music is still considered a minority in japan…though japan have their own hip hop and r&b (CHEMISTY and namie amuro being examples), they have yet to touch the kind of audience outside their kpop fandom in japan. YG then decided to postpone the debut till september i believe to focus their attention in their american debut instead.

the language really defends…in kara’s case there were accusations by some about dsp practically forcing the girls to learn the language as soon as possible when SNSD started their activities in japan. this was also hinted a few months after when kara was invited in “gag concert” when the mcs jokingly talked about “SNSD finally arriving in japan, best to get ready!” with SNSD, its hard to tell. although most of the members are now trying to speak japanese as much as they can, there are still members who have yet to fully engagement themselves to actually learn and speak it publicly. i like their progress though, but it can be improved! dbsk/boa are the obvious japanese speaker because they’ve spent a considerable amount of time in japan and not just know the language but social ways of the japanese.

    Very interesting, RagingXL. Thank you.
Now weren’t the Japanese showcases “free” shows in that you could apply for a free ticket once you purchase their first single. I could be wrong about this (I’m a SONE, but a busy SONE so it’s hard to keep up!) So if the girls did lipsync at their showcase no fans were “cheated” out of their money. (No fans should ever feel cheated when they are in the presence of SNSD).

I thought that CNBlue and/or FT Island had followings in Japan, with Japan being more receptive to the “rock” music scene. It would be interesting to know if they were ever invited on Music Station. Regardless, you are correct when you say that SNSD belongs to a very exclusive club vis-a-vis their repeated Music Station appearances, especially given the fact that (and I hate even saying this) their Japanese language skills as a whole haven’t been up to the level of TVXQ/Kara/BigBang.

I took a look at the girls’ concert schedules, and it is mostly back-to-back concert dates, with a period of a week or so in between the double-dates. So it’s nothing the girls haven’t done before in their ITNW concerts.

Speaking of limits on foreigners, I think I remember reading that “foreign” acts in Korea are restricted to Mnet countdown and KBS Music Bank. It’s some sort of rule or something (or maybe I should stop skim-reading everything) to protect Korean acts. Brian and Jason Derulo’s In My Head were on those two shows (I thought Brian should have at least sung his parts in Korean). I do remember Lady Gaga performing and being interviewed by Jay Park on mnet.

I’ve been hearing about 2NE1 in Japan for the longest time. Did that happen yet?

    • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

The showcase was a free show but the tickets didn’t come with their single because they hadn’t debuted and released any singles at that time, the tickets came with the DVD they released ahead of their debut. Not being able to speak Japanese fluently isn’t really a deterrent to be invited on Music Station, it’s a music show after all, not a talk show (even though it has way too much talking for a music show in my opinion), BigBang’s Japanese level isn’t any better than SNSD’s, the only one that’s sort of fluent is Taeyang, Seungri and Daesung speak some but are not conversable, GD & TOP don’t speak any besides basic greeting/self-intro and they don’t appear to be interested in learning or attempt to speak Japanese on TV. KARA is an interesting case, they seem to have picked up Japanese very quickly but most of what they say sound scripted or prepared in advance, I’d like to see if they can hold conversations on a variety show without a translator. TVXQ is the only Korean group I know of where all members (original 5) speak fluent Japanese without needing a translator.

I’m not so sure foreigners can only perform on MNet and Music Bank, just recently I saw Far East Movement perform on Music Core, and I’m sure Inkigayo hosted a foreign artist at some point. As for In My Head, it would have sounded really weird if Jason Derulo was singing English and Brian singing in Korean, I think it made sense they sang in English.

2NE1 was suppose to debut in Japan back in March, they were in Japan getting ready to debut and they were invited to Music Station for their debut performance, speaking of another Korean artist being invited, but it got canceled due to the earthquake and their debut was derailed. They’ve postponed their Japanese debut activities until September and proceeded to promote in Korea for the time being.

      • hyobaby's avatar hyobaby said:

dont mean to sound mean or anything but doesnt the fact the snsd is under the same record label as tvxq and boa make them a bit more popular and my be the reason why thye recieved the invite to music station besides they are very popular in korea in other asian countries so the invite seems like it was pretty much in the bag. as for bigbang they were well recieved so they pretty much helped 2ne1 get in and they too are a popular music group.

        • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

SNSD signed with Universal Music Japan while TVXQ and BoA are under Avex Trax, so technically not the same label in Japan. You’re certainly right that SNSD is viewed favorably because they’re from SM just like TVXQ and BoA, and SM has used that as an advertising mechanism to gain recognition for SNSD. But both UMJ and Avex have a lot of clout in Japan and I have no doubt UMJ is more than capable of negotiating for appearance for SNSD on various music shows.

I think the reason behind SNSD, Big Bang (UMJ) and 2NE1 (Avex) having a much easier time getting invited to music shows is largely because of BoA and TVXQ’s efforts in years past. Those two basically paved the roads and helped all Korean artists gain acceptance into the JPop scene and their work will benefit all Korean artists going forward, not just SNSD.

    @ Justa Tip:

actually even japanese idols are not exempted to lip synching, and they even lip sync as much as they are allowed too…which includes live performances on music shows and concerts. when i watched Perfume’s latest perfomance on MS (during SNSD’s guesting last week), it sounds like they were lip synching (not that i’m accusing them of it b/c i like Perfume) because their voices were too electronic-sounding to be able to sound like someone’s normal singing voice. although Perfume’s situation is sort of a given (maybe because they’re a veteran and established group…and they also host another music show on their own: MusicJAPAN), MS still has very strict policy about lip synching for any invited artists. the guests are only allowed to have backtracks (just in the case of SNSD), but ALL invited guests will have to sing live…that’s a protocol. i haven’t heard any laws banning lip synching in japan but i do know that there are some really strict shows not allowing it.

regarding the invitations of foreign artists on MS: besides what RagingXL mentioned of what kpop groups that have performed in MS. my good guess is that its cause they are handled by a global company like UMJ (subsidiary for Nayutawave) that has a good reputation to promote foreign acts promoting in japan. interestingly, the 3 kpop groups (BB, kara, and SNSD) that have performed on MS are all under UMJ, which could mean, UMJ has a very good connections with MS pds to be able to have their kpop artists being part of the line-ups on their weekly shows. getting an invitation to perform on MS is a HUGE honor to not just japanese artists themselves but to foreign acts like kpop artists (excluding American artists b/c they’re already have synonymity globally). and MS is still kind of selective about inviting kpop acts to perform on the show…DBSK and Boa were different cause they were labeled as “real japanese artists.” thanks to their hardwork and effort, SNSD had a bit of a smooth transition in japan and are easily invited to shows like MS, MusicJAPAN, and Hey3x.

and about the showcase and SNSD’s upcoming concerts: SNSD DID sing all of their songs live during their first showcase w/ the exception ITNW. if u search up on fancams, you’ll know that the girls sang live on the showcase…the reason why the SM uploaded showcase sounded like it was lip synch its cause it was dvd mastered to sound PERFECT, but fancams will tell you that they sang it live. it HAS to be sang live because its a showcase, plus japan’s sound system is still 100x more upgraded than that of korean sound systems. with their upcoming concerts, i think they will lip synch a few songs like what RagingXL said…the dances for those given songs are more grueling for a nearly 3 hrs concerts. but i wouldn’t really worry about it since they’re not the first to do such things anyways…they will still sing 90% of their songs live so it shouldn’t really be a big deal!

    • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

Actually SNSD lip-synced more than just ITNW in their Japanese showcase, I know they also lip-synced at least Genie and Gee, and that’s not from the DVD but from fancams:

You may still hear them ad-lib live and everything but the recorded vocals dominated their performances. I don’t blame them for doing it ’cause the do the same thing for ITNW concerts also, it is a song that’s best seen lip-synced because of the dance.

      • LadyIgraine's avatar LadyIgraine said:

from the japanese fan accounts who got the level one seats, they said you can visibly hear the girls’ breathing, which means they were singing live. but yeah, it was indeed the backtrack that pretty mask their original voices but the adlibs were all done live…case in point RDR performance.

But from what I can tell, if you post in the Social Lounge forum on topics unrelated to SNSD, it will be considered a “spam” post and won’t count towards your eligible “non-spam” posts. You’re not really spamming but it’s just not contributing to any SNSD discussions. Posting on any of the other forums that are directly related to SNSD discussions will count towards your non-spam post which is needed to get into forums such as Soshi Subs and Videos.

a CNN article talks about the 50 awesome things about korea…and at no. 32. girl groups, including our very own SNSD.

    • JustaTip's avatar JustaTip said:

Do you have a link to that article? I want to see if the entry specifically said girl groups (thus leaving out boy groups). Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it the case for Korea and Japan that boy groups have a larger following (mostly due to passionate fangirls). I distinctly remember reading a list of the top 10 selling albums so far in 2011 in Korea and there was not a girl group on the list, and TVXQ had something like 250,000 plus albums sold if you combine it with their repackage.

When SNSD launched in 2007 alongside the Wondergirls and Kara, people were skeptical of girl groups, right? SNSD is performing phenomenally for a girl group but they cannot touch those numbers. Heck, we had ELFs screaming that they should have won more year-end awards because they sold more albums of Bonamana.

If they want to say that Korea has some truly exceptional girl groups that are setting the standard for Asia, then that’s fine.

      • LadyIgraine's avatar LadyIgraine said:

      • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

To be fair, no “first tier” girl group has promoted in the first half of 2011, no SNSD, KARA, 2NE1 (coming back soon), and no Wonder Girls. So it’s not surprising to see boy bands dominate, especially with top groups like TVXQ and Big Bang coming back after long absences. Realistically speaking, girl groups will probably never outsell boy bands, but SNSD is the only group with a real shot as they have proven they can match/exceed boy band album sales. The exact figures of the SNSD vs Super Junior albums sales in 2010 are still up for debate, any ELF will tell you they outsold SNSD, and any SONE will tell you vise versa (the numbers were really really close). But SNSD was the first group to sell over 300k albums (if you add Oh!, RDR, and Hoot together) in one year since TVXQ did it back in 2008, that’s a phenomenal achievement for any band, male or female.

        • JustaTip's avatar JustaTip said:

Will we ever again see an album sell over 500k like Mirotic did in 3 months (barring a TVXQ reunion, of course)? So maybe 300k from one artist in one year domestically will be as good as it’s going to get for awhile (as Lady Igraine reminded us, Hoot sold an additional 150k in Japan)

Since Gee, we’ve been used to seeing the girls perform last on music shows. But looking over the guest list for Music Bank in Tokyo, it’s clear that TVXQ will perform last. The KBS special website for the event has TVXQ listed first, then Kara, then SNSD, and 2PM, etc. So it will be interesting to see who will perform *next* to last: Play to the KBS audience and have it be SNSD, or play to the Tokyo Dome audience and have it be Kara, or maybe even hot newcomers 2PM?

        • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

I think 500k is still possible, SNSD is still growing and gaining more fans, and as the fanbase solidifies even more in Korea, I believe more people will be willing to buy their physical albums. I wouldn’t be surprised if SNSD does do it in two or three years, TVXQ didn’t sell 500k Mirotic albums until 2 years after debuting in Japan, if SNSD can follow their footsteps, it’s definitely doable because I don’t think SNSD has totally peaked yet. If you think about it, even 300k is a crazy number, Korea only has approximately 1/6 of the population of the US, selling 300k there is like selling 1.8M units in the US which close to double platinum! Plus you already know Korea is worse than probably any developed country (except China) when it comes to illegal music downloads, which makes that figure even more amazing.

I like to draw a lot of parallels between SNSD and TVXQ not only because they are my favorite bands but because TVXQ in so many ways can serve as a template for SNSD’s development roadmap. For the special Music Bank in Japan, expect TVXQ to go last, and SNSD probably next to last, I wouldn’t be surprised if KARA goes next to last either. But 2PM are still too new, they also have no new Korean material just like SNSD and KARA.

    @RagingXL
I think what really sets SNSD apart from the other girl groups in Korea is the samchon fan. I don’t think the samchon fan is used to buying idol music, so when they do take interest in SNSD, they really are the deciding factor in terms of huge album sales. (Much like how 3rd party candidates in the U.S. proclaim they will win the election by appealing to the majority of voters who don’t vote, thus winning with an avalanche of *new* voters.)

As SNSD moves away from the cutesy image, its probably less embarrassing to purchase their music without looking like a pedophile. The samchon fan has money to spend, is probably used to purchasing CDs and not downloading. And he may bring his family to the concert as SM announced family packages for the July concerts. Moreover, it is a demographically desirable target market for advertisers (how else to explain corporate endorsements like Intel). Refer to the Stephi’s Dad series of articles on Soshified about the samchon fan (who claims he is successful and not a loser) who got Tiffany to sign his iPad. So, yeah… SNSD probably hasn’t peaked.

I know you like to draw parallels between the girls and TVXQ… which may make some of us nervous. But I think that precisely because of what happened to TVXQ/JYJ that SM won’t allow that sort of thing to ever get to that point again.

    • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

LOL I like how you said their mature image makes it less embarrassing to buy their albums, it’s totally true, and I’m not a samchon or a pedophile. But I like their cute image and mature image, honestly I think I might start to miss their cutesy image if they don’t go back to it anymore. As for the possibility of SNSD reaching the breaking point like TVXQ/JYJ split, I wrote an article on why it won’t happen, and it has more to do with the girls themselves than SM. But SM sure learned their lesson too.

    • PeachBlossum's avatar PeachBlossum said:

i don’t think that’s true and i’m not just saying that as an excuse. its no secret that SNSD has samchon fans, but this applies for ALL girl groups as well! SNSD is the most obvious because they are the top girl group so its more easier to spot the flaw. but from what i know, those who are in their fanclub in korea; majority of them are in their 20s and 30s…not exactly 40-50 year old men, maybe but they would probably only make-up 5% of the demographics. and i doubt all them actually buy their singles/albums/minialbums even those that are in the official fancafe. and you’re forgetting that SNSD also has a large INTERNATIONAL fandom, and majority of us DO buy their releases, concert goodies, and other SoShi merchandise. i think just singling out SNSD for their “samchon” fans is kind of an understatement and it shouldn’t be the case because “samchon” fans exists for any girl fandom but they don’t necessarily make up the consensus.

      • JustaTip's avatar JustaTip said:

Oh, LOL… I was counting the dudes in their 30s as samchons. You know, someone who is responsible for himself and maybe even other people too, more established in a career, probably married, or should be anyway. Not the younger fans who are still dependent on others, in school/college or camping out at the gaming cafes.

That kind of reminds me when Sunny was confronted with the question about why SNSD are called So Nyuhs (girls), when they are passed that age. Sunny replied that the textbook definition of So Nyuh can be used for any woman who has not married yet. (I think she said this on Sang Sang Plus, the one with Shinee). But I understand your point. Clearly, most SNSD fans are probably more like that University crowd that drowned out the girls with their fanchants last week.

So if I buy a CD from YesAsia, does it get counted as if I purchased it personally in Korea? Can this impact, say a Music Bank K-chart? Do foreign CD sales count towards year-end awards? Are there seperate line items for licensed foreign sales (like Taiwan, Philippines, etc.) vs.the way we Americans may buy it as an import?

        • PeachBlossum's avatar PeachBlossum said:

YesAsia’s CD counts towards the Oricon chart…BUT, make sure to buy the “japanese edition” and not the “korean edition” of SNSD’s releases. for example, if you want to buy “Mr. Taxi” but the edition you wanted no longer is available but they offer you a limited edition but its under the “korean edition” this won’t count on the Oricon. YesAsia CDs will only apply in the Oricon if you buy the editions that is exclusively release in japan. It would be easy to spot it cause the website will highlight this to lessen the confusion. Hopefully you get what I’m saying, lol! but yeah, if you wanna buy any of SNSD’s japanese releases you will have to make sure its labeled “japanese edition” and not the “korean” one.

        • RagingXL's avatar RagingXL said:

          PeachBlossom:

I think SNSD does have a higher percentage of samchon fans, and by that I mean fans in their 30s or up. If you watch SNSD on Park Junghoon’s Deep Talk, they interviewed a couple of “samchons” who are in their mid-30s, I think Yuri once said if they’re more than 12 years older than SNSD’s age, then they’re a samchon fan. There is a substantial number of these samchon fans, definitely more than 5%, and SNSD has more of these fans compare to other girl groups. Think about it, these people are busy individuals with more things to worry about than your regular teen/tween fan, if they only have time to follow one girl group, they’ll probably just stick with following the best, which is SNSD. But you are right in that they’re probably not a big factor in SNSD’s album sales, the majority of their fanbase which are young fans will still contribute the most to album sales. When we talk about album sales, we’re talking within Korea, which unfortunately does not account for most of the sales internationally, so the international fandom plays a limited role in helping SNSD get to that milestone 500k sales or more.

          JustaTip:
From what I know there’s three major album sales charts in Korea: Hanteo. GAON and MIAK, they each account for album sales slightly differently, I don’t know the details. I think the Hanteo is the benchmark used by the Golden Disk Awards to decide winners. I believe YesAsia’s sales will count on GAON, but not Hanteo, not sure about MIAK. DVDHeaven’s sales will count on Hanteo and MIAK, and a small boutique like SoshiGoods will count on Hanteo. If you buy from GrapeMusic on eBay, I’m not sure if that counts on charts. If anyone has more info on which store’s sales count towards which charts, please enlighten us. As how K-Chart counts physical album sales, I’m not sure where they source their data either. These days the K-Chart gives way more weight to the digital charts anyway, I’m not sure if physical sales even means much anymore. We’re at a day and age when a small-time group like Secret can beat TVXQ on the K-Chart even when TVXQ sells over 250k physical albums, the digital chart is the main deciding factor now. If you want to help improve SNSD’s chances on the K-Chart, buying a physical album is no longer enough, you must also help them win digital points by streaming their songs on various music portals. Every band now yearns for the “All-Kill” on digital charts, physical album sales is no longer the #1 priority. By the way, I don’t think foreign licensed album sales will count towards sales in Korea.

So I went on one of those sights where they have color coded lyrics and in the comment there were full blown arguments about sooyoung being a main vocalist but i was kind of loling because shes not one but it kinda makes you wonder right? snsd has its 2 mains which r taeyeon and sica, then you have three other leads. but usually, when i look at parts given in songs i consider sooyoung and yuri to be vocalist and hyoyeon and yoona as subs. moving on during the Japanese promotions I noticed that Yuri and Sooyoung switched postions kind of. Like in korea yuri was number 6 underneath the top 5, now its sooyoung as number 6 under the top 5. though, yep i happy for her. in japan sooyoung truly got to shine. am i the only one who thinks this way?

The beauty of Yoona is really luxurious, elegant, intelligent, and charming. Her eyes is very beautiful, and pearl-bright.
When i behold the face of Yoona, the wonderful and miraculous beauty of Yoona makes me very cheerful, inspired, relaxed, romantic and feel the world beautiful.
Yoona is the most beautiful girl, i have ever seen in the world.
Thank the god for creating a really beautiful Yoona for the world.

    • jjbaxter's avatar jjbaxter said:

That was an interesting piece by the BBC. Its always been a nagging concern of mine. Most of the girls have accumulated a large “debt” for all their years in training that needs to be repaid. I just hope their enourmous success wipes that debt clean quickly and they get to enjoy the rewards for their hard work.
Makes me wonder how other groups, who dont achieve the same success but also spend years in training repay their commitment.
Do any readers have some insight on the financial side of the process?

      Cool.
It’s interesting to listen to different renditions of our favourite songs, no matter how much they were altered.
But, doesn’t that sound slightly like the concert version of “Genie”? I’ve noticed it with the Japanese showcase(s) concerts last year.

      • hyobaby's avatar hyobaby said:

it sounds the same to me as well. i’ve never noticed anything on the music shows so they only do this for concerts. there really isnt a difference for me except hyo’s solo and i just wanna wish. the beat seemed to change a lil and the choreography a lil. but i like this video because sica was going hard. i wonder if she misses dancing.

To Kenneth (and the rest of the SK Staff),

I know i’ve been a bit harsh with my opinions of late but i honestly feel there’s been some slights towards Sunny (and in turn the Sunshiners here) going back to her birthday (ex. Sunny not getting a dedicated banner on the home page for her birthday, and the giant overshadowing Tiffany post which appeared on the same day for no reason). In all honesty i really hate bringing up anything even remotely negative but as a fiercely passionate (ok, borderline obsessive) Sunshiner, i sincerely find these events disheartening and upsetting. Also, knowing for sure now that i’m in the minority here, i almost feel as if i “must” speak up just to help maintain any chance of fair representation for Sunny. Put yourself in my place for a minute…wouldn’t you have similar feelings if you were observing these things happening to Tiffany on your favorite “SNSD” Fansite? And although Sunny is obviously my bias, i have nothing but positive feelings towards every member of SNSD and would feel bad if any of them were treated unfairly. Now, i don’t expect anyone to give a damn about my feelings alone, but if sincere feedback from a loyal fan of this site (loyal as in i visit daily and don’t take time to post comments on any other sites of any sort, seriously) is in any way of interest to you, then i truly have to say that lately the experience in coming here has been notably less pleasant than in the past. I do acknowledge that corrective efforts have been made once certain things were called out but i’d much Much rather not have to go there in the first place. I know there are no perfect situations and you can’t please everyone all the time but hopefully the fans here of All Nine members can be considered whenever possible. I believe this is what our 9 Angels would want as well. Maybe not a realistic wish, i understand…but a wish nonetheless.

Anyway, i want to make clear that i keep coming back and supporting SK because i strongly feel on a whole, this is by far the best site for all things SNSD…because of the fine efforts of the staff and the wonderful contributions (comments and otherwise) of the majority of regulars here. And lastly on a personal note, i have absolutely no ill will towards you, Kenneth. I had wished you well from the beginning and still feel that you are a good addition to the SK staff. Thank you to all for considering what i had to say here. I will try to be more pleasant myself going forward.

      @ SunnyBunnySoFunny
Thank you very much for your insightful comments on the matter at hand. They are very much appreciated.
Firstly, my sincere apologies for getting you and all the other Sunshiners who visit this site all upset. My 1st Tiffany post on SK was not meant as a slight on Sunny at all; I just happened to overlook the fact that the post appeared on her birthday ( I was still new with WordPress blogging then, and still am 😉 !) and I did try to make it up to her by doing a Sunny Birthday post on the same day itself.
As for the so-called “tiny” photo used for the smile poll, I personally thought she looked real cute in that one, and that is why I used it. No slight to Sunny, personally, or her fans was intended. As you may have noticed if you visit the smile poll thread again, I have replaced the posted photo with a bigger (and equally cute !) photo of Sunny.
Personally, I support All 9 ladies equally in my fandom as a SONE and SK staff member. I think Sunny has a Beautiful and Cute countenance, with an eye-smile that equals Tiffany’s at times, and an aegyo that Nobody can equal 🙂 !
In fact, All 9, when they smile, can affect me equally in a Very Good Way, and sometimes it is difficult to choose a definite favourite among the 9 ladies. My bias is Tiffany, it is true, but I will highlight All news regarding the 9 equally (as I am sure, so will the rest of the SK staffers) since a Real SONE supports All the 9 angels equally.
The problem arises when we use our personal tastes and opinions to select a photo image to illustrate the post. Sometimes what I find, oh so appropriate, for illustrative purposes may not “sit-right” with the particular fan-supporter(s) of that SNSD member. For this, we humbly ask for your understanding. Do know always that our primary purpose here is to celebrate the triumphs of Soshi and not run any of the ladies down, figuratively speaking.
Finally, I’m really glad you are a loyal supporter of this blog-site :D. Cheers !

      Thanks for the message,

I’m going to be straight up and as brutally honest as I can, though I am not Kenneth I hope he chimes in to answer your concerns directly.

In the event of Kenneth posting the Tiffany post when Sunny’s birthday was on the same day, please trust me when I say it was a terrible coincidence. That post was an article prepared long ago by Kenneth and as a celebration of his admittance into SK he posted the article, though it can be said he DID apologize for posting it while it was Sunny’s birthday, I’m pretty sure he did not really think it would lead to hurt Sunny fans. Right or wrong, it’s already happened, and I hope you can look past it.

I want to apologize if you (and any other fan of a particular member) feel that not enough things are covered by our staff on a particular member, we are, to the core, a news blog, and some members have more frequent news than others and in the little spare time that the staff have to create original posts, we find it much more enjoyable to create posts for our bias, again, I maintain that we try to truly stay as unbiased as possible (outside of spazzing and original comments and posts). Please believe me that I believe that you shouldn’t feel like you are in the minority, just on a different side of the fence that could happen to anyone.

As a Staff of SK (I’d want to say Senior but there are others that have been here longer than me, so we’ll stick with Staffer) I personally apologize, and to make it up to you (though it was already part of my scheduling plan to do this) you can expect an original Sunny post from me not long before Tiffany’s birthday comes up (which I will be doing too), I hope you can take this as an indication that I truly feel bad for how you feel and I want to fix it.

      Dreadtech

    • Hello SunnyBunnySoFunny ,

Thanks for the feedback! We really appreciate comments like these, as they provide us with a better insight of what’s good or bad about the blog and how the community feels. I think Dread and Kenneth did a good job in explaining what happened with regards to that particular situation, but I’ll comment as well.

I more or less agree with Dread’s notion in that it was an unfortunate situation due to a variety of things, but it’s already happened and we’ll just move forward. Yes, we can put up a Sunny banner right now to try to pay for our sins, but that wouldn’t be very appropriate haha. I’ll be straight forward and say that Sunny’s birthday was.. horribly executed. It was a point in time where all the ‘active’ staff (that aren’t on hiatus) were busy with whatever else they had going on in their lives. You also may have remembered that the post came out a bit later in the day, because it was actually written that morning. Banner? Yeah, we totally forgot about that too. No excuses. We love Sunny, but things were just horribly timed while we were/are underhanded.

About the Tiffany post appearing on that day – it really shouldn’t have, and that was something overlooked by both Kenneth and myself. The article was written by Kenneth as one of his submissions to join the team, and I had suggested he could make his first post using one of those pieces. Coincidentally, Kenneth just happened to join on.. you guessed it, Sunny’s birthday! Hence, a Tiffany-praising article was released. I sincerely apologize that it happened in such a way, and how poorly Sunny’s birthday end up being on SNSD Korean. We hope it wasn’t too traumatic of an experience for sunshiners, and we’re doing what we can with what we have to keep up with soshi on a regular basis.

PS – SunnyBunnySoFunny – you should apply. 😉

        To Kenneth, Dreadtech, & Greeentee,
Thank you all very much for your sincere replies. To be sure, i hold no grudges towards any of you or SK. You’re right…what happened is in the past, and i just wanted to express how i felt at the time and be done with it. Thank you all for simply hearing me out, thats all i hoped to get out of this. Please don’t feel the need to take any further action on this as “payback” or “revenge” was never my objective (that would just be wrong). No one here owe’s me anything. In fact, i want to apologize if i had wrongly suggested that there was any intentional anti-biases. In my heart of hearts i do not believe there were ever any negative intentions from any one at SK. I do believe you are all kind hearted people who only want the best for all Nine Soshi members. I should never again sound as if i don’t appreciate the efforts put forth by the SK Staff. Thanks to All of you for the great work you do!

ps- hyobaby, thanks for the kind suggestion.

@sunnybunnysofunny there is nothing wrong with getting you fix somewhere else once in a while. usually other sites that are dedicated to one member are faster in updating you on that member than any other site dedicated to snsd. I do prefer this site but the are other sites out there that post more than this. No offense to the SK staff, but sometimes, if you want more on you biases, you’re just gonna have to google elsewhere.

Well today I was on YouTube looking for videos of the girls and I came across two short clips of the girls in LA for the SMtown concert. (Tiffany taking a head count and the other one was Tiffany and YoonA playing around) now these were not fan cams they had narration and if felt like it was a “Right Now it’s Girls’ Generation” ep. but it wasn’t because they only made 4 eps. Now in the comments they all say it’s a show but I can not find it any where!!! Do you know what happened to this show or if there is a way I can find it?
